Title of Thesis/Project/Extended Essay The Curtain Wlthin: The Management of Soclal and Symbolic Classlflcation among the Masset Haida Author: (signature) Marianne Boel scher April 2, 1985 (date) I ABSTRACT : Title of Dissertation: THE CURTAIN WITHIN: THE MANAGEMENT OF SOCIAL AND SYMBOLIC CLASSIFICATION AMONG THE MASSET HAIDA The Haida conceive of their own social and mythical worlds as ambiguous, as having more than one reality, hence open to more than one interpretation. Accordingly, the symbols of social relationships, and those of the rapport with the natural and supernatural world are con- tinuously renegotiated and mani pul ated in social discourse, used for social and political ends in negotiating legitimacy over status and property ownership. Using the theoretical models of action theory and practice theory, this thesis deals with the management of traditional meanings among the Masset Haida. It is based on data collected, mainly through participant -1 observation and interviewing, during 23 months of fieldwork with the Nasset Haida in 1979-1981, and on the evaluation of published ethnographic and ethnohi storical sources on the Haida . The traditional values of Haida society and the social action surrounding them are analysed as centering around the organization into matrimoieties and matrilineages; individual rank operating within the J i -- - -" neaqs a set of kinship categories invoking group membershi p and status as we1 1 as complementary fi1 iation; marriage "rules"- creating d alliances with other ups; andestateof the 1ineages, in- particular names and totemic crests,The rhetoric surrounding group membership and boundaries, rank euphemized as "iespect", kinship I categories, marital alliancesj names and crests, carries conscious sy~b~!sc load. In this context it is shown that the meanings of the "rules" and classificatory schemes associated with them which are cited in public discourse cannot be understood in terms of their internal logic alone. Instead, their flux and conscious mu1 ti plicity of meaning can be grasped only ifseen in connection with the social processes involved in their production. The ambiguous and f1exi ble interpretation of the social world is - - ---- --- -_I_ shown to be parallel to and conceptually connected with the mu1 tiple real ity of the mythical world. , the Trickster-Transformer , stands --C---A..-. I40re,over, the idea of transformations between animal, human and supernatural being states is connected to the logic and practices of sorcery, which again involve human agency. (This world is the same as the edge of a knife. When you are walking, watch your steps. If you don't watch your steps, you will fall off the earth.) - Haida proverb "One of the great joys I have gotten out of the Northwest Coast is the feeling I have that these people looked at the world in a very different way than we do. They weren't bound by the silly feeling that it's impossible for two figures to occupy the same space at the same time." (Bill Reid 1975: 46). Margaret Blackman composes a remarkable life history of Florence Davidson on the book ‘ During My Time: Florence Edenshaw Davidson’. Davidson is an indigenous Haida woman from the village Masset that is now formally known as Queen Charlotte Islands that is located in the Northwest coast of Canada. As the book During My Time emphases the Haida villages during the late 19 th century, Blackman interviewed Davidson in the confined of Davidson’s kitchen and front room that Blackman taped 45 hours during the time of 1977 of the “life cycle, economics and division of labour, ceremonial activities and specialist roles” (Stearns, 1985), as the two build their friendship. The well-respected native woman was born in 1896, raised from in the big family whereas she was the ninth child born; her father was a famous woodcarver Charles Edenshaw. The ethnography is written in an indigenous female view of the life of Florence Davidson and those that influence her throughout her time, it also touches on topics such as acculturation throughout the book.

Metlakatla Cumulative Effects Management: Methods, Results and Future CEM GUIDE FOR Direction of a First Nation-led CEM Program was launched at the Indigenous FIRST NATIONS Forum on Cumulative Effects in Calgary, February 4-6. In 2014, northwest British Columbia was awash in LNG referrals and proposals. The Metlakatla First Nations responded through its Governing Council by establishing a cumulative effects management program. The Council directed the Metlakatla Stewardship Society (MSS) to undertake an Indigenous-informed approach to the work. MSS Executive Director Ross Wilson says leadership wanted to understand the full extent of oil and gas industry benefits and impacts to the community, rather than examining them one by one. “We weren’t talking about one pipeline and one facility, there were numerous pipelines and facility referrals submitted,” explains Wilson. “It was leadership’s directive that established the CEM initiative.” There was limited cumulative effects work being done on the North Coast at the time and few examples of implementing CEM in an Indigenous context. With funding from project proponents and MITACS, Metlakatla and Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) partnered to establish an “Indigenous Cumulative Effects” approach. “As a department, we wanted to know what the community values were. How those values might be impacted by industrial activities. And how could we monitor those impacts and provide management approaches,” Wilson explains.

As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we’ve ignored the wild intelligence of our bodies, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. Abram’s writing subverts this distance, drawing readers ever closer to their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the human body and the breathing Earth. The shape-shifting of ravens, the erotic nature of gravity, the eloquence of thunder, the pleasures of being edible: all have their place in this book. --------. The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-than-Human World. New York: Vintage, 1997. Abram argues that “we are human only in contact, and conviviality, with what is not human” (p. ix). He supports this premise with empirical information, sensorial experience, philosophical reflection, and the theoretical discipline of phenomenology and draws on Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of perception as reciprocal exchange in order to illuminate the sensuous nature of language. Additionally, he explores how Western civilization has lost this perception and provides examples of cultures in which the “landscape of language” has not been forgotten. The environmental crisis is central to Abram’s purpose and despite his critique of the consequences of a written culture, he maintains the importance of literacy and encourages the release of its true potency.

He gestured as he said this toward something slender, blue as air and green as beachgrass, that was moving around the carved screens at the rear of the house, like a heron choosing a fishing hole.

For the first time in living memory, a traditional totem pole was being raised in the community. A NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA PRODUCTION NOW IS THE TIME A NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA PRODUCTION NOW IS THE TIME Elders would speak of “a forest of totem poles,” recalling a time when the giant carvings were common throughout the Haida Gwaii archipelago, but by the late 1960s most had vanished — suppressed by Christian missionaries and assimilationist laws that aimed explicitly to eradicate Indigenous identity from the Canadian landscape. The new pole was the brainchild of Robert Davidson, also known by his Haida name, Guud San Glans, a visionary young artist who would reinvigorate the tradition, becoming a central figure in a vibrant Haida renaissance. While previous generations had kept Haida art alive with small-scale wooden and argillite carvings, Davidson was working a monumental scale that had not been seen in almost a century. Twenty-two-year-old Robert Davidson and his grandfather, Tsinii Robert. Hardly out of his teens at the time, Davidson and his project were the subject of a short NFB doc, released in 1970, called This Was the Time. But the film raised more questions than it answered, presenting events through the muddled lens of the dominant Euro-Canadian culture.

Urrea Master of Arts University of Oregon History Department September 2019 Title: “Our People Scattered:” Violence, Captivity, and Colonialism on the Northwest Coast, 1774-1846” This thesis interrogates the practice, economy, and sociopolitics of slavery and captivity among Indigenous peoples and Euro-American colonizers on the Northwest Coast of North America from 1774-1846. Through the use of secondary and primary source materials, including the private journals of fur traders, oral histories, and anthropological analyses, this project has found that with the advent of the maritime fur trade and its subsequent evolution into a land-based fur trading economy, prolonged interactions between Euro-American agents and Indigenous peoples fundamentally altered the economy and practice of Native slavery on the Northwest Coast.
