GRAHAM COBB is a North Bay native who demonstrated athletic ability in a number of sports including gymnastics, kayaking, cross country running, track and field and cross country skiing – reaching OFSAA or Provincial level in all five disciplines. Kayaking was his eventual sport of choice and he reached the highest level of proficiency - competing as a member of the Canadian National team from 1995 to 2001 in International events in Europe, South America, the United States and Canada. He was part of the Canadian K-4 crew that placed 4th in the Pan Am Games 1000m race in 1994 and took part in World Cup events in Denmark and Germany as well as World Championships in Canada and Hungary-reaching K-4 semi finals at Worlds 4 times at three different distances. Competing at the Canadian National Canoeing Championships from 1991 through 2000 he won 33 medals, including 14 gold, in Juvenile, Junior and Senior races in K-1, K-2 and K-4 over distances ranging mainly from 200 to 1000 metres. As a Senior competitor he captured 7 gold (5 in K-4), 8 silver and 4 bronze medals. In Ontario Championship regattas he gained 26 medals, including 8 gold and 7 silver, in eight years. He was a member of the Canadian Junior K Team in 1993. He was just ten when he started gymnastics; in 1991 he won the Provincial All-Round Argo B title and reached Nationals in 1992. As a cross country runner he placed in the top 25 at OFSAA on three occasions (11th in ’93) and his Widdifield teams finished in the top ten four times. He also ran for Dalhousie’s AUAA Championship squad. As a cross country skier he was on OFSAA Team and Relay Champions while placing 5th individually in 1992. Representing Widdifeld in track, he reached the OFSAA 3000m final in 1991. In 1999 he was in the crew of a Canadian team that won an International Dragon Boat race in China and competing in Adventure Racing (a wilderness multi sport competition) he picked up 2 1sts and 2 3rds in 3 seasons. He became a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 2003 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2010.

JOHN CORDTS was born in Sweden and as the son of a farm equipment salesman had become skilled at repairing motorized equipment by the time he moved to North Bay at the age of 18 in 1954. In 1956 he purchased an MGA and began ice racing on Lake Nipissing and the following year started a two decade career of racing cars on tracks all over the continent. In 2004 he was named to the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in the Closed Wheel, Open Wheel and Snowmobile Category. The first few years of his illustrious career he drove mostly MGA’s and Austin Healeys, winning a number of events with a pushrod MG which outraced twin cam vehicles. Over the next seven years Cordts won over 100 trophies and firmly established himself as a top driver. In 1965 he moved up in class - his Gorrie’s Chevrolet Corvette won the Canadian title for big bore sports cars and Cordts was named driver of the year. After losing most of a season due to a serious accident he resumed his career driving McLarens and began competing on U.S. tracks on a regular basis. As one of a few Canadian professional drivers he finished third in the U.S. Road Racing Championship for Can- Am cars over 2 litres in 1967, winning a pair of races. The next year he carded a pair of 3rds, a 4th and 2 5ths and in 1969 was 10th overall in the Can-Am Challenge Cup, mainly driving dated McLarens. He drove McLaren Chevrolets from ’69 until his retirement in 1974. Over the years he competed on the top tracks in Canada and the States, setting a number of records while competing for various teams in both countries – Billes, McCaig, Gorries, Young American Racing, U.S. Racing and Paul Newman Lola among others. He thrilled fans at such tracks as Green Acres, Harewood,Mosport, St Jovite, Riverside, Watkins Glen, Sebring and Elkhart. A quiet, unassuming individual he had his share of accidents over the years and walked away from more than one wreck. He loved racing – driving for Ski Do Ontario on the snowmachine racing circuit in the late 1960’s and at the age of 60 began racing motorcycles in British Columbia. After winning five moto-cross events he was seriously injured in an accident and retired to a quiet life of wood carving and contemplation.

JACK DOMINICO comes from a well known North Bay family who played minor ball and hockey here before leaving town to pursue a career in the newspaper field . He learned his trade in Sault Ste Marie, Gravenhurst and Etobicoke before starting his own marketing firm in Toronto in 1969 and acquiring the Ontario Hockey League as a key client. He prepared their yearbooks, catalogues and various publications for more than 30 years. He still does some work with the Ontario Hockey Association and the Toronto Sun chain. Toronto was a key member of the Triple A International Baseball League for many decades and when the club was moved to Louisville Kentucky it left the city without top flight ball. The Intercounty League, a top grade semi pro loop founded in 1919 , placed a franchise in Toronto to fill the gap. Dominico purchased the club in 1969 and has run the team ever since, almost 45 years – looking after the myriad of tasks necessary to keep such a franchise afloat. Dominico’s Leafs have won 20 Intercounty pennants and eight championships while playing their home games (with no admission charge) at Christie Pits. The familiar blue and white maple leaf crest with a centre “T” is the oldest sports team logo in Toronto, pre-dating the NHL Leafs original crest. The lineup over the years has included some former Blue Jays and North Bay’s Damon Topolie caught for the club for several seasons. In 1987 Dominico created a charity baseball celebrity dinner which brings old time baseball stars to Toronto to share stories and experiences with todays fans. Over the years the gala has featured the likes of Warren Spahn, Bob Gibson, Bob Lemon, Bob Feller, Orlando Cepeda, Curt Flood, Robin Roberts, Maury Wills, Country Slaughter, George Kell and Canadian Ferguson Jenkins, among others. The 27th edition of the dinner, which helps keep the Intercounty Leafs alive, will be coming up shortly . Dominico was inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 along with Frank Orr, Red Kelly and Frank Selke Jr. In 2010 the main diamond at Christie Pits was named in honour of Jack and his late wife Lynne who worked with him with the team and at the ballpark every step of the way.

