Panera Bread® Challenges Food System's Transparency With Media Contact: Jessica Hesselschwerdt [email protected] FOOD INTERRUPTED: PANERA BREAD® CHALLENGES FOOD SYSTEM’S TRANSPARENCY WITH WHOLE GRAIN COMMITMENT AND NEW DIGITAL PLATFORM First National Restaurant Company to Post Whole Grain Content in Breads ST. LOUIS, Oct. 16, 2018 – Panera Bread wants people to think about food, what’s in it and where it comes from, so they can make informed decisions about what and how they eat. Bread is in Panera’s DNA, and today the company announces it is the first national restaurant company to disclose the whole grain content of breads on its menu. On all breads over 50% whole grain, Panera now labels servings of whole grain per slice, roll or bagel, as well as the whole grain percentage, so guests know exactly what they are eating. The new labeling commitment coincides with the launch of “Food Interrupted,” Panera’s first-ever digital platform aimed at providing increased transparency. Each episode follows leaders in the food world as they meet everyday heroes who have dedicated their lives to changing America’s food system. The platform launches today with “Grains Interrupted,” in which chef Marcus Samuelsson and Weiser Family Farms’ Jon Hammond discuss the importance of ancient grains and their role in the future of food. "Food Interrupted" is now streaming on Facebook Watch; to learn more about the series, visit Food-Interrupted.com. Latest Transparency Commitment Challenges Restaurants Using Confusing Whole Grain Names Although the USDA recommends whole grains make up at least half of all grains eaten in a day, more than half of the country’s top restaurant chains do not offer a single whole grain option on their menu. Those that do may use vague terms like “multigrain,” “nine grain,” or “made with whole grains” that may create an undue health halo for their bread offerings. By law, a bread can only be called whole grain if it offers 50% or more whole grain content. Panera currently offers a wider range of whole grain offerings than any other major restaurant chain, including its new Farmstyle Loaf, made with 55% whole grain and offering 1.2 servings of whole grain per slice. “Food Interrupted” Digital Platform Advocates for Food System Change In production with Participant Media’s SoulPancake and ACE Content and cooperation with HuffPost, “Food Interrupted,” aims to spark a dialogue about the food system, ultimately giving people more information and simple ways to affect change. The six episode weekly series will feature Marcus Samuelsson, Hannah Hart, Sam Talbot, Kevin Curry, Chris Cosentino and Rainn Wilson on topics ranging from clean ingredients and sugar consumption to animal welfare and plant-based meals. Comment by Blaine Hurst, Panera CEO “At our size and scale, we believe it’s part of our job to help revolutionize the food industry from the inside out – challenging the way things have always been done. From the whole grain in our breads to the ingredients in our food – we will be relentless, leading by example and committed to increased transparency,” Hurst said. “But we can’t do it alone. People deserve to know more about their food and how it makes its way to their plate. Together, we can make a real change in the food system.” Upcoming Food Interrupted episodes include: - “Plants Interrupted” (airing 10/22) - Kevin Curry (@fitmencook) and firefighter turned cookbook author Rip Esselstyn visit a firehouse to discuss the benefits of a more plant-based diet. - “Sugar Interrupted” (10/29) – Chef Sam Talbot, a Type1 Diabetic, discusses managing sugar intake and explores emerging technology that could be a potential game changer for those struggling with diabetes. - “Eggs Interrupted” (11/5) – New York Times Best-Selling author and food enthusiast, Hannah Hart, visits an egg farm to learn what makes an egg 100% real and discusses what some “eggs” are really made of. - “Meat Interrupted” (11/12) – Chef Chris Cosentino visits a cattle ranch to learn about groundbreaking, humane technology helping to track animal health. - “Clean Interrupted” (11/19) – Actor Rainn Wilson, in pursuit of his own clean food journey, explores cutting-edge crop sharing among urban gardeners. Comment by Sara Burnett, Director of Wellness “At Panera, we’ve always tried to do what’s right, regardless of what our industry has accepted as efficient or good enough,” Burnett said. “Interestingly, multiple whole grain options available at grocers through our Panera at Home bread business helped remind us what really matters in bread and inspired us to translate their progress into our restaurants. Guests deserve real, measureable information, but also options – and we offer more whole grain options than any other national restaurant chain. When we combine our own actions with consumer education in our new “Food Interrupted” series, we believe we can create real demand for better food.” For more information, visit PaneraBread.com/WholeGrains and www.Food-Interrupted.com. # # # About Panera Bread Thirty years ago, at a time when quick service meant low quality, Panera set out to challenge this expectation. We believed that food that was good and that you could feel good about, served in a warm and welcoming environment by people who cared, could bring out the best in all of us. To us, that is food as it should be and that is why we exist. So we began with a simple commitment: to bake bread fresh every day in our bakery-cafes. No short cuts, just bakers with simple ingredients and hot ovens. Each night, any unsold bread and baked goods were shared with neighbors in need. These traditions carry on today, as we have continued to find ways to be an ally for wellness to our guests. That means crafting a menu of soups, salads and sandwiches that we are proud to feed our families. Like poultry and pork raised without antibiotics on our salads and sandwiches. A commitment to transparency and options that empower our guests to eat the way they want. Seasonal flavors and whole grains. And a commitment to removing or not using artificial additives (flavors, sweeteners, preservatives and colors from artificial sources) in the food in our bakery-cafes. Why? Because we think that simpler is better and we believe in serving food as it should be. Because when you don’t have to compromise to eat well, all that is left is the joy of eating. We’re also focused on improving quality and convenience. With investments in technology and operations, we now offer new ways to enjoy your Panera favorites – like mobile ordering and Rapid PickUp® for to-go orders and delivery – all designed to make things easier for our guests. As a result, Panera has been one of the most successful restaurant companies in history. What started as one 400-square-foot cookie store in Boston has grown into a company with more than 2,300 units, nearly $6 billion in system-wide sales, and over 100,000 associates. In more than 25 years as a publicly traded company, Panera has created significant shareholder value. In late 2017, Panera acquired Au Bon Pain Holding Co. Inc., parent company of the 304-unit Au Bon Pain bakery-café chain. The acquisition reunites Panera and Au Bon Pain, both of which were founded by Ron Shaich, and will intensify Panera’s growth in new real estate channels, including hospitals, universities and transportation centers. As of September 25, 2018, there were 2,097 bakery-cafes in 47 states and in Ontario, Canada, operating under the Panera Bread®, Saint Louis Bread Co. ® or Paradise Bakery & Cafe® names. WOMEN ON YOUTUBE: EXPLORING IDENTITY PERFORMANCES OF FEMALE CREATORS USING INTERSECTIONALITY AND MEDIA ECOLOGY Alyssa N. Fisher A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2019 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Lubomir Popov Graduate Faculty Representative John Dowd Sandra Faulkner © 2019 Alyssa Fisher All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Makeup tutorials, cooking demonstrations, cocktail recipes, fashion reviews: these are the topics dominating the content of some of the most popular channels on YouTube that are led by women. In this project, conceptualizing the ways in which women express their identity through everyday enactments of life in public and at home is examined through case studies of performances from four female youtubers. The platform’s emerging content, new practices of creative control, and distribution are shaping production, consumption, and the conversation about feminism and gender identity. Through the lenses of visual analysis, media ecology, critical feminist media studies, and performativity of gender, the study examines the established ways in which four women on YouTube enact their identities online, picking and choosing which identifiers, qualities, characteristics, and actions are shared in an effort to personify their chosen self. I first use a critical feminist framework and perform a qualitative visual analysis of YouTube videos from female YouTube creators. Findings include the setting and negotiating of content templates, collaboration, use of YouTube trending content, revealing intersectional identifiers, using comedic frames, dismantling the male gaze, and catchphrases. Secondly, an exploration and analysis are done on the media ecology of the YouTube Studio.

The Power of Content Creators Social Campaigns on YouTube Student Name: Bianca Andreea Banu Supervisor: Dr. Alex Gekker Second reader: Amanda Wasielewski Program: MA Media Studies Specialisation: New Media and Digital Culture Date: 26th of June, 2017 !ii !iii Abstract For a long time now, spreading awareness about different social causes has been done by using different media channels such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television or social media. These channels were and are the fastest ways through which a message is able to reach a high number of people. Nowadays, the new generation gathers their everyday information and news mostly through Internet-based forms of communication. Consequently, one of the most successful ways for both transmitting and gathering information is via social media, specifically by making use of Social Network Websites (SNSs). Therefore, it is important to further analyse the potential of such platforms and how successful they are in not only spreading awareness, but also getting people involved. Since its launch in 2005, YouTube has developed and emerged into something rather different than its initial purpose - that of a video sharing platform. The content which can be found on YouTube nowadays ranges from low quality amateur clips to high quality, well- produced videos. The creators of those videos have various aims, from sharing content with friends and families, to motoring their content as a form of income. Moreover, each tool and functionality present on YouTube has developed overtime as well as the potential uses of the overall platform. Therefore, it is essential that new researches should address the new affordances of the platform, and the practices that emerged as a result of the platform’s growth.

Siegle, Chair Kelly E. Pender Paul M. Sorrentino April 24, 2014 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: YouTube, identity, autonomy, culture industry, critical theory, television Copyright 2014 YouTube is the New Tube: Identity, Power, and Creator-Consumer Relationships in a New Culture (Cottage) Industry David Calkins ABSTRACT YouTube is a new kind of media, offering new ways to search for meaning and identity in the digital information age. In this study, I explore how the struggle to establish meaning and identity is played out in this new cultural space, centering on amateur creators as they navigate tensions and test semiotic relationships with their productions online. I first situate YouTube within a larger context of cultural criticism that sees meaning as socially negotiated by consumers as active participants with cultural productions. I then discuss television as a cultural force and the effects of a new digital territory for these forces. By grounding my discussion in an understanding of media ecology that assumes a more varied and diverse collection of available cultural material will yield a healthier media ecology and thus healthier cultural subjects, I argue that YouTube is a positive intensification of television because it allows more viewers to participate in and more importantly participate in this media system. I then use two particular YouTube creators (Philip DeFranco and Hannah Hart) to demonstrate how these ideas are articulated in practice and how this process is not without its own problems.

YouTube, and YouTube fan culture, complicates liveness by creating several different live experiences (both digital and IRL), often at the same time. YouTube content creators are skilled at utilizing both new technology and older forms of live performance to engage their audiences and provide an unexpected live experience. In this thesis I will explore how liveness entwines both creator and audience in a variety of platforms, including purely digital live experiences through live streams, online video conventions like VidCon that facilitate both a digital and physical live experience, and the recent trend of YouTube live shows that draw on traditional theatrical forms to create a physical live experience.

  • Popular Youtube Creators Align to Support Net
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 8, 2014 Contact: Paul DeGeorge, Executive Director, the Harry Potter Alliance, [email protected] Michael Weinberg, Vice President, Public Knowledge, [email protected] POPULAR YOUTUBE CREATORS ALIGN TO SUPPORT NET NEUTRALITY On August 20th, Public Knowledge and the Harry Potter Alliance began an initiative to recruit YouTube video creators to voice their support for net neutrality through the site www.VideoCreatorsforNetNeutrality.org. YouTube video creators are coming together to express one important view: without net neutrality, they would not exist. This is one of the first times that the online video creator community has come together around a policy issue that impacts them directly. Currently, over 11,000 unique creators have signed on to the website, representing over 150,000 videos and nearly 14 billion views. In addition to the website, video creators are being asked to make videos supporting net neutrality that can be shown on a giant billboard outside the FCC. Video broadcasts will begin on September 16th at 7am and continue for 36 hours. The campaign brings together many of YouTube’s most important creators including video bloggers (Vlogbroth- ers, Hannah Hart, WheezyWaiter), educational creators (MinutePhysics, Crash Course, SciShow, the Brain Scoop, Veritasium), and entertainers (EpicLLoyd, Improv Everywhere, Annoying Orange, Team StarKid). John Green (Vlogbrothers, Crash Course and best-selling young adult author of “The Fault in Our Stars”) notes, “Net neutrality allows independent content creators to reach audiences directly. Without it there would be no YouTube or reddit or tumblr and there would also be no vlogbrothers or crash course.” Net Neutrality is important to the online video community because the proposed FCC rules could allow Internet Service Provides to charge premiums to creators to reach their audience.

  • How Youtube Developed Into a Successful Platform for User-Generated Content
52 — Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in Communications, Vol. 7, No. 1 • Spring 2016 How YouTube Developed into a Successful Platform for User-Generated Content Margaret Holland Cinema and Television Arts Elon University Abstract Since its development, YouTube, the world’s third most popular online destination, has transformed from a video-sharing site into a job opportunity for content creators in both new and mainstream media. Based on content analysis, the study examined how three prominent YouTubers have created a successful personal brand. Analysis revealed the common characteristics that these online celebrities shared, the appeal of their content to viewers, and their use of traditional media to strengthen their branding. The study also found that younger viewers prefer watching YouTube videos because they were able to relate to the authenticity of user-generated content. I. Introduction On October 2, 2010, Felix Kjellberg uploaded a 2-minute YouTube video of himself speaking on camera while playing a video game. Today, Kjellberg, better known by his YouTube alias, “PewDiePie,” uploads to an online audience of more than 40 million subscribers. At just 24, Kjellberg has developed his online persona into a brand name that pulls in an estimated $4 million in ad sales a year (Kain, 2014). Kjellberg is not alone. An astonishing number of individuals have made YouTube their career. With consistent viewing from cable’s most sought-after age demographic, ages 18 to 49, YouTubers like Kjellberg have formed a virtual yet powerful relationship with their viewers (Luscombe, 2015). User participation helps in creating the stability of loyal audiences. The wide variety of content makes YouTube a place where just about anyone can find a video that interests them, whether they are looking for Kjellberg’s video game commentary or want to watch a beauty guru’s daily makeup routine.
