Tom Paxton has become avoice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, and community. He has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60's Greenwich Village scene, and continues to be a primary influence on today's "New Folk" performers. Paxton's songbooks, critically THE acclaimed children's books (available from HarperCollins), award-winning children's recordings, and acatalog of hundreds of songs (recorded by artists running the gamut from Willie Nelson to Placido Domingo), all serve to document his 40-year career. Paxton's place in folk music is secured not just by hit records and awards, but by the admiration of three Highwaymen generations of fellow musicians. An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, he has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. His generosity has taken the shape of abenefit concert performance for alittle girl fighting leukemia, or apersonal note of and m encouragement toanup-and-coming songwriter. This istheman who wrote andlives the words, "Peace will come, and let it begin with me." He is one of the great songwriters of the last century and will be reckoned as one of the greats in this new century as well. Inthefall folktriowhosereputationhadprecededthemfromasmallclubinAspencalled"TheLimelite". of1958, Dave Fisher,SteveButts,BobBurnett,andChanDanielsmetthrougha Today,TheLimelitersarestillthrillingaudienceswiththeirsurgingvocalsandironicwit.With performanceat a collegefraternityshow,andguitaristSteveTrottcameaboard during differentconfigurationsovertheyears,thegrouphaspreservedtheirsignaturevocalsound theirrehearsals. OriginallynamedTheClansmen,fortheirheavilyScottishandIrish andcontinuestoearntheirnameas"TheFabulousLimeliters."Forthreeyears,The repertory,theywerepopularenough at concerts around Wesleyanthattheydecided LimeliterswerethemusicalrepresentativesforCoca-Cola.Theirrenditionofthejingle,"Things totryandturn professional,andtogeta recordingcontract. Thegroupcuta demo GoBetterwithCoke"becameanationalhit.Timemagazinesummeduptheirappealwiththe tapeoftheirentire repertoryand,as anafterthought,includeda songthatthey'dlately memorablequote:"Ifthebutton-down,scrubbed-lookingKingstonTrioaretheundergraduates addedtotheir shows, called"Michael,RowTheBoatAshore." Theysigned with ofbig-timeU.S.folk-singing,TheLimelitersarethefaculty."Andnow,after45years,the UnitedArtistsand"Michael,RowTheBoatAshore"slowlybecame popularacrossthe Limelitersarestillaliveandwell.Astheysailthroughthenewmillenium,theiruniqueblendof northeast andbrokeoutnationallyin1961, risingtothe No.1spotthatsummer. The thrillingharmony,whacked-outhumorandcontemporarysatireconsistentlydrawsstanding Highwaymensuddenlyfoundthemselves majorrecordingstarsas theirsenior year ovationsfromaudiencesthat,today,spanthreegenerations.Withtheirenergyandenthusiasm commenced.UnitedArtistswaseagertogetthembackintothestudio. Anewalbum, undiminished,TheLimelitersremainthemostexcitingfolkactthatthegenrehaseverproduced. entitledStandingRoomOnlyfollowed,alongwithappearances ontheEdSullivan AlthoughoriginalLimeliterAlexHassilevhasrecentlyretired,thesuperblytalentedmembersof Showanda fullschedule ofweekend concerts. Thegroup's singles"TheGypsy thecurrentgroup-MackBailey,AndyCorwin,andGaylonTaylor- carryoninthespirited Rover"and"Cottonfields"becameimmediatesuccesses. Aftergraduation,the traditionof"TheFabulousLimeliters"tothedelightedapplauseofaudienceseverywhere. Highwaymenbecame muchclosertothecoreoftheurbanfolkmusicrevival.Ifthey weren'ttoppingthecharts,theirrecordsstillsoldrespectably,includinga livealbum, HootenannyWithTheHighwaymenin1963,and OneMoreTimein1964.
