The level of research has been very good this year. In addition to the generally high degree of research activity, the department was awarded two strategic university programs, or "SUP", one within the field of environmental geology: "Contaminant behaviour and spreading in soil and groundwater", and a second one with a more basic approach: "Fluid-rock interaction”. The latter one is a cross-disciplinary project between geology and physics. Both programs will run for four to five years and represent a significant strengthening of the Department's research profile. The leader of the first program is Per Aagaard and the second Bj0m Jamtveit.

During the past year, the Research Council of Norway decidedto carry out a review of geoscience in Norway. An international committee was nominated and all geoscience institutes submitted their reports during the early autumn. This review process represented a unique opportunity to critically review our own activity and plan for the future. At present, the universities are receiving reduced funding from the government, compared with previous years. Planning should therefore be based on a decline in resources. This requires a consolidation of activities and means that new initiatives should be based on reprioritizing or sharing resources with other related departments. There was a consensus about joining the efforts within petroleum related geoscience and environmental geology. The idea is to establish dedicated research groups focusing on the following topics: reservoir geology and petroleum geochemistry, basin evolution and environmental geology. This will provide an opportunity to integrate the various disciplines within the department into joint programs.

The high research profile of the institute is also demonstrated by two awards. Olav Eldholm received Statoil's research award for his long and outstanding work on the origin and development of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and surrounding passive margins including his contribution to the development of marine geophysics in Norway. Dr. Scient. student Tadeousz Gladczenko received the award of "Outstanding Student Paper" by the Tectonophysics section at the fall 1996 AGU meeting. 1997 was also a very productive year with respect to graduate students; 13 Dr. Scient. theses were completed and 29 Cand. Scient. degrees were obtained.

The contact with the petroleum and service industry, organized under our "Industrial Liaison", represents a valuable interface for the exchange of information. In addition to scientific problems, the recruiting issue was also raised at the last annual IL meeting.

Although the department is able to demonstrate high quality research, a high number of graduate students and extensive external support for research projects, we are facing serious problems in 1) recruiting students to geology, and 2) drainage of qualified students to the oil industry. The decrease in new students caused a reduction in funding from the university, in addition to the reduced number of students available to start in ■ graduate programs. In the short term, the drainage of qualified students to the oil industry causes major problems for the extensive number of research programs at the institute. In the longer term, this will lead to a major problem with respect to educating qualified applicants to future vacant positions. Solving this problem represents a major joint industry-university challenge for the future.

STRATIGRAPHY AND PALEONTOLOGY

Research is concentrated on the application of microfossils (diatoms, dinoflagellates, foraminifera, pollen and bryozoans) to two main fields: environmental geology and stratigraphy and paleoecology:

Environmental geology • Combined with geochemistry to study pollution history, eutrophication and climatic change in recent marine sediments from the Scandinavian coast • As paleoenvironmental and climatic indicators in Quaternary marine deposits and lake sediments

Stratigraphy and Paleoecology • Stratigraphy and paleoenvironments of Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits relevant to petroleum exploration • Biostratigraphy and paleoecology in Cenozoic deposits from ODP Sites • Modelling ecology of “living microfossils” in modern sediments for improved applications in paleoecology • Studies of Scandinavian and deposits

Voluminous basaltic lavas were extruded on the Norwegian continental margin during the early Tertiary continental breakup of Norway and Greenland. Seismic reflection data offshore M0re shows distinct reflection packages associated with the volcanic pile. These seismic facies units are interpreted to represent emplacement of lavas in a subaerial (Landward Flows),coastal (Lava Delta), or subaqueous (Inner Flow) environment.
