Severn Beach resident Chris Rowen, who sadly collapsed on the sea wall when walking his dog last August, was obviously much better known and liked than I realised.

Earlier that year, I had been told by his next door neighbour, Mark Chattaway that Chris had a post box in his garden. I called on Chris and he welcomed me in and told me about how he had acquired it etc. He allowed me to take some photos, but apart from the odd “hello” I rarely saw him. I sent the photos to The Letter Box Study Group at the time. When I heard he had passed away, I mentioned it to them again, saying Chris had removed the cap, and had been using the box as a flower pot. I thought it was wooden at this point, and would likely be rotten and therefore not wanted. I said I hoped it didn’t end up in a skip.

A friend on the Isle of Wight, who has a postal museum, said he would be willing to take it on and keep it in memory of Chris, as he already had two other boxes in memoriam to people. I forwarded the respective e-mails, with the offer to Mark and his wife Bridget, who showed the executor, the offer made. This appealed to him, and after a little thought allowed me to collect the box and arrange to get it to Arthur Reeder, the museum owner. When I collected it, I found it was actually fibreglass and quite light.

Well here we are, the end of the year!

Firstly, I want to thank all of my students - who have dedicated their time, focus and energy to the club. We've had an incredible year, one of our most successful and I couldn't be prouder of the fantastic martial artists that the club has produced.

Secondly, Happy Christmas and New Year to everyone - students, friends and family. It's finally time for my personal reflection on the success of the year, and I can honestly say 2018 has made me very happy indeed!

This year we held two regional championships, an invitational and we also attended the World Championships in London! We had a winner in the World Championships (Isabel) as well as all the others - which brings more silverware back to the club.
