Harvey, who spent four seasons with the Golden Eagles as an assistant coach and interim head coach for both the men’s and women’s programs, comes back to Cal State L.A. after spending seven years as the head women’s soccer coach at Cal Poly Pomona. She led the Broncos to an outstanding 2012 season that resulted in Cal Poly Pomona’s first NCAA playoff appearance since 2001. She directed the Broncos to a 10-6-3 overall record and an 8-4-3 mark in conference play. The season was highlighted by a team-record 11-match unbeaten streak that helped the Broncos overcome a 1-4-1 start. During their 8-0-3 run, the Broncos outscored their opponents, 25-6. Harvey had a 59-55-17 record at Cal Poly Pomona in her seven seasons leading the program. During her Isabelle Harvey tenure, Harvey’s players earned 24 All-CCAA awards, two CCAA Freshman of the Year awards, a conference Head Coach Newcomer of the Year award, four NSCAA All-West Region awards and two CoSIDA Academic All-District awards. Harvey began her college coaching career at Cal State L.A., where she was an assistant coach in 2001 before becoming the interim head coach for both programs in 2002. She was the top assistant coach for both programs in the 2003 and 2004 seasons before being hired as an assistant women’s coach at USC, where she was a star player for four seasons. Harvey helped guide USC to a 13-6-4 overall record and into the NCAA playoffs in 2005. www.CSULAathletics.com She was then hired at Cal Poly Pomona in 2006 and spent the next seven years guiding the Broncos. Harvey also had an exceptional playing career and was recently honored by Quebec as its “Athlete of the Century.” She was presented with the Centennial Medal as one of the five leading figures to influence the development of soccer in the region with Harvey being recognized as a player. She started all three games for the Canadian National Team at the 1999 World Cup and registered two assists. She currently ranks 13th in Canadian history with 44 international caps. She also played for Ajax Fram, a semi-pro team, which won national championships from 2001-04. Harvey was the Pac-10 Player of the Year at USC in 1998 and still holds school career records for goals, assists, game-winning goals and points. She is the only player in the program’s history to earn All-America honors all four seasons at USC. Harvey was the team MVP three times and a team captain her final three years with the Trojans. She achieved her “B” coaching license through the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2012. Harvey also earned a graduate degree in coaching and administration from Concordia University in Irvine in 2012 and recorded a grade point average of 4.0. After spending the 2012 season as the interim head coach at another California Collegiate Athletic Association program, Erik Garcia joins the Cal State L.A. women’s soccer program as an assistant coach. Garcia has six years of college coaching experience heading into the 2013 season. Garcia was Cal Poly Pomona’s interim men’s soccer head coach last season after serving as the associate head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs at Kansas Wesleyan in 2011. He helped Kansas Wesleyan’s men’s team to a national ranking as high as No. 8 and a school record for wins in a season with 17, while the women’s team also won a conference title. Prior to his one year in Kansas, Garcia was an assistant coach for four seasons at two schools for current Cal State San Bernardino head men’s coach Lance Thompson. Garcia was at Cal Poly Pomona with Thompson for the 2009 and 2010 seasons and the Broncos enjoyed great success, winning 20 games over the two seasons and just missing qualifying for the CCAA Championship Tournament. Erik Garcia He was with Thompson for two outstanding years at Notre Dame de Namur and helped the Argonauts to a 24-12-4. The timing of my election is particularly significant to me as we are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The LA84 Foundation is the legacy of those Games. As I reflect back to the 1984 Olympic Games, one word comes to mind: excellence. There is no better word to describe the manner in which the Games were organized and delivered by my board colleague, Peter V. Ueberroth, his management team, staff and thousands of volunteers. I recall the excellence displayed by the best athletes from around the world as they competed to earn Olympic medals.

  • Transnational Sports and Identities in Southern California and Mexico, 1930–1945
Playing Across Borders: Transnational Sports and Identities in Southern California and Mexico, 1930–1945 JOSÉ M. ALAMILLO The author is a member of the Chicana/o studies program at California State University, Channel Islands. This article examines the local and transnational dimensions of sports in Southern California through the activities of the Mexican Athletic Association of South- ern California (MAASC) from the Great Depression to the end of World War II. This amateur athletic organization promoted sports in the barrios and colonias throughout Southern California and forged transnational ties with the Mexican government and its sports federation. MAASC and its related activities reflected two competing historical trajectories that have been subjects of debate in Chicano historiography. MAASC sports simultaneously reinvigorated transnational ties with Mexico that emphasized a México de afuera identity and contributed to the making of a Mexican American identity that connected immigrants to Southern California and American society in general. Ultimately, both impulses helped to instill a new political confidence among MAASC members to challenge the Los Angeles Department of Playground and Recreation’s paternalistic approach toward the Mexican community. José Arteaga was born in Baja California, Mexico, moved to Los Angeles during his teen years, and in 1921 teamed up with Lamberto Alvarez Gayou to form the first all-Mexican basket- ball team, “Bohemia.” Gayou eventually became the president of Mexico’s first sports federation, and Arteaga became a basketball player and coach in the city’s new amateur athletic association. Arteaga coached several teams, with only the best players chosen to play exhibition games in Mexico.

LAURIE MERCIER, Ph.D., Chair ROBERT BAUMAN, Ph.D. JEFFREY SANDERS, Ph.D. LUZ MARIA GORDILLO, Ph.D. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation has been many years in the making. It all began in 2004 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Chandra Manning, Gina Hames, Carlton Benson, and Beth Kraig instilled in me a desire to pursue history as a profession. I completed a second major in history during the course of one academic year, and I do not believe I could have done it that quickly without the encouragement of Chuck Nelson and David Gerry at the Office of International Student Services. Important during my time at PLU was also the support of Helen Rogers, a close friend and an experienced history major. While my interest in Norwegian Americans’ relationship with Norway and Norwegian culture began during my time at PLU, it was during my years pursuing a Master’s degree at Montana State University in Bozeman that this project began to take shape.
