Kayaking was his eventual sport of choice and he reached the highest level of proficiency - competing as a member of the Canadian National team from 1995 to 2001 in International events in Europe, South America, the United States and Canada. He was part of the Canadian K-4 crew that placed 4th in the Pan Am Games 1000m race in 1994 and took part in World Cup events in Denmark and Germany as well as World Championships in Canada and Hungary-reaching K-4 semi finals at Worlds 4 times at three different distances. Competing at the Canadian National Canoeing Championships from 1991 through 2000 he won 33 medals, including 14 gold, in Juvenile, Junior and Senior races in K-1, K-2 and K-4 over distances ranging mainly from 200 to 1000 metres. As a Senior competitor he captured 7 gold (5 in K-4), 8 silver and 4 bronze medals. In Ontario Championship regattas he gained 26 medals, including 8 gold and 7 silver, in eight years. He was a member of the Canadian Junior K Team in 1993. He was just ten when he started gymnastics; in 1991 he won the Provincial All-Round Argo B title and reached Nationals in 1992. As a cross country runner he placed in the top 25 at OFSAA on three occasions (11th in ’93) and his Widdifield teams finished in the top ten four times. He also ran for Dalhousie’s AUAA Championship squad. As a cross country skier he was on OFSAA Team and Relay Champions while placing 5th individually in 1992. Representing Widdifeld in track, he reached the OFSAA 3000m final in 1991. In 1999 he was in the crew of a Canadian team that won an International Dragon Boat race in China and competing in Adventure Racing (a wilderness multi sport competition) he picked up 2 1sts and 2 3rds in 3 seasons. He became a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 2003 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2010. JOHN CORDTS was born in Sweden and as the son of a farm equipment salesman had become skilled at repairing motorized equipment by the time he moved to North Bay at the age of 18 in 1954. In 1956 he purchased an MGA and began ice racing on Lake Nipissing and the following year started a two decade career of racing cars on tracks all over the continent. In 2004 he was named to the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in the Closed Wheel, Open Wheel and Snowmobile Category. The first few years of his illustrious career he drove mostly MGA’s and Austin Healeys, winning a number of events with a pushrod MG which outraced twin cam vehicles. Over the next seven years Cordts won over 100 trophies and firmly established himself as a top driver. In 1965 he moved up in class - his Gorrie’s Chevrolet Corvette won the Canadian title for big bore sports cars and Cordts was named driver of the year.
