Alchemy in Eastern Literature
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Volume 23 № 1 2020, 22-47 © Khazar University Press 2020 DOI: 10.5782/2223-2621.2020.23.1.22 Alchemy in Eastern Literature Hamlet Isakhanli Khazar University, Baku, Azerbaijan [email protected] Abstract Alchemy, developing in Ancient Egypt and its environs, was formed during the Islamic age as the branch of science and technology. The transmutation of base metals into noble metals and attempts to achieve immortality or rejuvenation by elixir or philosopher`s stone have been expansively reflected in Eastern literature and folklore. This research discusses the endeavors of great rulers of the ancient East, alchemists of the pre-Islamic and, especially, Islamic periods, and prominent writers of the Islamic Golden Age and contemporary period who wrote various treatises devoted or related to alchemy and alchemists. Discussions here include the great Sumerian epic “Gilgamesh” and the legend of Alexander the Great’s attempt to gain immortality, as well as the story of alchemist Mary of Copt. The last two are related in a poem by Nizami, prominent representative of the twelfth century Azerbaijani literary school that wrote in Persian. Distinct images of alchemy were rendered in his poems, moreover, he created multi-faceted alchemical metaphors to describe transformations within humanity. Khagani Shirvani, Nizami’s contemporary, and nineteenth century Azerbaijani thinker Mirza Akhundov, also addressed the topic of alchemy, as well as religious mysticism in Islam and alchemy. Alchemical episodes in the works of great figures of Eastern Sufi literature like Al-Ghazali, Suhrawardy, Ibn Arabi and Rumi have been scrutinized. Quidditas 40 (2019) 37 Eroticism as a Metaphor for the Human-Divine Relationhip in Attar’s Conference of the Birds, or Mantiqu’t-Tair Marisa Sikes Austin Peay State University Farídu’d-Dín Ἁṭṭār’s The Speech of the Birds employs transgressive erotic imagery in multiple sub-tales in ways that both enhance the frame tale’s significance and suggest that persistent, discrete categories of love poetry and religious poetry are untenable as far as Ἁṭṭār’s works are concerned. Eroticism in Ἁṭṭār’s work paradoxically elicits shock and supports orthodoxy, sometimes simultaneously. In the narrative of Shaikh-i Sam’ān religious taboos are broken by a Muslim shaikh devoted to a Christian beloved who spurns him continuously. In “The Princess and the Beautiful Slave-Boy” eroticism is overtly presented as a metaphor for temporary, ecstatic union with the divine. -

If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Rabindranath Tagore’s Syncretistic Philosophy * and the Persian Sufi Tradition Leonard Lewisohn Preface Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) has been praised by a number of Bengali Muslim authors for his sympathetic portrayal of Islamic concepts and ideals, and it is well known that some of his works of prose and verse were influenced by Persian poetry and Sufism. Tagore’s father knew Persian and could recite the poetry of Ḥāfiẓ (d. 1389) by heart. Tagore himself was also deeply influenced by the Persian classical poet. In the last decade of his life, Tagore described his admiration for the great Persian Sufi poets, visiting the tombs of Ḥāfiẓ and Sa‘dī in Shiraz. In this essay, I will discuss the spiritual milieu of the Persianate culture of nineteenth and early twentieth century Bengal in an attempt to shed light on the extent of the influence of Persian Sufi ideas on this milieu in general and Tagore in particular. Attention will also be given to other aspects of Tagore’s religious syncretism: Bāul mysticism and its lyric poetry, Sahaja Buddhism, Vedanta philosophy, the Upanishads and a few other currents of Eastern thought. -
Sufi Commentaries on the Qur1an in Classical Islam
SÁFI COMMENTARIES ON THE QUR1AN IN CLASSICAL ISLAM The Classical period of Islam, from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries, was the period in which the most influential commentaries on the Qur1an were written. Sufi Commentaries on the Qur1an in Classical Islam looks at the unique contributions of Sufis to this genre and how these contributions fit into the theological and exegetical discussions of the time. The study begins with an examination of several key hermeneutical assumptions of Sufis, including their understanding of the ambiguous and multivalent nature of the Qur1anic text, the role that both the intellect and spiritual disciplines play in acquiring knowledge of its meanings, and the ever-changing nature of the self which seeks this kind of knowledge. The second half of the study is an analysis and comparison of the themes and styles of several different commentaries on the Qur1anic story of Musa (Moses) and al-Khadir; the figure of Maryam (The Virgin Mary); and the Light Verse. It demonstrates that, while Sufi interpretation has often been characterized as allegorical, these writings are more notable for their variety of philosophical, visionary, literary, and homiletic styles. Sufi Commentaries on the Qur1an in Classical Islam is the first comprehensive study of the contributions of Sufis to the genre of commentaries on the Qur1an and is essential reading for those with research interests in Sufism, Qur1anic exegesis and Islam. Sufism and American Literary Masters
Introduction For centuries, the Western fascination with the East has been the subject of countless books, plays, and movies, particularly after the economic and intellec- tual effects of colonialism in the early nineteenth century introduced “Oriental” cultures to a sophisticated drawing-room audience. However, Hafiz, Sa‘di, Jami, Rumi, and other Sufi masters had a place, however obscure and inaccurately portrayed, in the corpus of English translations long before Oriental themes and settings became a popular characteristic of nineteenth-century poetry. In fact, Sufi poetry was available to a European audience as early as the sixteenth cen- tury: the earliest reference to Persian poetry occurred in English in 1589, when George Puttenham included four anonymous “Oriental” poems in translation in The Arte of English Poesie; translations of Sa‘di’s Gulistan were available in Latin as early as 1654’s Rosarium, translated by the Dutch orientalist Georgius Gentius. From the early seventeenth century onward, Western interest in Persian and Sufi poetry steadily increased, though such interest most often took the form of general references to Persian language and culture and not to specific poets and their works. Such references were already a standard component of the medieval travel narrative, and almost always misidentified the names of Iranian and Arab poets, mystics, and philosophers, accompanied by equally creative spelling varia- tions. Moreover, there was no literary value attached to literal translations, and no effort made to replicate the formal elements of the original poems. Instead, Sufi poetry entered Western literary circles as versified adaptations or imitations. Sa‘di’s Gulistan, Hafiz’s Divan, Omar Khayyam’s Ruba‘iyyat, as well as Firdawsi’s monumental work of Persian epic Shah Nameh, were all available to English audiences in some form by 1790.
