In the 2003 nesting season, the carapacial scute variation of 1086 Chelonia mydas hatchlings (169 dead and 917 live) and 394 Caretta caretta hatchlings (74 dead and 320 live) from Alata beach in Mersin, Turkey, were examined within carapacial scute series and in carapacial scute pattern. Th e most frequent scute pattern observed for Ch. mydas hatchlings was 1 nuchal, 5 vertebrals, 1 pair of supracaudals, 4 pairs of costals, and 11 pairs of marginals. Th e pattern of 1 nuchal, 5 vertebrals, 1 pair of supracaudals, 5 pairs of costals, and 12 pairs of marginals was the most frequent pattern for loggerhead hatchlings. Using the Minitab 13.0 Z test for 2 proportions, the numbers of variations on the carapacial scutes of dead and live hatchlings of Ch. mydas and C. caretta were examined to see whether there was a relation between the rate of dead hatchlings and the number of variations on the carapacial scute. It was found that there was no relation between the changes in variation numbers and the mortality rates in Ch. mydas and C. caretta hatchlings. Mersin’deki Alata kumsalında, 2003 üreme sezonunda, 1086 Chelonia mydas, (169 ölü ve 917 canlı) ve 394 Caretta caretta, (74 ölü ve 320 canlı) yavrularının karapas kabuğundaki farklılaşma karapas plak serileri ve plak sıralanması bakımından incelenmiştir. Ch. mydas yavrularında en çok gözlemlenen kabuk serisi 1 nukal, 5 vertebral, 1 çift suprakaudal, 4 çift kostal ve 11 çift marginal şeklindedir. İribaş kaplumbağa için en çok tekrar eden kabuk serisi ise 1 nukal, 5 vertebral, 1 çift suprakaudal, 5 çift kostal ve 12 çift marginal şeklindedir. Minitab 13.0 ikili oran için Z testi kullanılarak, Ch. mydas ve C. caretta ölü ve canlı yavrularının karapas kabuklarındaki farklılaşma, ölü yavruların oranı ile karapas kabuğundaki plak farklılaşması arasında bir ilişki olup olmadığını görmek için incelenmiştir. Serdar GİRGİNER – Murat DURUKAN * ABSTRACT Prehistoric Paintings in the Akyapı Cave in Mersin / Gülnar The cave paintings in the Akyapı (AlaKapı) cave, near the town of Gülnar (Mersin) have been discovered in 2012 and they are regarded as unique for the Middle Taurus region. In these paintings which are excursively scattered on the cave walls, the same figure was presented several times. The human figures have their arms raised upwards with elbows knicked in an angle of 90º and with knees also knicked in the same angle as the arms. The figures have big phalloi (?). The fact that the standard figure in question was depicted several times and that there is no other subject in the cave walls indicate the importance of both the cave and the depicted character. Because of its huge phal- los, it is suggested that the figure in question is a sacred being, and that the cave was probably a sacred place. It is assumed that the cave paintings of Akyapı in the Middle Taurus region where the number of prehistoric researches are so scanty may be dated to Neolithic or Chalcolithic period. ÖZET Mersin ili Gülnar ilçesi sınırları içinde yer alan Akyapı (Ala Kapı) Mağarası’nda 2012 yılında keşfedilen kaya resimleri, Orta Toroslar bölgesinde karşılaşılan ilk örnek- ler olması nedeniyle son derece önem taşımaktadır. Mağaranın duvarlarına gelişi güzel serpiştirilmiş olan bu resimlerde, aynı figürün tekrar tekrar betimlenmiş olduğu görül- mektedir. Kollarını dirseklerinden doksan derecelik açıyla yukarıya doğru kaldırmış ve dizlerini yine doksan derece bükmüş olan bu insan tasvirleri aynı zamanda iri bir fallusa (?) sahiptir.

The delta is classified as a Wetland of International Importance according to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The amount of fertilizers used in this area was 7200 tons in 2006. These pollutants affect the surface and groundwater quality negatively. The intensively used fertilizers and pesticides contain not only N- and P compounds but also some heavy metals. The contents of all pollutants in surface waters were determined for four different seasons between 2006 and 2008 and with these data a Geographic Information System (GIS) has been constructed by using Map Info. From the photometric heavy metal analysis, it is inferred that the excess concentration of Fe, Ni, Mn, Mo and Cu at some locations is the cause of undesirable quality for drinking purposes. The source of excess concentration of various heavy metals is the agricultural activities and fertilizers. It is determined that in all periods between 2006 and 2008 the heavy metals and other pollutants in the fertilizers and pesticides transported easily to river water with irrigation return flow. The organic pollutants, including COD, BOD, NH3 and NO3 followed the sharply increasing trends from Silifke city to Mediterranean Sea.

