New data support the stratigraphic model based on rodent biozonation and 40Ar/39Ar-dating of basalts. The occurrence of the gelocids Paragelocus and Pseudogelocus and diverse bovids are first recor- ded from the Late Oligocene of Asia. Pseudogelocus mongolicus n. sp. is described. Zusammenfassung Aus dem Oligozän und Unter-Miozän der Mongolei wurden Ruminantia beschrieben, die 6 Familien und insgesamt 17 Gattungen angehören. Sie unterstützen das Stratigraphie-Konzept das auf der Biozonierung nach Nagetieren und auf der 40Ar/39Ar-Datierung von Basalten beruht. Es gelang der erste Nachweis der Gelocidae Paragelocus und Pseudogelocus und einer Vielfalt von Boviden des Ober-Oligozäns in Asien. Pseudogelocus mongolicus n. sp. wird neu beschrieben. The American Museum collection of Horses -from the Eocene to the Pleistocene inielusive - now numbers several thousand specimens, includ- ing nearly fifty types and about as many casts of types. It is desired gradually, as opportunity permits, to make this type collection absolutely complete either through originals or casts. The first step towards a thorough understanding of the Equidse is a systematic revision of all the generic and specific names which have been proposed, and of the characters of the valid genera and species, starting with an exact study and comparison of the type specimens. As planned this is being done by co6peration of the writer, of Mr. Walter Granger of the American Museum staff, and especially of Mr. J. W. The upper canine is less flattened than in other Nimravidae.Maofelis cantonensis gen. and sp. nov. exemplifies the earliest stage of development of sabertooth specialization characteristic of Nimravidae. This taxon, together with other middle-late Eocene nimravid records in South Asia, suggests origin and initial diversification of Nimravidae in Asia. We propose that this group dispersed to North America in the late Eocene and to Europe in the early Oligocene. The subsequent Oligocene diversification of Nimravidae took place in North America and Europe, while in Asia this group declined in the Oligocene, likely because of the earlier development of open habitats on that continent. Nimravids are cat-like hypercarnivores that developed saber-tooth morphology early in the Cenozoic and were top predators in the late Eocene – late Oligocene mammal communities of the Northern Hemisphere1–3. -

Kelly and Paul C. Murphey ABSTRACT The Turtle Bluff Member (TBM) is the stratotype section for the earliest Uintan bio- chron, Ui1a, of the middle Eocene Uintan North American Land Mammal age. For more than a century, the TBM had yielded only a few fragmentary specimens. As the result of many years of field work, numerous mammal fossils have now been recov- ered and provide an unprecedented opportunity to better define this poorly known interval. This is the first in a series of papers that provide detailed descriptions and tax- onomic revisions of the fauna of the TBM. Here we document the occurrence of the fol- lowing taxa in the TBM: Uintasorex parvulus; Microsyops annectans; Notharctus robustior; Omomys carteri; Trogolemur myodes; Washakius insignis; Thisbemys corru- gatus; Microparamys minutus; Microparamys sp.; Sciuravus nitidus; Tillomys senex; Tillomys? parvidens; Taxymys lucaris; Pauromys sp., cf. P. perdit us ; three informal sci- uravid species (sp. A, B and C); cf. Pareumys sp.; Metanoiamys sp.; and Elymys? emryi new species. Except for the previously described Hemiacodon engardae, all of the primates from the TBM are holdover taxa from the earlier Bridgerian Land Mammal age, whereas the rodents exhibit a modest diversification during the earliest Uintan. Elymys? emryi and four additional informal rodent species (Microparamys sp., sci- uravid sp. A, cf. Pareumys sp., and Metanoiamys sp.) make their appearances in the TBM and, as such, can be added to the list of index species characterizing biochron Ui1a. -

In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." Methods: Lithofacies Descriptions Facies descriptions follow methodology laid out in Miall (1985). Descriptions mostly follow those of Flight (2004) for the Bearpaw Shale and Fox Hills Sandstone. Additional lithofacies are described for the Colgate sandstone, ?Battle Formation, an undivided Hell Creek Formation, and the lowermost 5–10 m of the Fort Union Formation. It was desirable to stay as close to Flight's (2004) definitions as possible in order to facilitate cross comparison between measured sections and interpretation; however I have also chosen to remain true to the intentions of Brown (1906) in keeping the Basal Sandstone (and associated basal scour) as the first unit of the Hell Creek Formation, rather than the tidal flats identified by Flight (2004). This analysis is not as concerned with the nature of the basal contacts as much as internal stratigraphy within the Hell Creek Formation itself, hence some of the stratal and facies relationships described by Flight (2004) were not directly observed by myself, but I have included them here to ease comparisons. 1.1. Bearpaw Shale The Bearpaw Shale is the basalmost formation considered in this study; as such only the uppermost 10–20 m have been observed in outcrop. In this upper 20 m or so, the Bearpaw Shale generally coarsens upwards, predominantly comprising shale with occasional interbedded sandstone.
