Issue #72 Summer / Fall 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 2) A Man, a Colt The MGM Rolling Road Show Latest DVD Reviews WAI! #72 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS April and May were months that took a number of well known actors of the Spaghetti western genre: Jacques Berthier, Robert Hundar, John Phillip Law and Tano Cimarosa were all well known names in the genre. Of course we should expect as much since these people are now well into their 70s and even 80s. Still in our minds they are young vibrant actors who we see over and over again on video and DVD. It’s hard to realize that it’s been 40+ years since Sergio Leone kicked off the Spaghetti western craze and launched a world wide revolution in film that we still see influencing films today. Hard to believe Clint Eastwood turned 78 on May 30th. Seems like only yesterday he was the ‘Man with No Name’ and starring in the first of the Leone films that launched the genre. Remember when Clint was criticized so badly as an actor and for the films he appeared in during the 60s and 70s. Now he’s revered in Hollywood because he’s outlived his critics. I guess we recognized a real star long before the critics did. A great idea came to Tim League’s mind in the launching of the “Rolling Road Show”, where films are actually shown where they were filmed. I wasn’t able to travel to Spain to see the Dollars trilogy but we have a nice review of the films and the experience by someone who was there.

  • A Comparative Study of Women's Aggression
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WOMEN'S AGGRESSION Kiera M. Gaswint A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2018 Committee: Kim Coates, Advisor Jeff Brown © 2018 Kiera Gaswint All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Kim Coates, Advisor This project explores women’s aggression in superhero, science fiction, and crime film through a close reading of Wonder Woman, Ghost in the Shell, and Atomic Blonde. All based in genres that are traditionally considered ‘for boys,’ these films are different from other superhero, science fiction, and crime films because they feature female leads with aggressive tendencies. Using Dana Crowley Jack’s theory of women’s aggression and Yvonne Tasker and Diane Negra’s definition of postfeminism, I argue that Diana, Major, and Lorraine revolutionize the image of the lead postfeminist character by offering examples of women’s aggression that resist acceptable, palatable representations of women’s aggression. Whereas in the past there have been many representations of aggressive women, those past representations have been affected by postfeminism in a way that commodifies and limits their ability to be authentically aggressive. I examine how these new films – Wonder Woman, Ghost in the Shell, and Atomic Blonde - play into and ultimately resist postfeminist representations because of their aggression and how that aggression is played out on the female body. In the following chapters I analyze how the heroines in Wonder Woman, Ghost in the Shell, and Atomic Blonde disrupt postfeminist notions and prior images of women’s aggression by explicitly examining aggressive women who are not domesticated or justified by rape.

  • Danger: Diabolik - Anmeldelse Blogg

  • Camille Paglia
Homer on Film: A Voyage Through The Odyssey, Ulysses, Helen of Troy, and Contempt CAMILLE PAGLIA The Odyssey, adapted for television by Andrei Konchalovsky and Christopher Solimine. Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. Miniseries produced by American Zoetrope in association with Hallmark Entertainment for NBC (May 18 and 19, 1997). The may 1997 NBC television miniseries of The Odyssey, a production of Francis Ford Coppola’s Amer- ican Zoetrope in association with Hallmark Entertainment, should give courage to the faint of heart in the culture wars. The canon lives! The Odyssey’s executive producer, Robert Halmi, Sr., 73, who worked in the Hungarian Resistance during World War II, is an author and photographer as well as producer of nearly two hundred feature films and television dramas, such as Svengali (1983), The Josephine Baker Story (1991), Lone- some Dove (1987), and Gulliver’s Travels (1996). The pop- ular and critical success of Gulliver’s Travels—the miniseries drew over thirty million viewers nightly and won XX Emmys—led to NBC’s quick approval of Halmi’s proposal to do The Odyssey as a two-part, four-hour telecast. With evangelical fervor, Halmi has now devoted himself to bring- ing the classics to a mass audience: his productions of Dick- ens’ David Copperfield, Melville’s Moby Dick, Dos- toyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, and Dante’s Inferno are either nearing completion or in planning. Andrei Konchalovsky, the director of The Odyssey, was born in Russia and was trained as a classical pianist and then as a filmmaker. Lured to Hollywood after his epic, Siberiade, arion 5.2 fall 1997 112 homer on film won the Special Jury Prize at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, he has directed a variety of middling films, of which the best known is Runaway Train (1985).
