Reminder - All luncheons take place at Hits at the Park inside Harbor Park, unless otherwise noted. Lunch is served at 11:45 am and is $20 for members, and $25 for guests. You MUST RSVP to attend, by calling the NSC office at 757-497-9583. Letter from NSC President, Joe Monaco What a great month! Our luncheon speakers in February were great. Former ODU quarterback Thomas DeMarco was brilliant. Filling us in on his life as a professional quarterback in the Canadian Football League was fascinating. I, for one, didn’t know they played with 12-players on a side and how hard that is to adjust to as a quarterback. You spend your entire life learning to know where all eleven defensive players are at any time. Then all of a sudden you need to adjust to a faster game in the professional ranks and must deal with an extra player to watch out for. Thomas conveyed that overwhelming feeling to us. Then to hear his story of beginning as the high school JV quarterback, landing a scholarship to be the ODU starting quarterback, then on to becoming a professional quarterback, had us entertained and glued to our seats. Of course the highlight of February had to be our Jamboree. The head table was filled with champions in every direction. We had former Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer talk about his career. Can you believe it? This is the 2nd winningest coach in Division I history, took his teams to an NCAA record 23 straight bowl games, is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, is on the committee to choose the four NCAA football playoff teams, and he wasn’t even our keynote speaker! JMU coach Mike Houston was also there. Not only has he taken JMU to the championship game in BOTH of his seasons as the Duke’s head coach, but he also had previously taken Ryne-Lenoir University to the Division II championship game as their head coach. Amazing! Then we had another national champion coach speak, Brandon Elliott. He led the Virginia-Wesleyan women’s softball team to the NCAA champion- ship. We also had former Virginia Tech Linebacker, Tremaine Edmunds in attendance. Tremaine is expected to be a first round draft pick this year. And last, but certainly not least, our own Paul Webb, the second winningest college basketball coach in Virginia, was there to receive the well-deserved, Lifetime Achievement Award. Our keynote speaker was Herman Edwards, the former NFL player and coach, ESPN football analyst and current head coach of Arizona State University. And Herm didn’t disappoint. He was funny, motivational and interesting. I got to spend quite a bit of time with Herm while he was in town and as wonderful a person as he seems on TV, I can tell you, he is a nicer person in real life. Capping off the evening, we received applications for 26 new members. Let’s all be sure to welcome them with open arms (and if possible invite them to our tables) when they come. Thank you again for electing me as your president. As great as the responsibility is, the enjoyment I get from knowing each of you makes it all worthwhile!
