Report on the Grand Assembly of the Grand Lodge of Spain, held in Barcelona

on 11 March 2017. a a Rt. W. Bro. Gerald William Hales PGInsp., PGOrg.

The Grand Lodge of Spain holds its annual Grand Assembly in March of each year, usually in Barcelona or Madrid. It is at this meeting that appointments are made and roles are changed, as well as it being a major ceremonial occasion. a a This year, 2017, it was also the occasion of a correction to what was regarded as something of an anomaly. In the list of rankings, the position of Grand Secretary was placed considerably lower on the list than the importance of his work seemed to warrant. The Grand Master therefore changed this, so the position of the new Grand Secretary, V. W. Bro. José Masó Portabella, is now next to the Grand Treasurer. a a The previous Grand Secretary was promoted to Grand Inspector. There are six Grand Inspectors, each with a specic responsibility. These are Ritual, Education and Training, Relations with other , The Grand Master Communication, Institutional Relations & Publication. M.W. Bro. 300th Anniversary of Freemasonry Exhibition written by R. W. Bro. Duncan R. Mitchell - Provincial Grand Master Province of Murcia

As part of the celebrations to mark the three hundredth anniversary of Freemasonry the lodge members of Lodge Moria 136 planned to hold an exhibition in the city of Murcia. The venue that was chosen was the magnicent nineteenth century Casino, a building very close to the cathedral. a

Construction of the Casino commenced in 1847 and is a mixture of the distinct artistic styles that co-existed in the last quarter of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. a

The Casino’s façade and entrance hide the splendours within, passing through the main entrance on Calle Traperia, a baroque vestibule leads to the Arabic patio with spectacular statues, polished marble staircases, blue and gold carved wall frescos and lavishly decorated ceilings. The Casino was granted royal approval by King Juan Carlos 1 in 2008 and is now known as El Real Casino de Murcia. a

The planned events started on the Friday evening of the tenth of May with a conference and presentation of the principles of Masonry. This was chaired by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Oscar de Alfonso Ortega assisted by the Worshipful Master of Lodge Moria, The Director of the Casino and Worshipful Brother Luis Alcaina. The Grand Master drew the attention of the audience to the similarities between the principles of Masonry and those of the original members of the Casino. Many masons and non masons alike admired the displays of Masonic aprons from different countries and differing time periods. One highlight - a superb and unique collection of ve antique aprons took everyone's attention and provoked discussions on their design and origin. a

Displays of Masonic memorabilia and embroidered Collars and aprons completed the exhibition. a

The exhibition which was visited by over 4,000 people, the vast majority of whom were non mason has helped bring Masonry to the knowledge of many and has dispelled suspicion and mistrust of masonry which has been common for several decades. a

During the month of the exhibition there were several other events with presentation of lms on Masonry and two debates. a

The entire event was a huge success, Lodge Maria and those who provided material for the temple and exhibition should be congratulated for all their dedication and hard work.

FREEMASONS OF SANTA FAZ LODGE Nº 48 MAKE A FURTHER DONATION TO ASPANION. A W. Bro. William Turney Press Officer Province of Valencia

On Saturday, 25th March 2017 a Strawberry Fayre was held at The International Club in and the Lodge Committee gave a lot of their time freely and voluntarily in full support of this needy cause. a

The idea was that everything for the Fayre had to be based on the theme of strawberries and those who contributed showed a great deal of initiative in the wide range of goodies they prepared, from strawberry pavlova, strawberry cakes, strawberry tarts, strawberry jam to strawberry and meringue skewers for the chocolate fountain. a

At the end of a well attended Fayre a few remaining items were auctioned and a grand total of 172 euros was raised - this is in addition to more than 2000 euros which had already been donated. This was again donated by the Santa Faz Nº 48 towards their Charity appeal for this year, which is ASPANION - a sadly much needed Charity for Children with Cancer at General Hospital. a

Our thanks go to everyone who made something for the Fayre and to those who gave their generous support.

