We all know there are big stories of luck and planning for all of us underneath this assembly. Though we’ve carefully arranged every grain of this work, soon The Holidays will be over, washed away by waves of time we’ll ride together memorably for a moment. It’s good we all got here. The words ‘page’ and ‘stage’ rhyme in the writing, but the journey from one domain to the other is far from simple, and far from sure. You’ll experience the work of an all-Queensland creative team that composed this show: a safe, striving and skilful set of hands, and in this I include artists that had a hand in its development through the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award. We’ve woven art forms together so they influence and interanimate one another, drawn by tides of musicality that sing through the structure of the show. If you’ve ever been moved by a song, you will know that music can enable a shift from the ‘as if’ to the ‘what is’, often without a word being spoken. Theatre is a place of evocation rather than emulation, and there’s something simple and sublime about the seaside. We want to bring that beach feel into the theatre in ways that release shared shores already inside us, parts of us drawn to the edge of vastness, those last safe places where wind, waves and sand can reshape our loves with a wildness that will outlast us. David Fathers and Sons Beachside Sensory Feast Director’s Note What a joy to be able to introduce The Holidays to Queensland audiences, artists, dreamers, anyone who has a dad, or knows someone who does. Bridget Boyle Director For the team of creatives who have had the privilege of bringing the premiere production of The Holidays to life, performers, design, sound, projection and music have come together to create what we called a “story machine” through the interplay of each moving part. Through this machine, we get to ask questions about legacy, memory and fatherhood. Can we change the patterns laid down for us over generations, or can we skip the groove and make our own record of the present and the future? David’s work showcases the deceptive simplicity of the best of children’s literature; big themes are distilled to their essence, dialogue is succinct and small moments are writ large. You’ll also see and hear David’s signature, knowingly ironic touch throughout the work — when the 12-year-old protagonist Oliver is “unexpectedly” able to talk to the audience, he wryly invites them to join him in building his imaginative world: “It’ll be a bit daggy, but if you do it too I’ll know you’re with me”. Thanks to all the team at Queensland Theatre for their support in bringing this story to the stage — and thanks to all the many artists who have contributed to its development. We are also incredibly grateful to the artists and artists’ estates who have generously allowed us to use their iconic artworks in our story. The Holidays is set at an unspecified Queensland beachside town, and the salt-scented dreams of hazy, lazy, sandy summer holidays so familiar to Queenslanders drift through this production.     September 20, 2019 Queensland Theatre announces new Artistic Director: Lee Lewis Today Queensland Theatre’s Chair Elizabeth Jameson has announced that the new Artistic Director for the company will be well known cultural leader and director, and current Artistic Director and CEO of Griffin Theatre Company, Lee Lewis. “Next year we will celebrate 50 years of being Queensland Theatre: we’ve consolidated the company as the national home of new stories, we will stage the theatrical event of the year in the world premiere of Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe, adapted for the stage by Tim McGarry and we will welcome Lee Lewis as Artistic Director, taking over from Sam Strong who leaves this company in extraordinary shape,” she said. “Queensland Theatre has made real its vision of leading from Queensland, with key achievements including a new theatre, record audiences and growth, national industry leadership through gender parity of writers and directors for four successive years, more diverse voices, more new stories and world premieres, and the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories.     Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance vol. 8 (23), 2011 71 DOI: 10.2478/v10224-011-0006-5 Emma Cox “What’s past is prologue”: Performing Shakespeare and Aboriginality in Australia “Come unto these yellow sands, / And then take hands” —The Tempest (1.2.375-76) At the beginning of the second Act of The Tempest, Antonio compels Sebastian to his murderous purpose, perceiving distance from civilization and conventional political power, not to mention an heir-apparent, as a rationale for immediate action: “what’s past is prologue” (2.1.253). The theatrical metaphor is, for Antonio, a means by which to assert his mastery over history. However, as the play unfolds and the past makes its claim upon the protagonists, Antonio’s words echo as a reminder of history’s continual presence, its inextricable implication in the contemporary world as it is made and remade. The entanglement of history and presence forms the context of the Australian performances of Shakespeare I examine here. These works are informed by the cultural and territorial dispossession, as well as the ongoing strategies of resistance, that since colonization have conditioned the lived realities of Aboriginal Australians. In keeping with a pattern established in the early days of British settlement, performances of Shakespeare’s plays are a staple of many Australian theatrical calendars. Increasingly, and often at their most effective, these performances transact within and for their local contexts, negotiating contemporary Australian cultures and identities. In light of the solid body of so-called alternative or revisionist Shakespeare scholarship, particularly in the area of postcolonialism —the critical basis of John Golder and Richard Madeleine’s observation, “Aboriginal Australians have good reasons to be suspicious of the ‘ideological work’ Shakespeare can be ‘made to perform’” (9)—it is striking to consider that “Aboriginalized” performances have provided some of the most innovative and important Shakespearean theatre in Australia in recent years.

The show reunites powerhouse actors, Logie award-nominee Jessica Tovey (QT’s Constellations also in TV’s Bad Mothers, Wolf Creek, Home & Away, Underbelly) in the title role with multi award-winner Christen O’Leary (QT’s End of the Rainbow, Scenes from a Marriage, Ladies in Black also in TV’s Hoges, Wentworth and Neighbours) as Antigone’s adversary Creon, and Kevin Spink (Hydra, Kelly, Macbeth) as her ill-fated fiancé, Haemon.     FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE Welcome to QPAC and to this performance of shake & stir theatre co’s production of Dracula. Dracula is a classic story which has chilled and terrified audiences since it was first published more than a century ago. It has spawned a multitude of similarly gothic, vampiric tales and been told and retold through many lenses and in many forms – film, theatre, opera, ballet. This version by shake & stir has been immensely popular with audiences and I am sure those new to the work and familiar will enjoy this atmospheric version. shake & stir are an outstanding Queensland success story – a company started by three friends, Ross, Nelle and Nick, which has developed new artists as well as created opportunities for young audiences to embrace live theatre. At QPAC, we have been proud to work with and alongside shake & stir as they have flourished into an innovative and exciting company with a strong following both here in Queensland and nationally, thanks to their busy touring schedule.
