Darby Dyar, Astronomy Approved By: Christopher Condit, Geology CE Type: Departmental Honors Project Using a gridded version of maritan topography with the computer program Gridview, this project studied the depth-diameter relationship of martian impact craters. The work encompasses 361 profiles of impacts with diameters larger than 15 kilometers and is a continuation of work that was started at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Walter S. Keifer. Using the most ‘pristine,’ or deepest craters in the data a depth-diameter relationship was determined: d = 0.610D 0.327 , where d is the depth of the crater and D is the diameter of the crater, both in kilometers. This relationship can then be used to estimate the theoretical depth of any impact radius, and therefore can be used to estimate the pristine shape of the crater. With a depth-diameter ratio for a particular crater, the measured depth can then be compared to this theoretical value and an estimate of the amount of material within the crater, or fill, can then be calculated. The data includes 140 named impact craters, 3 basins, and 218 other impacts. The named data encompasses all named impact structures of greater than 100 kilometers in diameter. -

Abstract: The hybrid polarimetric architecture of Mini-SAR and Mini-RF onboard Indian Chan- drayaan-1 and LRO missions were the first to acquire shadowed polar images of the Lunar surface. This study aimed to characterize the surface properties of Lunar polar and non-polar regions con- taining Haworth, Nobile, Gioja, an unnamed crater, Arago, and Moltke craters and delineate the crater boundaries using a newly emerged approach. The Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC) data of Chandrayaan-1 was found useful for the detection and extraction of precise boundaries of the cra- ters using the ArcGIS Crater tool. The Stokes child parameters estimated from radar backscatter like the degree of polarization (m), the relative phase (δ), Poincare ellipticity (χ) along with the Circular Polarization Ratio (CPR), and decomposition techniques, were used to study the surface attributes of craters. The Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues used to measure entropy and mean alpha showed distinct types of scattering, thus its comparison with m-δ, m-χ gave a profound conclusion to the lunar surface. The dominance of surface scattering confirmed the roughness of rugged material. The results showed the CPR associated with the presence of water ice as well as a dihedral reflection inside the polar craters. -

FOREWORD The Cascade Range has had an important influence on the lives of a great many people ever since man has inhabited the Northwest. The mountains were a barrier to Indian travel; they were a challenge to the westward migration of the early settlers in the area; they posed serious problems for the early railroad builders; and they still constitute an obstruction to east-west travel. A large part of the timber, mineral, and surface water resources of the State come from the Cascades. About 80 percent of the area covered by glaciers in the United States, exclusive of Alaska, is in the Cascades of Washington. This region includes some of the finest mountain scenery in the country and is a popular outdoor recreation area. The Cascade Range is a source of economic value to many, a source of pleasure to many others, and a problem or source of irritation to some. Soltis§ Introduction Phylogeography is concerned with the principles and processes that determine the geographic distributions of genealogical lineages, within and among closely related species (Avise et al. 1987;Avise 2000).Although this field of study is very new (only a little more than a decade has passed since the term ‘phylogeography’was first coined; see Avise et al. 1987),the scientific literature in this research area is now voluminous. To date, most phylogeographic investigations of natural populations have focused on muticellular animals (Hewitt 1993; Patton et al. 1994; daSilva & Patton 1998; Eizirik et al. 1998;Avise 2000; Hewitt 2000; Schaal & Olsen 2000; Sullivan et al. 2000). This bias is due in large part to the ready availability of population-level genetic markers afforded by the animal mitochondrial genome. The more slowly evolving chloroplast genome,in contrast,often does not provide sufficient variation to reconstruct phylogeny at the populational level (Soltis et al. 1997; Schaal et al. 1998; Schaal & Olsen 2000). Phylogeographic data have accumulated so rapidly for animal taxa that it has been possible to compare phylogeographic structure among codistributed species. In fact, one of the most profound recent contributions of molecular phylogeography is the construction of regional phylogeographic perspec- tives that permit comparisons of phylogeographic structure among codistributed species, and subsequent integration of genealogical data with independent biogeo- graphic and systematic data. Probably the best-known regional phylogeographic analysis for North America involves animals from the southeastern USA (reviewed in Avise 2000). -

Schmitt, Chair Baddeleyite is a frequently found accessory mineral in silica-undersaturated lavas. Because it is typically enriched in uranium, while having low initial lead, baddeleyite has long been a prime target for U-Pb geochronology for mafic rocks. The difficulties in retrieving small baddeleyite grains from volcanic samples and the lack of a detailed understanding of baddeleyite occurrence, however, have limited baddeleyite chronology largely to coarse-grained mafic intrusive rocks. In this thesis, the development of U-Th in-situ baddeleyite analysis using Secondary Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is presented together with an assessment of baddeleyite occurrence in Quaternary silica- undersaturated lavas. Samples studied include the Cathedral Crag and Burroughs Mountain lava flows of Cascade arc volcanoes Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier (Washington, USA), respectively, and Accademia, Punta Marmolite and Cuma lava domes of the Campi Flegrei caldera (Naples, Italy). Baddeleyite crystals were initially identified in cut and polished rock billets using scanning electron microscope (SEM) backscatter imaging and energy dispersive x-ray analysis, before they were separated by diamond-drilling for ii SIMS analysis. A total of 62 and 52 baddeleyite crystals were documented from Cathedral and Burroughs Mountain lava flows; 205, 42 and 15 baddeleyite crystals were documented from Accademia, Punta Marmolite and Cuma lava domes, respectively. -

Title: Composition, Distribution and Succession of Subal ne Meadows in Mount Rainier National Park Abstract approved: --' Dr. W. W. Chilcote In 1970 a phytoscxiological reconnaissance consisting of 135 plots in the Subalpine Meadow Zone was made. These samples were sorted using an association table and several Alpine Zone and very early seral communities were set aside, An additional hundred plots taken by M. 3. Hamann were incorporated with these and compiled in another association table and com- bined in a two-dimensional ordination.This analysis yielded 18 major and 16 minor described community types which were clustered into five vegetation types. A key to the vegetation and community types is also presented. Soil moisture and temperature data were taken during 1971 and 1972 and are used to help characterize selected important communities. Soil moistures did not drop much during either season, although differences between corn- munities are apparent. The difference in temperatures (of the top 2 cm of soil) of the same selected communities were more striking. The Festuca domi- nated communities experienced soil temperatures over350C, while maximum temperatures in other communities rarely ranged over 20 C Low mght- time temperatures were relatively similar from conimumty to commumty, ranging from near freezing to about + 5° C. Several successional patterns were uncovered. In general the com- munities in the Low-Herbaceous Vegetation Type are early seral and are replaced by members of the Wet-Sedge, Lush-Herbaceous and the Dry-Grass Vegetation Types.
