ECAS 2nd Quarter NEWSLETTER July-Sept 2018 ATHLETES TO BENEFIT FROM ECAS VEHICLES HAND- OVER CEREMONY.

ECAS held a vehicle handing-over ceremony at the Nelson Mandela University HP Complex on Wednesday 26 September 2018. The purpose of the event was to hand-over 2 x 8 seater mini buses to the ECAS offices of Nelson Mandela Metro and Buffalo City Metro district Academies. The vehicles are designated to be used by district ECAS officials to ben- efit ECAS programs and ECAS HP athletes. Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi District Academies received similar vehi- cles during the previous financial year. The event was attended by numerous dignitaries including HMS staff, ECAS Commission members, Department of Sport, Recreation Arts and Culture Senior HO and District officials, Sport Confederation representatives and ECAS staff and athletes. Speakers at the handing-over ceremony emphasized the importance of collaborations such as the ECAS and HMS partnership and the resultant benefits for both parties. The MC, Mr Makubalo encouraged athletes to aspire to greatness and to make use of the opportunities provided by the Department and the ECAS system. He acknowl- edged the presence of world boxing superstar Zolani Tete at the event, and encouraged athletes to be inspired by his success and to make the EC proud by achieving to the best of their potential. The saying goes that “Competition drives sport”. For athletes to be at their best at competitions, athletes need to get to practice and gym sessions and then to competitions. ECAS believes that the newly acquired mini buses will serve the HP objectives of ECAS in the longer term 2

THOMAS FARQUHAR THE STAR AT THE 2018 SA COASTAL WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPS

Thomas Farquhar emerged as the star at SA Coastal Weightlifting Champs that was held at Mossel bay on the weekend of 22 September 2018.

Thomas set 3 SA records at the Mosselbay (EDEN) event. He set a snatch new benchmark at 140 kg, the clean and jerk at a massive 173 Kg and he also claimed the total record with both lifts adding to 313 Kg. Both the clean and jerk and total records were previously held by Jean Greeff.

Thomas will now turn his attention to the 2018 IWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS that will take place in ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN from 31 October – 10 November 2018.

Thomas is excited about his latest achievements and has set his longer-term goal to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games to be hosted in Japan.

ALARIC BASSON, ALARD BASSON AND JADE SIMONS MEDAL AT THE AFRICA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ALGERIA

ECAS athletes, Alard Basson, Alaric Basson and Jade Simons excelled at the African Swimming Championships in Algeria. The event took take place in Algeria (city of Algiers) from 10 to 16 September 2018.

The official name of the event is the 13th CANA Swimming and Open Water Championships.

ALARIC BASSON was the most successful swimmer, claiming 6 medals (3 x silver and 3 x bronze). Silver in the 100m breaststroke (new NMB Aquatics domestic and all- comers record of 28.37sec) Silver in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay Silver in 4 x 100m medley relay. Bronze in 200m breaststroke Bronze in 4 x 200m freestyle Bronze in 50m breaststroke (claimed NMB Aquatics domestic record of 1 min 54sec).

ALARD BASSON claimed bronze in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay. He claimed a 2nd bronze in the 4 x 100m medley relay.

JADE SIMONS (17-year-old from Collegiate High School) claimed 2 bronze medals. Bronze in 100m breaststroke (personal best time of 1:12:17) Bronze in 50m breaststroke.

Jade is a National Ministerial sport bursary holder. 3

ISCHKE SENEKAL STARS AT AFRICAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS , IAAF CONTINENTAL CUP AND ATHLETICS

ECAS athlete ISCHKE Senekal (25), from Uitenhage, continued to show she can perform at the highest level when she won the shot-put gold medal at the African Athletics Championships.

The 21st African Championships in Athletics was held in Asaba, Nigeria from 1 to 5 August 2018 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

Senekal secured the Gold medal with her winning distance throw of 17.24 meters. Ischke also secured a bronze medal in the discuss event with a final throw of 53.82m.

Her performances in Nigeria qualified her for the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup. Senekal competed in the Shot-Put and Discuss events at the IAAF Continental Cup and finished in 5th and 8th place respectively. The 2018 IAAF Continental Cup is an international sporting event that was held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on 8–9 September 2018.

She also competed at the 2018 Athletics World Cup that was held in , United Kingdom, from 14 to 15 July 2018. Ischke achieved a 4th position in the Shot-Put and 7th in the Discuss event. Senekal is coached by Kobus van Zyl. LUXOLO ADAMS WINS SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS AT ATHLETICS WORLD CUP IN LONDON

ECAS Sprinter, Luxolo Adams participated in the inaugural Athletics World Cup where he won a silver medal in the Men's 200m race event in a time of 20.45s. from China won the race in 20.25s securing the gold medal. from United States of America finished in 3rd place winning the bronze medal.

Luxolo was also part of the SA relay team who won the bronze medal in the 4 x 100m relay race. The team comprised of the following sprinters: Antonia Alkana, Simon Magakwe, Roscoe Engel and Luxolo Adams.

