Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

BIBLIOFICTIONS: OVIDIAN HEROINES AND THE TUDOR BOOK by Lindsay Ann Reid A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Lindsay Ann Reid (2009) ABSTRACT ―Bibliofictions: Ovidian Heroines and the Tudor Book‖ Lindsay Ann Reid Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Graduate Department of English, University of Toronto This dissertation explores how the mythological heroines from Ovid‘s Heroides and Metamorphoses were catalogued, conflated, reconceived, and recontextualized in vernacular literature; in so doing, it joins considerations of voice, authority, and gender with reflections on Tudor technologies of textual reproduction and ideas about the book. In the late medieval and Renaissance eras, Ovid‘s poetry stimulated the imaginations of authors ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower to Isabella Whitney, William Shakespeare, and Michael Drayton. Ovid‘s characteristic bookishness—his interest in textual revision and his thematization of the physicality and malleability of art in its physical environments—was not lost upon these postclassical interpreters who engaged with his polysemous cast of female characters. His numerous English protégés replicated and expanded Ovid‘s metatextual concerns by reading and rewriting his metamorphic poetry in light of the metaphors through which they understood both established networks of scribal dissemination and emergent modes of printed book production. My study of Greco-Roman tradition and English ―bibliofictions‖ (or fictive representations of books, their life cycles, and the communication circuits in which they operate) melds literary analysis with the theoretical concerns of book history by focusing on intersections and interactions between physical, metaphorical, and imaginary books. -

13 Medievalism in English Renaissance Literature Deanne Williams Do English Renaissance authors engage in medievalism? The term "medieval" is the creation of the nineteenth-century Swiss historian, Jakob Butckhardt, whose argu ment for the Renaissance required a conception of the Middle Ages to define what came before it. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the terms "medieval" and "medievalism" appear first in the writings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, and A. W. N. Pugin, tying them to the nostalgia and aesthetic ideals of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the Gothic Revival, and the Arts and Crafts movement. The alternative term for the period is the "Middle Ages," first used by John Foxe, according to the OED, in his work of Protestant martyrology, Actes and Monuments of the English Martyrs (1570). Foxe refers to the pre-Reformation period as "the middle age," which he describes as "the primitive tyme of the church." Foxe is translating a Latin term, medium aevum, devised by Petrarch and other humanists ro denote the period between the ancients and the moderns ro describe England's Catholic past. Medievalism and the idea of the Middle Ages are retrospective inventions, having less to do with the qualities of the period itself than with the agendas of those who seek to describe it. According ro Brian Stock's oft-quoted formulation: The Renaissance invented the Middle Ages in order to define itself; the Enlightenment perpetuated them in order to admire itself; and the Romantics revived them in order to escape from themselves. In their widest ramifications "the Middle Ages" thus consti tute one of the most prevalent cultural myths of the modern world. -

ISBN 978-0-19-926295-3 Jordi Sánchez-Martí University of Alicante [email protected] Just as information technologies have in modern times transformed the processes of production, distribution and consumption of texts, the advent of the printing press in the fifteenth century changed the face of written culture in Western Europe by replacing the artisan production of textual artefacts with a mechanical one, thus making books available to a much wider public than hitherto. Eisenstein’s seminal work of 1979 contributed to lend significant cultural consequences to this technological development she described as the printing revolution. More recently, however, Eisenstein’s theses have been revised and qualified in various ways (cf. Johns 1998), and the book under review in part adds to that effort. Instead of favouring a teleological account of print culture as an agent of cultural transformation, Gillespie puts the emphasis on the fact that “changes we perceive as being in some way related to the newness of print ... cannot be detached from old ways of thinking about what it means for a text to be written, copied, or read” (16). That is, in order for the printing press to have the impact it is afforded, it had to come into existence under certain conditions that made the transformation possible, not as a radical change divorced from its cultural background, but instead as a gradual development, as now happens with the implementation of information technologies. -

Classic Poetry Series Stephen Hawes - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Stephen Hawes(1474-1523) Stephen Hawes (died 1523), was a popular English poet during the Tudor period who is now little known. He was probably born in Suffolk owing to the commonness of the name in that area and, if his own statement of his age may be trusted, was born about 1474. He was educated at Oxford and travelled in England, Scotland and France. On his return his various accomplishments, especially his most excellent vein in poetry, procured him a place at court. He was Groom of the Chamber to Henry VII, as early as 1502. According to Anthony Wood, he could repeat by heart the works of most of the English poets, especially the poems of John Lydgate, whom he called his master. He was still living in 1521, when it is stated in Henry VIII's household accounts that £6, 13s. 4d. was paid to Mr Hawes for his play, and he died before 1530, when Thomas Field, in his Conversation between a Lover and a Jay, wrote "Yong Steven Hawse, whose soule God pardon, Treated of love so clerkly and well". His capital work is The History of Graunde Amour and la Bel Pucel, conteining the knowledge of the Seven Sciences and the Course of Mans Life in this Woride or The Passetyme of Pleasure, printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1509, but finished three years earlier. It was also printed with slightly varying titles by the same printer in 1517, by J. -

The two poems now reprinted are chiefly remarkable for their extreme rarity ; although by an early writer of allegorical verse, who flourished at the commencement of the Sixteenth century, and whose name Is usually regarded as one of the landmarks in the history of English poetry.. Among the successors of Chaucer, Gower, and Lydgate, Hawes and Skeltpn are indeed the only two who are worthy of special notice until we reach the times of Surrey, Sackvllle, and the earlier poets of the Elizabethan period. Of Stephen Hawes scarcely anything Is known. If we except the fact of his holding a place In the royal household of King Henry the Seventh. His usual designation Is that of " one of the Grooms of King Henry the Seventh his chamber." In the twenty-first year of his reign, on the 1st of January [1505-6], the English monarch gave Stephen Hawes the reward of ten shillings for a ballad. Bishop Bale, In 1557, has given " Hawes a high character for learning and accomplishments : In- genium ei foellcissimum contigit, et lingua ad omnem dicendi ratlonem accommoda; totaqae ejus vita, ut fertur, quasi virtutis exemplum fult;" and states, that he had pursued his studies in England, Scotland, and France.'