CHANTAL NADON (MCNAMARA) was born in North Bay and was only 15 when she began to learn martial art skills at the Twin Dragon Centre in the city. In 1992 she began a two year amateur boxing career that saw her win 6 of 8 matches and win the Ontario Womens’s Amateur Bantamweight Championship in 1994. Later that same year she became a professional kickboxer and over the next eight plus years became known as the “North Bay Assassin” on her way to wins in five World Championship bouts –three flyweight plus one super fly and one featherweight. She initially won the International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA) World Flyweight title over England’s Mary Hart in May 2001 at Memorial Gardens in North Bay. She defended that belt later that year and again in 2002. She won her first World Championship bout in September of 1998 in the Featherweight division. Two years later she won the ISKA World Super Flyweight belt against a Spanish opponent. During her career she won 15 of 20 matches, fought to a pair of draws and lost only three times. Of her 20 bouts, nine of them were championship matches and she won eight of those while being trained by Michael and Martin McNamara of the Twin Dragon Club. Nadon won two FFKA Canadian Featherweight Championship matches (1997 & ’98) and took part in a pair of North American Championship bouts-winning the ISKA Super Bantamweight Freestyle in October 1998 and losing a Featherweight final five months later. She retired from the ring in 2003 holding several belts including the ISKA World Super Flyweight and the ISKA World Flyweight (above the waist). 1998 winner of the DIA Sports Achievement award, Algonquin grad Chantal spent a decade teaching women self defence classes and children karate and kickboxing here in North Bay and did the same in later years in Toronto and Aurora. Married to Michael McNamara and the mother of two daughters, Brigitte and Renee, she has recently again taken up residence in North Bay.

MIKE O’SHEA was born in North Bay in 1970 and just 13 years later started playing the sport that would ultimately see him elevated to among the very best to ever play CFL football. Introduced to the game at Widdifield SS he started out as a quarterback and then played end for three seasons before coach Rodger Ettles converted him to middle linebacker in his final year of high school football and the rest, as they say, is history. From 1989 through 1992 he played university ball with , helping them to the OUAA title in ’92 and being named a Canadian University (and OUAA) All Star as well as OUAA Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded 86 tackles and 21 QB sacks in his Gryphon years and played in the East-West Shrine Game in California in 1992. Taken in the first round of the 1993 CFL draft (4th overall) by the Edmonton Eskimos he was traded to Hamilton where he played his first three years of a stellar 16 year career. 12 of the next 13 seasons were played in Toronto Argo double blue as they won a trio of Grey Cups- in 1996,1997 and 2004. In 1996 he decided to try the NFL and after being one of the Detroit Lions final cuts he returned to the CFL where he joined the Argos. He was with them for every season after that except for 2000 which he spent with the Ti Cats . He played his last game in 2008. O’Shea was named a CFL All Star in 1999, the same year he was named Outstanding Canadian in the League. In 1993 he was named Rookie of the Year. He was a CFL East All Star on five occasions – 1994,’95,’97,’99,’00 and finished his career with an amazing 1151 tackles – 2nd on the all time tackles list. In 2006 he became the first Canadian and only the third player in CFL history to record 1000 tackles. Eight times during his career he recorded 75 tackles or more in a season and for the Argos he made a total of 822 (4 a game) in 205 games. In 2007 he was named to the All Time Argos Team, as a Middle Linebacker. He played 271 regular season games in the CFL, the most ever by a defensive player . A three time winner of the North Bay Sports Achievement award, O’Shea joined the Argos coaching staff as Special Teams Coordinator in 2010 and in 2012 won his 4th Grey Cup – his first as a coach. NORTH BAY SPORTS HALL OF FAME Dear Friends: 2012 was certainly a big year – our 35th anniversary, a completely redesigned plaque system, a newly refurbished Hall of Fame Room and the publication of our book – ‘They Were Our Heroes’. With the coming of the OHL Battalion and the 12 million dollar upgrading of the Gardens here in 2013 that means more changes for your NBSHF. The plan is that we will be part of a large planned concourse on the north end of the building so stay tuned to see how it all shakes out !

Thank you for your support over the years and for attending our celebration of the best in North Bay sports. Enjoy your evening.