This event was a rst for any of the local Lodges to undertake. It was held at ‘The Club’, Calle Toledo, Ciudad Quesada, on Wednesday 31st May. a

Brethren and guests started to arrive from around 1:30pm for a 2:00pm start. The Charity Steward then hastily organised twelve teams of four. After a little confusion those who had played, plus two members of the bowls club, soon had things under control. a

The afternoon progressed well with winning teams moving to the right. This had the effect of all teams playing each other during the afternoon. The soft shoes and woods (bowls to the uninitiated) were provided by the Club, although some participants had their own. a

Bowling nished at 4pm, when a cream tea and sandwiches was served at a seated venue. A raffle was held which raised three hundred and fty euros to which was added a further donation which raised this to three hundred and seventy euros. a

More than sixty-ve Masons, wives and guests arrived promptly at seven o'clock for what turned out to be a very enjoyable evening. Entertainment was provided by no fewer than three different singer/musicians. a a First up was Frank Abrams a great saxophonist and singer. He also put in a lot of effort to get people enjoying themselves and getting them on to the dance oor. a a Second up was 'Grey Jam' (better known to some of us as W.Bro Graham Scutt) who entertained us royally on the electric guitar. LOCAL FREEMASONS PRESENT A CLASSICAL CONCERT IN GATA. A W. Bro. William Turney Press Officer Province of Valencia

On Saturday, 24th June, the gardens of W.Bro. Darrell Clayton and his lovely wife Sally, in , were again thrown open to hold another stunning Classical Concert in Gata celebration. This is now an annual event, organised by local Freemasons, which is modelled after the grand Glyndebourne event in England although on a slightly smaller scale. Not withstanding, this classical concert was incredible and everyone there enjoyed it enormously. a

The idea is generally of a black tie, classical music event to be held in Darrell and Sally's magnicent gardens. More than one hundred and thirty Masons, wives and guests attended and enjoyed a great evening with exceptionally good weather. Everyone brings their own food to create one gigantic picnic. The tables are decorated and the best of which wins a prize. This year an element of fancy dress crept in with some tables and guests dressed as Hawaiians while others were dressed as ancient Romans. A great time was had by all! a

The entertainment this year was even more varied than last. Starting at 7pm and continuing until 11pm, this was a non stop feast of talented local entertainers. They comprised a tribute group, El Divo, a ladies choir, some dancing youngsters, the local tenor, Manuel Lazaro and also local mezzo-soprano Gill Henry. At the end Gill and Manuel united as duo 'Cantabile' and received a standing ovation. The level of talent for an event of this size was truly amazing and could have graced any stage in Europe. All of the performers enjoyed rapturous applause and most guests are already looking forward to next year. a

A grand charity raffle was held which raised the incredible sum of one thousand eight hundred euros. This will be donated to local charities later in the year. A huge round of thanks to Darrell and Sally, and their trusty helpers, not only for allowing the use of their garden but also for the weeks of hard work they have put in to make this a huge success. a

Final total of monies raised - €2,074!!

On Friday 16th June 2017 a presentation was made by the Masonic Homes of Valencia Association, to the main hospital in Denia. The presentation was for a cheque to pay for a second CT scanner which has been sorely needed by the hospital for some time. a

Currently when the older machine is in use, in need of repair or being serviced, patients often need to travel long distances for diagnosis before treatment can begin. This is obviously not good and creates further stress and hardship at a time when such problems are least needed. a

Denia Hospital itself raised the magnicent sum of one hundred thousand euros towards the cost of this MHVA Board Members with the large cheque machine, but such machines do not come cheap. Yet another one hundred thousand euros were needed to make a purchase possible. This is where the MHV Association stepped in and donated the much needed money. a

The scanner is now on order from the United States and should arrive, ready for use in early August. More than fty people turned up for the presentation including representatives of the hospital, members of the Board of the Masonic Homes, volunteers who run the charity shop and many hospital workers. a

It was a great afternoon and an excellent buffet lunch was laid on for all the visitors. Together with some of the shop volunteers