The ATHLETICS WORLD CUP saw eight of the world’s top athletics nations competing in London this including; USA, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Poland, China, Germany, France, Jamaica and South Africa .Each team entered one athlete per event, and points were gained on the basis of finishing position

South Africa finished in 5th place from 8 nations on the official medal standings with a total of 9 medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals). Luxolo is a member of the Nelson Mandela University Athletics club and is coached by Gerrie Posthumus. Adams hails from Burgersdorp, in the Joe Gqabi District. Loxolo was the winner of the Newcomer of the Year Award at the recent 2018 EC S&R Achievers Awards held at the Boardwalk in PE on 24 August 2018. 4

AMATOLE AND BCM DISTRICT ACADEMIES HOSTS SUCCESSFUL TRAINING CAMPS

Amathole and BCM district academy hosted a successful Middle-Distance training camp in Elliotdale from 19-23 September 2018. The camp was held for athlete of the Elliotdale middle-distance athletics hub.

Athletes that took part in the camp were: Nosive Kekelana, Vuyiswa Mofi, Aviwe Hoboloshe, Siyamthanda Zamani, A. Lamani and S. Zamani.

The training camp was hosted to prepare athletes for the National Cross-Country Championships which was held in Bloemfontein on 29 September 2018.

Training was done under the guidance of expert Middle Distance Coach, Mr. Zolile Makhwayiba. The camp also served as an opportunity for the athletes to be monitored and evaluated on their current performances and fitness level.

JOE GQABI DISTRICT COACHES AND ATHLETES BENEFITED FROM COACHES EDUCATION WORKSHOP AND TESTING SESSIONS. A 3-day coaches’ education session that included scientific testing, was held at Burgersdorp and Maclear from 19-21 September 2018.

Thirty-two (32) Joe Gqabi District Coaches (Sprinting, Middle- Distance and Netball) and thirty-nine (39) athletes attended the sessions.

The education sessions was held in conjunction to scientific testing for sprinters, middle distance and netball athletes.

The purpose of the workshop was to expose the mostly rural coaches and athletes to advance scientific training methods and to capacitate coaches.

ECAS Sport Scientist, Mr Jason le Roux facilitated the workshop. Workshop topics included sessions on coaches leadership, strength & conditioning principles and testing protocols.

Mr Godfrey Leeu, the Joe Gqabi District Coordinator expressed his appreciation for the workshop indicating that the athletes, coaches from the schools, athletics clubs and hub coaches benefitted much form the interactions.

TRAINING CAMP FOR MIDDLEBURG LADIES RUGBY TEAM

ECAS (Chris Hani District Academy) hosted a successful training camp for 28 female rugby players.

The camp took place from 28-29 September 2018 at Midros Township in Middleburg. Players attending the camp were members of the Middleburg Ladies Rugby team. The team is called the Stormers.

Training was done under the guidance of Mr. Mr Lefty Xolisile Dakuse (World Rugby Level 3 Coach). Components covered at the camp included: Field sessions, Video analysis, Life Skills Training, Physical and Psychological aspects of the game.

The purpose of the camp was to prepare the athletes for the upcoming Genieva Scholtz Women Rugby Tournament in Middleburg.

The tournament is named after Geneva Scholtz who died on the rugby filed at the age of 23 years.

CINDY SCHWULST DEFENDS MANDELA TRIATHLON TITLE

The 2018 Mandela Day Triathlon and Duathlon event took place on Saturday 25 August 2018 in Midmar Dam located near Howick and Pietermaritzburg.

Cindy Schwulst crossed the finish line in 1st position, repeating her 2017 achievement as champion of the Mandela Day Triathlon event.

During the race, Scwhulst had to contend with former Junior SA Tri Champions Jodie Berry and Maude-Elaine le Roux as the trio battled it out for the ladies’ podium places.

Schwulst won the race in a fast time of 02:06:34 with Berry and Le Roux rounding out the final podium spots with second and third places respectively. See picture featuring the top 3 athletes. (From left: Maude-Elaine le Roux , Cindy Schwulst, and Jodie Berry)

21st EC SPORT AND RECREATION ACHIEVERS AWARDS A GREAT SUCCESS

The 21st EC Sport and Recreation Achievers Awards Function was held at the Boardwalk Hotel in Port Elizabeth on Friday 24 August 2018.

The event was hosted by The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Province of the Eastern Cape, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sport Confederation.

The awards recognized and honoured individuals, codes and teams that have excelled both on and off the field for the period 1st JUNE 2017 to 30 JUNE 2018. The Awards function was attended by 550 guests. A total of 85 persons were awarded across 25 Categories.

The awards included MEC awards, indigenous awards, team, individual, administration, officiating etc awards. Speakers included: Athol Trolip (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor), Mkhuli Magada (EC Sports Confederation President), Hon Mr. P Masualle (Eastern Cape Premier), Bulelwa Tunyiswa (MEC Sport, Recreation Arts and Culture) etc. Below is a list of winners for the main 5 Award Categories:
