Eidinger Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering Monograph No. 19 April, 2001 Abstract The January 26 2001 Gujarat Earthquake (Mw = 7.7) severely struck the Kutch District of the Gujarat State, India. The earthquake occurred on a blind thrust fault in western India, about 150 km northwest of the city of Ahmedabad. The earthquake resulted in about 17,000 fatalities, 150,000 injuries and left more than 500,000 homeless in the stricken areas. The heaviest damaged lifelines were water and electric power. Other lifelines were substantially impacted, including communications, wastewater, ports, railways, highways, roads and bridges. The speed of recovery of the water and electric power systems was substantially slowed due to widespread heavy damage to pump station and substation control buildings. HAUSLER, Ph.D.1 SUMMARY The January 26, 2001 Bhuj earthquake in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, India caused over 13,000 deaths and resulted in widespread destruction of housing stock throughout the epicentral region and the state. Over 1 million houses were either destroyed or required significant repair. Comprehensive, unprecedented and well-funded reconstruction and retrofitting programs soon followed. Earthquake-resistant features were required in the superstructure of new, permanent housing by the government and funding agencies. This paper describes those features and their implementation in both traditional (e.g., stone in mud or cement mortar) and appropriate (e.g., cement stabilized rammed earth) building technologies. Component-specific and overall costs are given. Relatively less attention has been paid to foundation design, however, typical foundation types will be described. Retrofitting recommendations and approaches are documented. Construction could be driven by homeowners themselves, by nongovernmental or donor organizations, or by the government or industry on a contractor basis. The approaches are contrasted in terms of inclusion and quality of requisite earthquake-resistant design elements, quality of construction and materials, and satisfaction of the homeowner. The rebuilding and retrofitting efforts required a massive mobilization of engineers, architects and masons from local areas as well as other parts of India. Cement companies, academics, engineering consulting firms, and nongovernmental organizations developed and held training programs reaching over 27,000 masons and nearly 8,000 engineers and architects.

It is a mingle point of ocean and inland transport. A harbor is the essential transit point for the volume of the trade, permitting the imports of goods, which were not in a sufficient amount and the export of items which the country has an excess or has a competitive edge to produce contributing to the progress of its economy. The effectiveness of a port is important in international trade since a seaport is the nerve of foreign trade of a country. Surat is an ancient city and port by all evidence and had been through centuries a centre of maritime trade. The city was very populous and full of merchants. The city had a very considerable number of foreign settlers. Apart from the Europeans, there were Turks, Jews, Arabians, Persians and Armenians. Surat was a great port and commercial centre. The 17th century was an era of the prosperity for the city of Surat. The two great sources that contributed to the wealth and prosperity of the city were foreign commerce and domestic manufactures. Surat was a commercial emporium, besides such commodities as indigo, spices and cloths, many important goods imported from Europe were sold in its markets.
