Material: Abstract: Lammot du Pont (1831-1884) was a chemist and inventor, he was the grandson of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, more commonly known as the DuPont Company. This collection contains photographs of Brandywine, Hagley area, and the family of Lammot du Pont and Mary Belin du Pont (1839-1913). ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note Lammot du Pont (1831-1884) was a chemist and inventor, he was the grandson of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, more commonly known as the DuPont Company. The DuPont Company was a chemical company which began with the production of gunpowder. Lammot du Pont invented B blasting powder, using Chilean sodium nitrate instead of the previously used potassium nitrate (saltpeter) from India. In 1879, he resigned from the DuPont Company and formed the Repauno Chemical Company to manufacture high explosives. Lammot du Pont married Mary Belin du Pont (1839-1913) in 1865. The couple had eleven children. The family moved from the Brandywine to Philadelphia and lived at 3500 Powelton Avenue. Lammot du Pont died in an explosion on March 29, 1884. In 1892, Mary Belin du Pont had a family home built called Saint Amour in Wilmington, Delaware. - Page 3- S. Hallock du Pont collection of du Pont family photographs 1975.280 S. Hallock du Pont (1901-1974) is the grandchild of Lammot du Pont and Mary Belin du Pont. Their sixth child, William Kemble du Pont (1874-1907) was his father and his mother was Ethel Fleet Hallock (1876-1951). The couple married in 1899 and had three children. ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Content This collection consists of seventy-three photographs, mostly related to the Brandywine Valley area and the du Pont family. The Brandywine Creek and the Hagley Powder Yards are pictured, as well as the DuPont Company Second Office, Christ Church, Goodstay, Eleutherian Mills, St. Amour, Upper Louviers, Lower Louviers, Nemours, Hagley House, and Lammot du Pont's Philadelphia home at 3500 Powelton Avenue. There is also an oversized photograph of the DuPont Company's powder wagon and a panorama of the Tower Hill School and Henry Clay Village area. Individual du Pont family members pictured include Lammot du Pont's aunt Emma Paulina du Pont (1827-1914), Mary Belin du Pont's nieces, Mary "May" Lammot Belin Robertson (1869-1949), and Alice Belin du Pont (1872-1944); and several of Lammot and Mary Belin du Pont's children: Louisa d'Andelot du Pont (1868-1926), Pierre Samuel du Pont (1870-1954), Sophie Madeleine (1871-1894), Henry Belin du Pont (1873-1902), William Kemble du Pont (1874-1907), Irenee du Pont (1876-1963), Mary Alletta Belin (1878-1938), Isabella Mathieu du Pont (1882-1946), Margaretta Lammot du Pont (1884-1973), and Lammot du Pont (1880-1952).
