This collection comprises photographs of buildings and scenes in DuPont Company explosives manufacturing plants along the Brandywine Creek near Wilmington, Delaware, including the Eleutherian Mills (or Upper) yard, the Upper Hagley yard, and the Lower Hagley yard. ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note John W. Macklem (1867-1948) began working for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company as an errand boy at a young age and remained with the company his entire career. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) the company began with the production of gunpowder. Three of the photographs in this collection were taken by Pierre A. Gentieu (1842-1930), a long-term employee of the DuPont Company who took extensive photographs of the company's Brandywine Works at the turn of the twentieth century. - Page 3- John W. Macklem collection of DuPont Company powder yards photographs 1968.010 ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Content The photographs depict buildings and scenes in DuPont Company explosives manufacturing plants along the Brandywine Creek near Wilmington, Delaware, including the Eleutherian Mills (or Upper) yard, the Upper Hagley yard, and the Lower Hagley yard. Most pictures were taken after the yards ceased operation in 1921 and the buildings were abandoned. The collection also includes views of private residences near the yards, workers housing, a press house being demolished, Breck's Mill, and Henry Clay Village. Three albumen photographs taken by Pierre Gentieu in 1889 depict the aftermath of an explosion.     Restoration of American Shad to the Brandywine River Draft Dec 2015 University of Delaware Water Resource Center Newark, Del. 0 Summary This letter report updates the 2005 American shad restoration along the Brandywine River report prepared by the Brandywine Conservancy. American shad {Alosa sapidisimmd) were once an abundant migratory fish found throughout East Coast rivers and streams of North America, including the Brandywine River in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Shad were an important part of Native American and early colonial diets, and later, were the basis of an important commercial fishery in larger rivers like the Susquehanna and Delaware. Spring runs of shad comprised a unique and dramatic natural phenomenon, now a lost part o f our cultural heritage. Shad restoration efforts are underway in numerous rivers and streams along the East Coast. A 1985 study titled A Review and Recommendations Relating to Fishways Within the Delaware Basin commissioned by the Delaware Basin Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative identified three tributaries historically used by shad for spawning which had “the greatest potential for restoration of the American shad.” These include the Lehigh, the Schuylkill, and the Brandywine Rivers. The following is a report on the current state of dams along the Brandywine River. Restoring shad to the Brandywine River has important economic, ecological, and cultural benefits for the Brandywine Valley region generally and the Wilmington area specifically. The following is a summary table on the 11 dams on the Brandywine River, a map highlighting the dams and relevant landmarks, a report detailing each dam, along with photographs of the dams in their current state during the fall of 2015.

    The first du Pont black powder was made in these powder yards in 1804 launching one of the longest standing and most innovative American enterprises since this country’s founding. Between the company’s founding in 1802 and 1840, the yards expanded twice to include three dams, upper and lower mill races, dozens of mill buildings, and over a mile of infrastructure, much of which can still be seen today. On your journey through the powder yards you will see historic stone structures that housed the powder manufacturing process, working nineteenth century machinery, water wheels and turbines powered by the river, line shafts that transferred energy, a sixteen-ton roll mill in operation, a stone quarry that supplied the building material of the yards, black powder explosion demonstrations, a coal-fired steam engine, and of course the beautiful Brandywine River. Be sure not to miss: • Demonstrations of the only operating black powder roll mill in the country • The site and debris of one of the largest accidental explosions in the history of the yards • The sixteen-foot high Birkenhead water wheel at the oldest mills in the Hagley yards • The silently running nineteenth-century machines in our machine shop • Black powder explosion demonstrations • And our newest addition—the restored 1890s Hercules Type A water turbine that now provides power to the machines in the Machine Shop Over the 120 years that the Du Pont powder yards were in operation on the Brandywine, thousands of workers from diverse backgrounds lived, worked, and died in communities that surrounded the yards. In many ways, life in these communities was very different from life in other industrial towns.

Preble Defense and Foreign Policy Studies, The Cato Institute, USA Abstract Politicians often claim that the closure of military facilities will do irreparable harm to local economies. Such predictions can be refuted by empirical data, and by studying actual cases of defence conversion in the United States. This paper considers the economic impact of the closure, and subsequent redevelopment efforts, of three facilities: Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas; DuPont’s Eleutherian Mills in Wilmington, Delaware; and the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. It is reasonable to infer from this research, when combined with aggregate empirical data, that defence conversion often generates greater economic activity than prevailed before the closures. Keywords: defence economics, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Eleutherian Mills, Hagley, DuPont. 1 Introduction Industry leaders and politicians regularly claim that the closure of military facilities will do irreparable harm to local economies. Such predictions of certain calamity can be refuted by empirical data, and by a careful study of actual cases of defence conversion. In general, there are clear societal and economic benefits associated with moving resources from the military to more productive industry sectors, and to civilian uses. We take such resource shifts for granted in the private sector, when changing consumer tastes and new technologies cause some businesses to fail while others thrive. But politics and parochialism often intrude when military needs change. Instead of imagining the jobs lost when military bases close, or when military manufacturers relocate or retool, this paper will present several cases of defence conversion in the United States from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.
