  • The Interface Between Buddhism and International Humanitarian Law (Ihl)
REDUCING SUFFERING DURING CONFLICT: THE INTERFACE BETWEEN BUDDHISM AND INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW (IHL) Exploratory position paper as background for 4th to 6th September 2019 conference in Dambulla, Sri Lanka Peter Harvey (University of Sunderland, Emeritus), with: Kate Crosby (King’s College, London), Mahinda Deegalle (Bath Spa University), Elizabeth Harris (University of Birmingham), Sunil Kariyakarawana (Buddhist Chaplain to Her Majesty’s Armed Forces), Pyi Kyaw (King’s College, London), P.D. Premasiri (University of Peradeniya, Emeritus), Asanga Tilakaratne (University of Colombo, Emeritus), Stefania Travagnin (University of Groningen). Andrew Bartles-Smith (International Committee of the Red Cross). Though he should conquer a thousand men in the battlefield, yet he, indeed, is the nobler victor who should conquer himself. Dhammapada v.103 AIMS AND RATIONALE OF THE CONFERENCE This conference, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with a number of universities and organizations, will explore correspondences between Buddhism and IHL and encourage a constructive dialogue and exchange between the two domains. The conference will act as a springboard to understanding how Buddhism can contribute to regulating armed conflict, and what it offers in terms of guidance on the conduct of, and behavior during, war for Buddhist monks and lay persons – the latter including government and military personnel, non-State armed groups and civilians. The conference is concerned with the conduct of armed conflict, and not with the reasons and justifications for it, which fall outside the remit of IHL. In addition to exploring correspondences between IHL and Buddhist ethics, the conference will also explore how Buddhist combatants and communities understand IHL, and where it might align with Buddhist doctrines and practices: similarly, how their experience of armed conflict might be drawn upon to better promote IHL and Buddhist principles, thereby improving conduct of hostilities on the ground.

  • Art and Archaeology of East and Southeast Asia the LIBRARY OF
Art and Archaeology of East and Southeast Asia THE LIBRARY OF DR. JAN FONTEIN Former Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Partial catalogue April 2018 The Boston Globe June 28, 2017 Jan Fontein, historian of Asian art and former MFA director, dies at 89 Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Dr. Fontein helped install the "Money Tree" in the exhibition "Stories from China's Past" in July 1987. As a boy growing up in the Netherlands, Jan Fontein found his calling as a museum director and art historian when he chanced upon an exhibit of ancient artifacts that animated his imagination. “When I was 8 years old, I was taken to a museum in Holland which focused on Roman antiquities. I have a very vivid recollection of that moment,” he told the Globe in 1985. “I saw a dirty old case filled with flint arrowheads. That sounds dull. But I saw the arrowheads as direct messages to me. I envisioned a battle in all its mad glory.” The arrowheads “were not works of art,” he added. “They were simple, humble objects. But they were a way for me to communicate with the past. That was exciting.” While serving from 1975 to 1987 as director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Dr. Fontein shared his enthusiasm about art and ancient centuries with hundreds of thousands of visitors who poured into the blockbuster shows that the MFA staged. He also ushered the institution into the modern era of museums as cultural marketplaces, overseeing the fund-raising and creation of the I.M.

ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Historia Religionum 33 Buddhism among Tamils in Tamilakam and Īlam Part 3 Extension and Conclusions Editor-in Chief: Peter Schalk Co-Editors: Astrid van Nahl Uppsala 2013 ©The Authors ISSN 0439-2132 ISBN 978-91-554-8412-5 Distributed by Uppsala University Library Uppsala, Sweden Box 510, SE-751 20 Uppsala, Sweden www.uu.se [email protected] Cover: The picture on the front cover shows the statue of the Vallipurambuddha which is now in Wat Benja, Bangkok. Abstract Buddhism among Tamils in Tamilakam and Īlam. Part 3. Extension and Conclusions. Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis, Historia Religio- num 32. Editor-in-Chief: Peter Schalk. Co-editor: Astrid van Nahl. Uppsala: AUU, 2012. This book is the result of a conference in Bangkok in January 2012 mainly financed by Vetenskapsrådet in Stockholm (426-2011-1299). In Bangkok, not only pre-colonial Buddhism among Tamils was dis- cussed but also Buddhism during the colonial and post-colonial pe- riod, like the Buddhism of Pēriyar, of the Ambedkar movement in Yālppāṇam (Jaffna) in the 1950s, and the expansion of siṃhala budu samayam (Siṃhala Buddhism) into areas of Tamil speakers. The field of Buddhist Studies—in Europe and the Americas—has largely ignored the traditions, activities, and cultural products of Tamil-speaking Buddhists in southern India, former pre-colonial Tamilakam, present Tamilnāṭu, and Īlam (Sri Laṃkā). This confer- ence, building on previous work done by the applicant, sought to ex- pand the range of conversation from South Indian and Īlam special- ists to scholars of southern Asian “Buddhisms” in Southeast Asia.
