Since public discourse about HIV/AIDS began in 1981, a variety of religious grammars have been formulated, often at cross-purposes, to assign meaning to the epidemic. The disease’s complex interaction with religion has been used to prophesize looming apocalypses, both religious and national, demand greater moral solicitude among the citizenry, forge political advantage within America’s partisan political landscape, mobilize empathy and compassion for those stricken by the disease, and construct existential meaning for those who have already been consigned to physical and social death. Several studies fruitfully have explored specific registers of religious discourse and the AIDS epidemic, particularly in regard to processes of social stigmatization and combating its very effects. However, assumptions about the secular aims of scientific inquiry as well as the presumably secular trajectory of American national culture have dampened a more robust consideration of religion within the history of HIV/AIDS. In most synoptic histories of AIDS, religion is constructed as either a wincing footnote to the Religious Right or as an occasional and bland example of salubrious Christian charity posed against the backdrop of disease and death. Ambivalent Blood seeks to extend such analysis beyond a digestible footnote by disinterring the often polysemous and ambivalent interaction of HIV/AIDS and religious discourses within American culture. Though not a historiographic work, the current project illuminates the complicated ways in which religious and HIV/AIDS discourses i coalesced around the very definition of America itself. Like the Cold War that preceded and the Global War on Terror that followed, the AIDS crisis precipitated significant and contested recourse to the religious imaginary in the effort to forge conceptions of Americanness and citizen belonging. ii DEDICATION The French performance artist Orlan made famous the dictum, “Remember the future!” Ambivalent Blood exists as a very small exercise in historical inquiry and cultural analysis that acknowledges that every present moment is an amalgam of past experience, immediate concern, and tentative longing for the future. The over determined rhetoric of death that rendered those with the HIV/AIDS – an accident of nature – as unnatural and unsuitable for life may seem, in hindsight, little more than an embarrassing artifact. But the past remains a predator, and it seems the rosy comforts of post-AIDS discourse promises almost as much as it forgets. Poet Tory Dent, a modern day Antigone, serves at the conclusion of this work as a counterfigure to the impulse to forget and compulsively paper over the exquisite vulnerabilities made so apparent in the first decades of the epidemic. Indeed, we would do well to remember from Sophocles’s Antigone that the challenges of one generation do not escape the next: ...as in ancient times I see the sorrow of the house, the living heirs of the old ancestral kings, piling on the sorrows of the dead and one generation cannot free the next –1 To that end, the present work is dedicated to all who have ventured forth to signify AIDS in ways which resist casting those with the disease as something other than objects of neglect. Consideration of their work, their struggle to represent HIV/AIDS, provides a framework for future generations needing to develop a praxis of resistance when the rights to be mourned, to be considered 1 Sophocles Antigone, lines 666-670. iii American and acknowledged as human, are withheld, as surely will occur again with plagues, biological, discursive, and otherwise, looming on the horizon. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A single page of acknowledgements hardly seems adequate to recognize the generosity of the many who helped bring Ambivalent Blood into existence. The need for economy combined with the desire to extol with due poetry those who have shown me such intellectual and emotional kindness over the past five years make this, perhaps, the most anxiety-inducing part of the project. Born in the late 1970’s, I represent the outer edge of the last American generation to be socialized into a world in which HIV/AIDS prefigured biological and national catastrophe. Though the biography of my adolescence is void of any intimate connection to the epidemic, I nonetheless recall being awash in vivid images of cadaverous patients, grave political speeches, temperate calls for tolerance and compassion, skeleton-clad protestors demanding action from City

In 1982, Cleve returned to San Francisco to work in the district office of State Assemblyman Art Agnos. One of the first to recognize the threat of AIDS, Cleve co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation in 1983. Cleve Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Harvey Milk in 1985. Since then, the Quilt has grown to become the world’s largest community arts project, memorializing the lives of over 80,000 people killed by AIDS.

