Its distinctly elongated, flattened head and small, rounded ears, make this unusual member of the cat family bear a strong resemblance to the civets, which are not cats, but members of the Viverridae family (4) (5). About the size of a domestic cat, the flat-headed cat has a long body, short legs and a short, thickly-furred tail (5). Even more than the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrina), the flat-headed cat appears remarkably adapted to a semi-aquatic, fish-eating lifestyle (6). Partial webbing between the toes help the animal to move through water, and the long, narrow jaws and pointed, backward-facing teeth aid the catching and holding of slippery prey such as fish and frogs. The thick, soft coat is reddish-brown on the top of the head and dark brown on the body, finely speckled with grey and buff on the tips (5). The belly is mottled white, spotted and splashed with brown, and the insides of the limbs are reddish-brown, fading towards the feet (2). -

Fishing cats have declined sharply across South-East Asia where, according to the Fishing Cat Working Group, there might be new populations still to be found but the species could also be approaching extinction. In 2015, the CBC recorded1 Fishing Cats at two sites with no previous records in south-west Cambodia: Peam Krosaop Wildlife Sanctuary (PKWS) and Ream National Park (RNP). We photo-captured two individuals at PKWS, one of the largest mangrove areas in South-East Asia. We were also informed of the killing of a Fishing Cat at PKWS soon after the study was completed in retaliation for raiding fishing nets. This project seeks to estimate population abundance and status in PKWS, assess threats and work with all the relevant stakeholders to develop conservation measures to protect this newly found Fishing Cat population. Provide sufficient background information so that anyone unfamiliar with the project can understand its overall goals and objectives. This section should summarize your achievements of project objectives, or, if this is a six month report, it should summarize your progress towards achieving your stated objectives. The Report Summary should be written as if for an external audience (donors, press, etc.) — in a non-technical style and not to exceed 1000 words. India is home to 15 species of cats, the highest number any country has (Nowell and Jackson 1996). Yet, apart from the four big cats the small ones do not feature in any major research or conservation planning. Until now, for the most part information on small cats in India, including the fishing cat, has been in the form of natural history notes on distribution and habits, ad-hoc records on sightings and behaviour or short studies on diet and habitat use. The distribution of the fishing cat in India was unclear and recent surveys for mammals in some potential fishing cat habitats had not yielded any positive result. Even more alarming were the negative results obtained from areas such as Bharatpur which had several reports of fishing cats until a few years ago. -

Ranchi University, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India Corresponding Author: [email protected] Abstract The name of river “Swarnrekha” is given after in the ancient period due to the occurrence of “gold streaks” in the river water or river sediments. The river originated from a “seepage cum underground well”, locally called “Ranichuan” at the Nagari village of the Ranchi district. It is the first river which originates from seepage well locally called “Chuan” basically a great seepage well having a catchment area. According to Hindu Mythology, it is said that this Ranichuan was carved by the lord Rama by his arrow while Sita, his wife, was feeling thirsty during the period of Ramayana. In this way, we say that the river is basically originated from the seepage water or ground water. It travels towards the south east of Ranchi to East Singhbhum to Sarikhela and finally confluence with Damodar River at cretina mouth of the river. Previously, it was very pure form of drinkable water and day by day its quality deteriorated due to the anthropogenic activities and ultimately whole stretches of the river turned into garbage field and most polluted water streams. So, now we can say the river turned from gold streak to garbage streak and not suitable for the human beings without treatment. Physical, Chemical and microbial properties of the river water from point of origin to the lower chutia is deterioted such as water is very clean at the site of origin and became gradually hazy and dirt as it crosses through the habitants or settlements. -

CHALLENGES IN EFFICIENT WATER MANAGEMENT IN DAMODAR RIVER VALLEY - ROLE OF DVC 1 2 Dipankar Chaudhuri ; Satyabrata Banerjee Abstract The Damodar River Valley has an extensive history of developmental and planning activities since 1863. DVC was formed in the year 1948 by the act of Parliament to carry out the responsibilities for monitoring and developing this large watershed in an integrated manner. It is well aware that all the projects, planned originally could not be implemented till date by the DVC and the participatory states. Again, silt depositions in the existing reservoirs and channels due to erosions at the upper valley have reduced their respective storage and flowing capacities remarkably. On the other hand, demand of water has been increased many folds within the valley due to growth of industries, population etc. With passing of time, socio- economic and political condition of the valley has also changed a lot. So, considering the different constraints, DVC is trying to manage all its statutory obligations with its limitations. Performances of the operations in the different fields of activities like flood moderation, irrigation, municipal and irrigation water supply, Hydropower etc. have been studied elaborately in this article. Lots of new commendable initiatives to restore the lost-capacities and to increase the storage facilities have also been discussed. A Master Plan of the ecofriendly sustainable developmental activities of the valley in the different projected scenarios has already been prepared by DVC which has also been described in brief. Some scopes have been identified to take up a few new small Hydro schemes at different locations in the upper valley. -

Members of the Cat Specialist Group are encouraged to submit a short description of interesting projects Fishing Cat Conservation and Research Project The Fishing Cat Research and Conservation Project identifies viable populations of fishing cats in Southeast Asia supports direct action to conserve those populations. The project does this by conducting field research, supporting effective habitat management, and by initiating and supporting education and outreach activities. Namfon Cutter is the director of this project and is currently conducting field research as part of a MSc. Degree program in the University of Minnesota’s Conservation Biology Graduate Program. KUMARA2,3 AND MEWA SINGH2,4 1Accepted November 2006 2 Biopsychology Laboratory, University of Mysore, Mysore 570 006, Karnataka, India. 3Email: [email protected] 4Email: [email protected] During a study from November 2001 to July 2004 on ecology and status of wild mammals in Karnataka, we sighted 143 animals belonging to 11 species of small carnivores of about 17 species that are expected to occur in the state of Karnataka. The sighted species included Leopard Cat, Rustyspotted Cat, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Asian Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet, Common Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose, Stripe-necked Mongoose and unidentified species of Otters. Malabar Civet, Fishing Cat, Brown Mongoose, Nilgiri Marten, and Ratel were not sighted during this study. The Western Ghats alone account for thirteen species of small carnivores of which six are endemic. The sighting of Rustyspotted Cat is the first report from Karnataka. Habitat loss and hunting are the major threats for the small carnivore survival in nature. The Small Indian Civet is exploited for commercial purpose. Hunting technique varies from guns to specially devised traps, and hunting of all the small carnivore species is common in the State. Activity-based design merges immersion displays with behavioural management to increase novelty and species-typical activities. Introduction to Animal Rotation How can we increase healthy animal activity and visitor interest while helping improve staff skills? Animal rotation displays can provide these benefits. I first introduced the concept of animal rotation displays in 1995 as one example of what my colleagues and I called Activity-Based Design and Management (Coe 1995, 1997). The central idea was to fully integrate the commonly disparate practices of husbandry, design, behavioural management and behavioural enrichment for the benefit of animals, staff and visitor alike. Readers interested in more background are referred to these papers. Since then a number of new animal rotation facilities have been built and operated and several more are being planned. It is time to devote a paper to the specific subject of animal rotation exhibits themselves. -
