Introduction1 This paper is an analysis of the common lexical semantics in ethnobiological classification in Dalabon (Gunwinyguan, non-Pama-Nyungan), based on the intensive documentation in Bordulk et al. (2012), who cover 821 names for over 550 species, an unusually high number of named species for languages in Australia’s Top End (GW pers. com.). Dalabon shares many of the common formal and semantic features described for ethnoclassification in Australian languages. I present an overview and detailed exemplification of these phenomena in Dalabon, and highlight data which do not pattern according to common observations of ‘formal linguistic similarities indicate semiotic relationship’ in Australian languages. -

FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract – The King Edward River, in the far north of the Kimberley region of Western Australia drains approximately 10,000 km2 and discharges into the Timor Sea near the town of Kalumburu. This study represents an ichthyological survey of the river’s freshwaters and revealed that the number of freshwater fishes of the King Edward River is higher than has previously been recorded for a Western Australian river. Twenty-six strictly freshwater fish species were recorded, which is three species higher than the much larger Fitzroy River in the southern Kimberley. The study also identified a number of range extensions, including Butler’s Grunter and Shovel-nosed Catfish to the west, and the Slender Gudgeon to the north and east. A possibly undescribed species of glassfish, that differs morphologically from described species in arrangement of head spines, fin rays, as well as relative body measurements, is reported. A considerable proportion of Jenkins’ Grunter, which is widespread throughout the system but essentially restricted to main channel sites, had ‘blubber-lips’. There were significant differences in the prevailing fish fauna of the different reaches of the King Edward River system. Thus fish associations in the upper King Edward River main channel were significantly different to those in the tributaries and the main channel of the Carson River. -

The present study investigated the reproductive biology of Sciades herzbergii in the Paraíba do Norte River Estuary, Brazil. We aimed to characterize the reproduction of the species with respect to sex ratio, spawning season, condition factor and length at first maturity. Specimens were captured between August 2009 and July 2010 in a stretch of the main channel of the estuary. In the laboratory, they were measured, weighed and macroscopically classified with regard to sex and gonad development stage, and their gonads were weighted. The monthly distribution of the sexes and their respective stages of maturation were determined. The gonadosomatic index (GSI), condition factor (K) and the length at first maturity were calculated for males and females. The sex ratio was determined monthly and through- out the entire study period and the chi-square test was used to evaluate if the sex ratio differed from 1:1. The Pearson’s correlation test was used to determine the correlation between GSI and K values. A total of 260 individuals were captured. It was impossible to determine the sex of 32 individuals, possibly due to their young age. The sex ratio did not differ throughout the overall study period, but significant differences were found in December and May, with a pre- dominance of females, and in March, when males predominated. -

I Abstract Although the vast majority of fishes spend their entire lives in either fresh water or the sea, some are capable of moving across salinity gradients. “Diadromous” species migrate between fresh and salt water on a regular, well-defined basis, whereas “euryhaline” species move across salinity gradients freely and not necessarily at particular life history stages. These species are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic developments that regulate flow and diminish connectivity between freshwater and marine biomes, such as the construction of dams and extraction of water for agricultural use. As a result, diadromous and euryhaline species are considered among the most threatened vertebrate groups in the world. Studying fish movement behaviour provides vital information on the importance of different aquatic habitats and species’ ecological roles, and improves environmental management outcomes for diadromous species. -
