The aquifer is for a large part a coarse-grained ice contact delta deposited approx. 9 500 years before the present The sediment sources for the delta complex have been mainly at Trandum and LiZHelgebostad. The area is approx. 150 km2 and has an annual precipitation of 700 - 1000 mm. DISCLAIMER Portions of this document may be illegible electronic image products. Department of Geology Annual Report 1997 ____ Head of D epartment ’s Report The level of research has been very good this year. In addition to the generally high degree of research activity, the department was awarded two strategic university programs, or "SUP", one within the field of environmental geology: "Contaminant behaviour and spreading in soil and groundwater", and a second one with a more basic approach: "Fluid-rock interaction”. The latter one is a cross-disciplinary project between geology and physics. Both programs will run for four to five years and represent a significant strengthening of the Department's research profile. The leader of the first program is Per Aagaard and the second Bj0m Jamtveit. During the past year, the Research Council of Norway decidedto carry out a review of geoscience in Norway. An international committee was nominated and all geoscience institutes submitted their reports during the early autumn. This review process represented a unique opportunity to critically review our own activity and plan for the future. At present, the universities are receiving reduced funding from the government, compared with previous years. Planning should therefore be based on a decline in resources. This requires a consolidation of activities and means that new initiatives should be based on reprioritizing or sharing resources with other related departments. There was a consensus about joining the efforts within petroleum related geoscience and environmental geology.
