A MANIFEST CYBORG: LAURIE ANDERSON AND TECHNOLOGY by Julie Goolsby Under the Direction of Mary Hocks ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to demonstrate that although Laurie Anderson’s performance works are technologically driven and often involve gender play, seemingly transgressing the gender binary, ultimately she reinscribes traditional gender norms. On the one hand, Anderson has been a pioneer in the use of electronic technology, which is significant considering she is a woman and electronics is a male-dominated arena; on the other hand, her ambiguously- gendered cyborg persona, which does often raise awareness about gender stereotypes, ultimately reinscribes traditional gender norms. Although I consider these issues as they pertain specifically to Anderson, the significance of this project lies in the broader picture. Are there limits to gender performativity? Is it possible to break traditional gender norms? Must gender norms constantly reinscribe themselves regardless of new technology? As gender norms are deeply rooted in society, they are difficult to escape, as Anderson’s work demonstrates.

Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLIII, Number 2 Spring 2014 “The Biggest Feminist in the World”: On Miley Cyrus, Feminism, and Intersectionality1 Alexandra Apolloni, UCLA On 14 November 2013 Miley Cyrus proclaimed her feminism to an unsuspecting world. “I feel like I’m one of the biggest feminists in the world because I tell women not to be scared of anything,” she said. “Girls are beau- tiful. Guys get to show their titties on the beach, why can’t we?”2 For a media-friendly soundbite, this quota- tion actually reveals a lot about a phenomenon that, for simplicity’s sake, I’m going to refer to as Miley feminism. Miley feminism is about fearless- ness: about being unafraid to make choices, to be yourself, to self-express. It’s about appropriating a masculine-coded kind of individual freedom: the freedom to not care, to show your titties on the beach, to party without con- sequences, to live the “can’t stop won’t stop” dream that Cyrus sang about in “We Can’t Stop,” the arresting pop anthem that was inescapable during the summer of 2013. This feminism is transgressive, up to a point: Miley imagines a kind of femininity that flagrantly rejects the rules of respect- ability and propriety that define normative notions of girlhood. Miley’s not the only one singing the song of this type of feminism: we could be talking about Ke$ha feminism—Ke$ha’s laissez-faire persona led Ann Powers to compare her to the screwball comediennes of yore—or draw a connection to Icona Pop and their brazen choruses proclaiming “I don’t care.”3 Cyrus’s performances, though, seem to have pushed buttons in ways that those of her peers haven’t.

Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLIII, Number 2 Spring 2014 Once Again, on the Music of Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman (for Massenet)” Lindsey Eckenroth, CUNY Graduate Center Back in 1991, Susan McClary argued that Laurie Anderson’s music deserves analytical attention.1 Aside from McClary’s own remarks on the subject, to which I will return below, her call to action remains unanswered. Typically, academic writing on Anderson’s performative electronic storytelling has not explicitly addressed musical characteristics. Instead, her pieces are generally viewed as postmodern performance, video, or multimedia art, and analyses have focused on (hyper)mediation, the technological fragmentation of the subject, politicized language games and multiplicities of textual meaning, Anderson’s androgynous/cyborg performance personæ, and the ability of her production to transgress institutionalized high/low cultural and genre boundaries.2 Jon McKenzie posits Anderson’s œuvre as an “idiosyncratic collection of words, sounds, gestures, and images downloaded from various social archives, especially that of the United States.”3 Noting that the reception and production of Anderson’s works move within and between the territories of popular culture and experimental art, McKenzie argues that Anderson’s mediated evocations of “everyday life and its electronic ghost” are able to “cut across three terrains of performance: cultural,

    Sirens/Cyborgs: Sound Technologies and the Musical Body Lucie Vágnerová Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Lucie Vágnerová All rights reserved ABSTRACT Sirens/Cyborgs: Sound Technologies and the Musical Body Lucie Vágnerová This dissertation investigates the political stakes of women’s work with sound technologies engaging the body since the 1970s by drawing on frameworks and methodologies from music history, sound studies, feminist theory, performance studies, critical theory, and the history of technology. Although the body has been one of the principal subjects of new musicology since the early 1990s, its role in electronic music is still frequently shortchanged. I argue that the way we hear electro-bodily music has been shaped by extra-musical, often male-controlled contexts. I offer a critique of the gendered and racialized foundations of terminology such as “extended,” “non-human,” and “dis/embodied,” which follows these repertories. In the work of American composers Joan La Barbara, Laurie Anderson, Wendy Carlos, Laetitia Sonami, and Pamela Z, I trace performative interventions in technoscientific paradigms of the late twentieth century. The voice is perceived as the locus of the musical body and has long been feminized in musical discourse. The first three chapters explore how this discourse is challenged by compositions featuring the processed, broadcast, and synthesized voices of women. I focus on how these works stretch the limits of traditional vocal epistemology and, in turn, engage the bodies of listeners. In the final chapter on musical performance with gesture control, I question the characterization of hand/arm gesture as a “natural” musical interface and return to the voice, now sampled and mapped onto movement.

    It’s becoming difficult to recall the United States music scene without a prominent contingent of women composers, now that Joan Tower, Meredith Monk, Shulamit Ran, Chen Yi, and Joan La Barbara, among others, appear with increasing regularity in classical music venues. But when the present anthology was released by Tom Buckner’s pioneering label, 1750 Arch LP, in Berkeley in 1977, nothing comparable was available. The original album title intentionally contained no reference to the gender of its participants. New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media was taken from a similarly named graduate degree program in the Music Department at Mills College in Oakland, from which many women (alongside many men) emerged as successful composers following their study of electronic music with Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Gnazzo, Robert Ashley, Maggi Payne, David Behrman, Paul de Marinis, and other supportive and innovative faculty. As producer of this collection, I brought to the project many years of interest in the fate of the careers of female composers, including elder stateswomen Germaine Tailleferre and Peggy Glanville-Hicks, two particular favorites. When I discovered the iconoclastic scores of Johanna Beyer languishing in obscurity at the American Music Center archive in 1965, her curiously truncated career pointed out the complications confronting women composers, who naturally wanted to be taken as seriously as their male counterparts. Thankfully, times are better now for women composers and opportunities somewhat more plentiful. It should be noted that 1750 Arch frequently limited its LPs to twenty-two minutes per side in order to obtain the highest-quality playing surface for its releases.

    ŚWIAT I SŁOWO WORLD AND WORD 34|1|2020 ISSN 1731-3317 doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2562720 Sławomir Konkol Akademia Techniczno-Humanistyczna [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0001-8880-2064 Talk (post)normal: conceptualisations of the future in Laurie Anderson’s work Over the course of her long career in multimedia art,1 Laurie Anderson has spent a lot of time dealing with various visions and conceptions of the future; one might be tempted to think that it is actually closer to her than the present. For over four decades, the future has been both a theme in- vestigated in her work and a reality materialised through her activity as an artist. In Anderson’s songs, installations, performances, books, films and other media, she has persistently remained an innovator, using cutting- edge tools to explore the possible future shapes of the ever-changing land- scape of late twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century America. She has been forecasting, but also embodying, new forms of existence imposed on us by the development of the Western civilisation. Anderson has been de- scribed as “the ideal future human living in perfect harmony with all sorts of electronically synchronized equipment,” someone who “eats silicon chips sprinkled over her shredded wheat for breakfast.”2 Admittedly, the persona she created in her performances seemed to feel at home in realities that many members of her audience were only beginning to envision.
