Benedict XVI may well have clarified that his function was to be a purely spiritual one, yet, his every action can have broad repercussions in the age of multi-media. Lately, he has broken the silence with a couple of statements which deserve our attention. Card. Sarah, who wrote a book not long ago, was nominated Prefect of liturgy by Pope Francis. In the afterword of this book, soon to be issued, the pope emeritus wrote something rather mellow, indicating that, with Cardinal Sarah, the liturgy was in good hands. Yet, these words are a scandal to the layman Andrea Grillo, prominent member of the unofficial commission set up to study if and how to create a Mass in which Catholics and Protestants can participate together (!?!). Here is his reaction to the Pope's statement: “If he not only speaks, but even praises a Prefect who has created continuous embarrassment to the Church and his successor, a perilous conflict opens up, which would require more prudent behavior and more responsible words. In future, norms which regulate the predecessor’s 'institutional death' in a clearer and more certain way should be envisaged and the full authority of the successor, in the case of resignations.” But, a rather more interesting piece of news was broken 10 days ago (July 15, 2017), in LifeSiteNews: Pope Benedict XVI sent a sobering message at the funeral of Cardinal Joachim Meisner today, saying he was moved at the dubia cardinal's ability to "live out of a deep conviction that the Lord does not abandon His Church, even when the boat has taken on so much water as to be on the verge of capsizing." Meisner had been one of the four retired Cardinals who wrote the dubia against Amoris Laetitia, which have received no clear Papal answer. On the eve of his death, Card. Müller had phoned him and told him of his own sudden removal from the Congregation of the Faith, and this too greatly affected the aged man. Yet, certainly, the most staggering statement comes from the third German prelate, the pope emeritus, who certainly has had for a long time a clear, if sober, understanding of the Church situation. Just think of the Ratzinger report written in the mid-80's and his attempt to put the brakes on the liturgical nonsense in the aftermath of Vatican II. It is not that we wish to exonerate one of the last living periti of his responsibility in the post-Vatican disasters. But we deem it right to greet his objective diagnostic, praying that God will inspire the authorities to quickly apply the proper remedy, the defense of Tradition starting from the head by the promotion of a sturdy clergy. God dwells in this Church. Modest and appropriate attire at Mass is a sign of respect for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and of fraternal charity toward our neighbor. Please observe the following rules for clothing: • Women and girls must have their heads covered. • Women and girls must wear dresses or skirts that cover the knees. Abstain from sleeveless tops, revealing or tight-fitting clothing. • Suggested dress for men: coat and tie, shirttail tucked in. .

There is the particularly tragic memory of Bishop Ernest Coba of Albania, murdered by prison authorities for celebrating a Mass with a few other inmates in his cell in contravention of prison regulations on Easter Day, 1979. In Czechoslovakia in 1988 there is the case of Augustin Navratil, a Catholic layman and father of nine, who has been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric clinic for responding to newspaper criticisms of his widely supported 31-point petition for religious rights.