Erdemli is the 6th largest district of the Mersin Province and is at the forefront with its large and deep history, rich cultural accumulation, unique natural beauties, springs, historical sites and important agricultural facilities. It is thought that there are many issues that need to be produced and evaluated about Erdemli, which continues to develop and grow, at present and in future. For this purpose, it was aimed to create an awareness of ideas and project proposals about Erdemli to be discussed in a scientific atmosphere and to share it with public. In addition to that, this symposium could be a platform in which business or research relations for future collaborations will be established. International Erdemli symposium has received quite high interests from academician sides. We had in total 350 presentations from different universities. The symposium was organized in Erdemli by Mersin University with collaboration of municipality of Erdemli for the first time and internationally and free of charge. We believe that the symposium will be beneficial to our city Mersin and our country Turkey. As organizing committee, we believe that we had a successful symposium. Brief description Mezitli was founded as a municipality in 1968, but it was just in 2008 that Mezitli's boundary enlarged to 40 neighbourhoods. Although during the past years it evolved very fast to be a modern urban area with housing as well as working places, schools, hospitals and modern infrastructures, still almost ¾ of the Mezitli area consists of mountains, plateaus and fields (with 8,126 ha agricultural land). The Mediterranean climate is appropriate for a broad variety of fruits and vegetables, especially citrus, grape, peach and olive products. The big growth in population, mainly due to migration from the east of Turkey, but also the influx of people from the neighbour countries like Syria (especially because of war) since 2010, has been a big and ongoing challenge for Mezitli. Therefore, the region has a high need for a social-cultural inclusivity approach as well as economic projects to ensure local peace and give the inhabitants a good living environment and future perspectives to almost 26,000 plus registered Syrians and to 194,014 Turkish citizens. Women are still one of the most vulnerable groups as in the society of Turkey, they are often very much dependent on their families and mostly on their male relatives or husbands.

National Symposium On The Aegean Islands, 2-3 July 2004, Gökçeada - Çanakkale OPENING SPEECH Ali KURUMAHMUT Prime Ministry of Navigation Counsellorship Marine Transportation General Manager The Aegean Sea lies between the Turkish and the Greek main lands, as well as between the Morea peninsular and the southwestern edges of the Anatolian coasts, with the extension of the islands of Çuha, Küçük Çuha, Girit, Kaşot, Kerpe and Rodos that constitute its outer natural boundaries. In terms of the geographical structure, the Aegean, a semi-closed sea, has geological and geo-morphological characteristics peculiar to itself: it has about 1800 islands, islets and rocks of various sorts, as well as a number of geographical formations, scattered al over the Sea. There is little wonder that all these characteristics make the Aegean Sea a special one. The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey has been complicated for a number of reasons: for instance, there are many islands in the Aegean that Turkey ceded to Greece through international treaties. And these islands lying in the natural extension of the Turkish mainland surround Anatolia from north to the south. But Athens makes claims of sovereignty over many islands, islets, and rocks though Ankara never ceded any of them to Greece officially. The most obvious and famous case would be the Kardak rocks crisis that erupted between Turkey and Greece at the beginning of 1996. These complications make the Aegean a sea that is of special importance among the seas of the world. It is possible to divide the Aegean Islands into five categories in terms of their geographical locations, geological and geo-morphological characteristics, the historical perspectives of the sovereign powers to which they belonged, the manner in which the sovereignty over them was determined through international treaties, as well as their importance for geo-political and strategic purposes.

As soon as the complaint was reported to the Mersin Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the case was inspected by the Directorate and finally, the municipality was fined about 180.000 Turkish Liras on the basis of Turkish Environmental Law. (No. 2872) The municipality was also obliged to rehabilitate the area. However, the Municipality refused to pay the fine and appealed to the administrative court. The National Court made its decision in January 2021 and it ruled to dismiss the appeal filed by the Municipality with the decision no K.2020/1054. In view of the bilateral interviews between the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks and the complainant Association, it was decided that the rehabilitation must be done within the scope of the principals determined by a group of experts, so as to mitigate further degradation on the beach due to the heavy machinery activities.