Stoner 2013 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT RECONSIDERING RANDY SHILTS: EXAMINING THE REPORTAGE OF AMERICA’S AIDS CHRONICLER The role of openly-gay reporter and author Randy Shilts (1951-1994) is examined related to his use of journalistic practices and places him on a continuum of traditional reporting roles as considered in the context of twentieth century philosophers Walter Lippmann and John Dewey. Reporter functions demonstrated by Shilts are examined, including those dictated by expectations of either strong journalistic influence over society and media consumers, or those more aligned with democratic practices where education and participation emphasize strong roles for society and media consumers. Using a biographical approach including 17 primary source interviews of former colleagues, critics, sources and family/friends, the examination of Shilts’s work as both a reporter and noted author is presented as being heavily influenced by his forthcoming attitudes about disclosure of his sexual orientation from the start of his career and his desire to explain or unpack aspects of gay culture, and ultimately the AIDS crisis, to heterosexual audiences. Careful examination of the posthumous critique of Shilts’s work – including his construction of Patient Zero – is undertaken. The study concludes that Shilts fully engaged a Lippmann-esque approach embodied in an authoritarian role for journalism that sought to change the world in which it was offered, and did so perhaps most influentially during the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in America.

    Social Movements (SOCY S216) Summer 2020, Session B (June 29 – July 31) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM, Location TBA Instructor: Roger Baumann ([email protected]) Description This course is about how people act collectively to challenge the status quo of powerful political, social, economic, and cultural systems that resist change. Social movements that challenge such systems vary widely in terms of their group identities, social locations, strategies for action, particular demands, and tactics. In order to better understand social movements, we will begin broadly with some key questions: What are social movements and how do we approach the task of defining them? What tools do we need to analyze how movements work? And how can we appreciate how and why some movements succeed in achieving their goals while others apparently fail? In this intensive 5-week summer course, we will focus on one case study per week, using each case to work through a set of concepts that will help us understand particular social movements and how movements work more generally. We will pay attention to how movements operate both inwardly (oriented towards their own members) and outwardly (oriented towards opponents and others). Our primary empirical focus will be on social movements within the United States, but we will also pay close attention to the ways that collective behavior and protest in the U.S. matters globally. Our study of social movements will move back and forth between abstract concepts and particular case studies. Our primary empirical case studies are: 1) The U.S. civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s; 2) Organized Labor in the 20th century, 3) Identity-focused movements that emerged from the 1960s, especially the gay rights and LGBTQ movements, 4) Populist movements during the Obama presidency (The Tea Party movement and its challengers); and 5) #BlackLivesMatter and the Movement for Black Lives.

Sal Veder/AP Photo In 1978, California lawmaker John Briggs put an initiative on the state ballot. A ballot initiative asks voters to make an important decision. If enough people support the initiative, it could become a new state law. Briggs' Proposition 6 was known as the Briggs Initiative. It would have forced any gay or lesbian teacher in California public schools to be fired. Also, any teacher who supported gay rights would be fired. Thanks to an effort by California activists, the law lost by more than a million votes. Well-known activists including Harvey Milk, Cleve Jones and Sally Miller Gearhart helped to defeat the initiative. In 2018, the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco opened an exhibit. It was called "The Briggs Initiative: A Scary Proposition." It told the story of how Briggs' proposal was defeated. Liston Liston 2 History now shows evidence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) infecting people prior to the epidemic1 that began in the 1980s. Though the first documented case in the United States was in Missouri in 1968, it was not until 1981 that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) officially published a report identifying a cluster of similar and overlapping cases of five otherwise healthy young, gay men in Los Angeles. 2 3 While this report may have created awareness amongst medical professionals, nobody could have imagined how the HIV/AIDS epidemic would disrupt United States culture. When the CDC published the report, facts were limited and the only overlapping evidence was that the patients were young men, living in Los Angeles, and active homosexuals. While these facts were all true, this seemingly benign medical statement in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report would be the first step in a long line of misinformation, fear, panic, and a fanning of the cultural flames of homophobia. On November 18, 1977, Harvey Milk, who ten days earlier had been elected as the first openly gay member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervi- sors, tape-recorded a will that included: “This is to be played only in the event of my death by assassination. I fully realize that a person who stands for what I stand for, a gay activist, becomes a target for somebody who is insecure, terrified, afraid, or very disturbed themselves…. If I am assassinated, I ask for the movement to continue, for the movement to grow.” A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were shot to death by Dan White, a disgruntled fellow city supervisor. As Milk had hoped, the movement No. continued, and grew. And Milk became a legend. In 2009, President Obama awarded him a posthumous Presidential Medal of S 8 5 E Freedom; in 2014 the U.S. Postal Service issued a Harvey Milk “Forever” stamp; and in 2016 the U.S. Navy named a ship in his A S O N honor.