  • Full Text and Explanatory Notes of Cardinals' Questions on 'Amoris Laetitia'
Full Text and Explanatory Notes of Cardinals’ Questions on ‘Amoris Laetitia’ The full documentation relating to the cardinals’ initiative, entitled ‘Seeking Clarity: A Plea to Untie the Knots in Amoris Laetitia.’ Four cardinals have turned to what they call an “age-old” process of posing a series of questions to Pope Francis in the hope that his clarification will help clear up “grave disorientation and great confusion” caused by key parts of his summary document on the synod on the family, Amoris Laetitia. The cardinals — Carlo Caffarra, archbishop emeritus of Bologna; Raymond Burke, patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta; Walter Brandmüller, president emeritus of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences; and Joachim Meisner, archbishop emeritus of Cologne — sent five questions, called dubia (Latin for “doubts”), to the Holy Father and Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on Sept. 19, along with an accompanying letter. Each of the dubia is aimed at eliciting from the Apostolic See clarification on key parts of the document, most notably whether it is admissible to allow any remarried divorcees without an annulment Holy Communion. Due to varying interpretations of this and other parts of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), some of which appear to contradict previous papal teachings (those of Pope St. John Paul II in particular), the cardinals said they chose to highlight those points in “charity and justice,” for the sake of Church unity. Consistent with his tendency of so far not responding to concerns about the apostolic exhortation, the Holy Father also did not reply to their request, although sources confirm that he did receive it.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION On the Cardinals Critical of the Pope: The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Fears Polarization 1 December 2016 Cardinal Müller: The Cardinals’ letter is directed to the Pope personally—but the Pope could commission the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “to mediate the differences of opinion ad hoc.” Rome-Madrid (Kath.net/KAP) For the time being, the Vatican will not answer the letter of the four Cardinals—among them the Germans Joachim Meisner and Walter Brandmüller—who sought more clarity from the Pope in dealing with the divorced and remarried. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith acts and speaks “with the authority of the Pope” and “cannot involve itself in disputes of opinion,” said its Prefect, Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, on Thursday in a “Kathpress” interview in Rome. He sees here the danger of polarization. Müller pointed out that the letter is directed to the Pope. But the Pope could commission the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “to mediate the differences of opinion ad hoc.” The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is responsible for all questions of ecclesial teaching on doctrine and morals. Along with Meisner and Brandmüller, signatories comprise the American Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke and the former Archbishop of Bologna, Cardinal Carlo Caffarra. They requested from the Pope among other things a clarification concerning whether Francis’ exhortation Amoris Laetitia grants permission for the divorced and remarried to receive communion in exceptional cases. The four Cardinals made the letter public because Francis decided not to answer them and they desired to encourage further debate on the subject.

The Holy See APOSTOLIC JOURNEY TO COLOGNE ON THE OCCASION OF THE XX WORLD YOUTH DAY DEPARTURE CEREMONY ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI Cologne Airport Sunday, 21 August 2005 Distinguished Mr President, Dear Young Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen,At the conclusion of this, my first Visit to Germany as the Bishop of Rome and the Successor of Peter, I must express once again my heartfelt gratitude for the welcome given to me, to my collaborators and especially to the many young people who came to Cologne from every continent for this World Youth Day.The Lord has called me to succeed our beloved Pope John Paul II, whose inspired idea it was to initiate the series of World Youth Days. I have taken up this legacy with awe and also with joy, and I give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to experience in the company of so many young people this further step along their spiritual pilgrimage from continent to continent, following the Cross of Christ.I am grateful to all those who have so effectively ensured that every phase of this extraordinary gathering could take place in an orderly and serene fashion. These days spent together have given many young men and women from the whole world the opportunity to become better acquainted with Germany. We are all well aware of the evil that emerged from our Homeland during the 20th century, and we acknowledge it with shame and suffering.During these days, thanks be to God, it has become quite evident that there was and is another Germany, a Land of singular human, cultural and spiritual resources.

Credit: Felix Schmitt for The New York Times THOLEY, Germany — For Abbot Mauritius Choriol, the new church windows being ceremoniously inaugurated on Saturday at Tholey Abbey are a gift: from God, from two generous patrons and from Gerhard Richter. The three windows — with deep reds and blues prevailing on the two outer displays and the central one dominated by radiant gold — are made in stained glass to a symmetrical design by Mr. Richter, the revered German artist. “Abstract art is not normally my thing,” said the abbot, who oversees Tholey Abbey. “But you don’t need to be an art expert to appreciate the qualities of these.” In the days since the installation was completed on Sept. 10, the abbey’s monks have been able to enjoy the windows in peace. But if all goes according to plan, that will change: The windows, at more than 30 feet tall, play a key role in the monks’ plan to secure the abbey’s future by turning it into a center for hospitality and education. With recurring patterns and intense colors, Mr. Richter’s windows resemble the design of a Persian rug. Credit: Felix Schmitt for The New York Times From October, the abbey grounds will be open to the public six days a week.
