The border that translation is said to cross is, typically, linguistic: the dominant understanding and theorization of translation relies on the notion of linguistic difference and autonomy, whereby meaning is transferred from one bounded linguistic system to the other. This dissertation takes as its starting point the border between languages, recognizing that linguistic borders as we know them today are neither natural nor ontological, but the result of the sedimentation and naturalization of a specific kind of linguistic mapping along discriminatory (ethno)national and racial lines. Its premise is that the gesture of translation, rather than simply crossing a pre-existing linguistic border, constructs linguistic difference by drawing a border where there is not one in the first place. iii This dissertation thus problematizes the structural view of language that underlies the bulk of Western translation practice and theory by looking at the anticolonial, queer, and postnational linguistic cartographies that are drawn and imagined in contemporary literary works published in Canada between 2005 and 2020, and written by voices that are minoritized within Canada’s linguistic regime.

D Die vergleichende Perspektive soll einen neuen Einblick in die dort vorherrschenden sprachplanerischen Aktivitäten ermöglichen. Nachstehend folgt die deutsche Zusammenfas- sunge der einzelnen Kapitel. Im einleitenden Kapitel 1 werden die Schwerpunkte der Studie erläutert und erste Hin- tergrundinformationen vermittelt. Die wichtige Stellung Quebecs in der Sprachpolitik- und Sprachplanungsforschung wird hervorgehoben (Abschnitt 1.1), gefolgt von einer Übersicht über die Geschichte und Form der beiden Hauptsprachen der Provinz (Abschnitt 1.2). CHARLES Anna Kruzynski School of Social Work, McGill University, Montréal, Québec January 2004 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Anna Kruzynski, 2004 Abstract Women made, and continue to make history in Point St. Charles, and in doing so, transform selves, groups and community. Building on the literature on class and gender in community organising, read through the conceptual lens of “translocational positionality” (Anthias, 2002a), I tell a story of the journeys of a group of ten women activists through four decades of neighbourhood organising. I show that although all the women were first involved in citizens’ committees around practical needs such as housing, welfare, urban renewal and education, most of them, stimulated by feminist agitators in their midst, came to new awareness about gender inequalities, to new and deepening analyses, and to individual and collective actions around strategic gender needs. Part and parcel of this spiral of change (Nadeau, 1996) were the tensions that emerged with their families, friends and neighbours, and even with the agitators themselves. Out of these tensions came transformations at the macro level – community, public opinion and government, at the meso level – organisational structures and cultures, and at the micro level – family and selves. Next I do a metanarrative on the methodology that underlies the project upon which my thesis is based, one that borrows from feminist community organising practice (Gutiérrez & Lewis, 1994) to deal with the many ethical dilemmas inherent to feminist life history methodology (Geiger, 1990).

Certain anglicisms seem to have become integrated into rural Quebecois in diverse domains, including forestry, business and commerce, and industry, and have stayed outside the realm of family and farm life. In other cases' it seems that English words have been adopted to fill gaps in French vocabulary. The study's report outlines the characteristics of both monomorphemic and polymorphemic borrowings, including.
