Previous meetings • The teams are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition but were drawn together in the preliminary round of the 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup; Olympiacos withdrew due to political problems between Greece and Turkey, and Beşiktaş progressed to the first round (where they lost to Real Madrid). • The clubs have contested friendly games for the last two summers; Olympiacos won 2-1 in 2015, but Beşiktaş triumphed 1-0 in August 2016. • Olympiacos have played five matches against Turkish sides in UEFA competition with the record: W2 D1 L2 (W1 D1 in Greece – W1 L2 in Turkey). In the round of 32 against Osmanlıspor they prevailed 3-0 in Turkey after a goalless first-leg draw. • Beşiktaş drew both of their previous UEFA meetings with Greek sides; 1-1 at home and 2-2 away against Asteras Tripolis in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League group stage. • This is the second time the reigning champions of Greece and Turkey have met in UEFA competition, following Galatasaray's 1-0 home win against Olympiacos in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. Form guide • Olympiacos's last two European home games ended in draws: 1-1 then 0-0. • Beşiktaş have scored in 16 of their last 17 European fixtures – the exception a 6-0 loss at Dynamo Kyiv in their final group game in this season's UEFA Champions League. • Olympiacos have reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2011/12, having fallen at their first springtime hurdle in the last four seasons. They have never made it to the last eight in this competition but advanced to the quarter- finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992/93 and the UEFA Champions League in 1998/99. • The nearest Beşiktaş have come to lifting a major European honour was reaching the last eight of the UEFA Cup in 2002/03 and the European Cup quarter-finals in 1986/87. Links and trivia • The journey from Istanbul to Piraeus is around 670km. • Former team-mates: Marko Marin (Olympiacos) & Dusko Tošić (Beşiktaş) – Werder Bremen, 2009–10 Tarik Elyounoussi (Olympiacos) & Andreas Beck (Beşiktaş) – Hoffenheim, 2013–15 Esteban Cambiasso (Olympiacos) & Ricardo Quaresma (Beşiktaş) – Internazionale Milano, 2008–10. Aly Cissokho (Olympiacos) & Ricardo Quaresma (Beşiktaş) – Porto, 2015 • Olympiacos's Manuel da Costa (Sivasspor 2013–14), Óscar Cardozo (Trabzonspor 2014–16) and Marin (Trabzonsopor 2015–16) all have Turkish league experience. • Marin and Beck won the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship together with Germany. • Beşiktaş and Olympiacos are among four domestic champions in the round of 16 along with APOEL and København. The coaches • On Monday 6 March, Olympiacos parted company with Paulo Bento after six months in charge. Youth coach Vasilis Vouzas, 50, has stepped up on an interim basis, with Ariel Ibagaza and Tasos Pantos assisting him. The first leg against Beşiktaş will be his first match in charge. • Beşiktaş coach Şenol Güneş famously guided Turkey to third place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. A goalkeeper who spent the majority of his playing career at home-town club Trabzonspor, he led Beşiktaş to the 2015/16 Turkish title in his first season in charge. 3 Olympiacos FC - Beşiktaş JK Thursday 9 March 2017 - 21.05CET (22.05 local time) Match press kit Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, Piraeus Team facts Olympiacos FC Formed: 1925 Nickname: Erythrolefki (Red and Whites), Thrylos (Legend) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 43 (2016) Greek Cup: 27 (2015) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2014/15: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2013/14: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2012/13: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2011/12: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2010/11: third qualifying round 2009/10: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2008/09: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2007/08: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2006/07: UEFA Champions League group stage Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 6-1: Olympiacos v Besa 22/07/10, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round second leg 5-0 twice, most recently v Nordsjælland 02/10/08, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-5: Besa v Olympiacos 15/07/10, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Olympiacos v Hamburg 03/11/82, European Champion Clubs' Cup second round second leg • Heaviest away defeat 7-0: Juventus v Olympiacos 10/12/03, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 6-1: Olympiacos v Besa (see above) 5-0: Olympiacos v Nordsjælland (see above) • Biggest away win 0-5: Besa v Olympiacos (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-3: Olympiacos v St-Étienne 18/02/09, round of 32 first leg 1-3: Olympiacos v Newcastle 10/03/05, round of 16 first leg 1-3: Olympiacos v Juventus 25/11/99, third round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-1: Dinamo Zagreb v Olympiacos 28/09/77, first round second leg 4-0 twice, most recently v Newcastle 16/03/05, round of 16 second leg 4 Olympiacos FC - Beşiktaş JK Thursday 9 March 2017 - 21.05CET (22.05 local time) Match press kit Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, Piraeus Beşiktaş JK Formed: 1903 Nickname: Kara Kartal (The Black Eagles) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • none Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 14 (2016) Turkish Cup: 9 (2011) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless otherwise indicated) 2015/16: group stage 2014/15: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2013/14: play-offs (excluded from the group stage) 2012/13: did not participate in UEFA competition 2011/12: round of 16 2010/11: round of 32 2009/10: UEFA Champions League group stage 2008/09: first round 2007/08: UEFA Champions League group stage Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-1: Beşiktaş v Maccabi Tel-Aviv 15/09/11, UEFA Europa League group stage 5-1: Beşiktaş v Vaduz 25/08/05, UEFA Cup second qualifying round second leg 4-0: Beşiktaş v Široki Brijeg 28/08/08, UEFA Cup second qualifying round second leg • Biggest away win 0-5: Sarajevo v Beşiktaş 03/10/02, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-5: Beşiktaş v Dynamo Kyiv 14/03/87, European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals first leg • Heaviest away defeat 8-0: Liverpool v Beşiktaş 06/11/07, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 5-1: Beşiktaş v Maccabi Tel-Aviv (see above) 5-1: Beşiktaş v Vaduz (see above) 4-0: Beşiktaş JK v Široki Brijeg (see above) • Biggest away win 0-5: Sarajevo v Beşiktaş (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-4: Beşiktaş v Dynamo Kyiv 17/02/11, round of 32 first leg 0-3: Beşiktaş v Atlético Madrid 15/03/12, round of 16 second leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: Dynamo Kyiv v Beşiktaş 24/02/11, round of 32 second leg 5 Olympiacos FC - Beşiktaş JK Thursday 9 March 2017 - 21.05CET (22.05 local time) Match press kit Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, Piraeus Squad list Olympiacos FC Current season All-time UCL QUAL UEL League UEL UEFA No.
