The initiative called on “competing members of the ruling family and other leading figures” to stop interfering in the election through “political money” and other means that could influence the outcome of the parliamentary polls, allowing them to ensure the success of their “candidates” in the election. His former lover, Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, had collapsed in a Lancaster hotel. She refused medical attention and instead reached out to Turner, who at Grahame’s request took her to his warm if chaotic family home in Liverpool. The pair had met a few years previously, their paths crossing in a Primrose Hill guesthouse in which they were lodging. Turner was an aspiring actor, Grahame a fading star. She had made her name in the Hollywood studio system, often playing the moll, the floozy or as Turner notes in his memoir ‘the tart with the heart,’ appearing in a string of film noirs, including the likes of the sad and hauntingly romantic In a Lonely Place with Humphrey Bogart (shot by her husband at the time, Nicholas Ray) and the Fritz Lang classic The Big Heat opposite Lee Marvin. Gloria shone in the likes of Crossfire, for which she was Oscar nominated, Naked Alibi and Sudden Fear, while her turn in The Bad and The Beautiful scooped her an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress. -

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE DETERMINING THE EFFECT OF INDIVIDUAL ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS AND WINS ON SUBSEQUENT BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCE BENJAMIN DENKIN Spring 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Finance, Spanish, and International Politics with honors in Finance Reviewed and approved* by the following: Laura Field Assosciate Professor of Finance Thesis Supervisor James Miles Professor of Finance, Joseph F. Bradley Fellow of Finance Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. ABSTRACT The executives of film industries are constantly searching for the “perfect formula” that will lead to a movie that is successful at the box office. While all studios often seek to put out well-received movies, the ultimate goal of the company is to produce films with a positive return on investment. While a number of factors such as genre, Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rating, run time, and release date affect a movie’s performance at the box office, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect of an Academy Award nomination or win on an actor or actress’s immediately subsequent film. The nominees and winners in the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress are examined for the years 1990 to 2009, presenting twenty years of data for each award. Each actor/actress’s next film (first film after Academy Award ceremony in which he/she was nominated) is examined for data purposes, and the findings are presented herein. i TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract……………………………………………………………………………..i List of Figures……………………………………………………………………….ii Acknowledgements…………………………………………………………………iii Chapter 1. -

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016 SPECTRUM Hollywood Film Awards: De Niro, Portman support Clinton on eve of election ith the presidential election less than two days away, several celebrities used Sunday’s Hollywood WFilm Awards to stump for Hillary Clinton. The event- which host James Corden jokingly called “the last awards show before the apocalypse” honored some of the biggest names in film, including Matthew McConaughey, Natalie Portman, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro. Despite the looming election, the mood inside the Beverly Hilton ballroom was light, not tense. Corden opened the show with a few political jokes. “This year they brought back ‘Star Wars’ with a female lead. They reboot- ed ‘Ghostbusters’ with a female lead. And I pray to God they reboot the Clinton presidency with a female lead,” he quipped during the monologue. “Bernie Sanders is here tonight,” Corden announced. “I’m joking, I’m joking. I just wanted to see the look of terror on Clint Eastwood’s face.” Throughout the night, the A-list atten- dees stressed the importance of voting. DiCaprio, who shared the Hollywood documentary award with Fisher Stevens for their eco-film “Before the Flood,” called the lack of discussion about climate change by both Clinton and Donald Trump “completely unacceptable.” “It is an issue that has been willfully ignored and disputed for corporate profits, political capital, and short term personal gains,” the actor explained. “Even in our own presidential and vice presidential debates-our most widely viewed stages for the issues that define our future-not one question on climate change was asked.
