Through his service in the American Revolutionary War, active role in the Continental Congress and most notably as the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Hamilton helped form and implement governmental institutions and policies that shaped modern America. Hamilton Grange, the home of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton, provides an important and interesting viewpoint into the life of the Hamilton family, and the history of one of America’s most influential founding fathers. Through its broad scope of materials, this collection sheds light on the physical history of Hamilton Grange, as well as on Alexander Hamilton and his role in politics and government. These materials provide supplemental information and images surrounding Hamilton and the eventual acquisition of his home by the National Park Service. Scope and Content Statement: This collection consists of a variety of individually cataloged items related to the Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the Hamilton family. Prior to the National Park Service, Hamilton Grange was administered by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society. This collection is rich in printed materials including prints and newspaper clippings, as well as correspondence, photographs, lantern slides, post cards, maps, textiles, drawings and books. Processing Information: This collection was processed as part of the Manhattan Sites Archives Project in 2011 by Assistant Archivist Rachel M. National Park Service: Manhattan Sites Finding Aid Hamilton Grange National Memorial Cataloged Archival Items – Multiple Catalog #’s Page 5 PROVENANCE NOTE The items that comprise this collection were assembled from materials located in the Manhattan Sites collections, now housed at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York. Multiple accessions of Hamilton Grange materials constitute this collection of archival items, containing a diverse scope of materials. Each item has been individually cataloged by the National Park Service. Accessions in this collection include HAGR--00007, HAGR--00008, HAGR--00010, HAGR--00012, HAGR--00013, HAGR--00014, HAGR--00017, HAGR--00018, HAGR--00022, HAGR--00023, HAGR--00025, HAGR--00026, HAGR-- 00027, HAGR--00031, HAGR--00032, HAGR--00033, HAGR--00035, HAGR--00036, HAGR--00040. The acquisition of many of these materials can be traced back to the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society (ASHPS), beginning in 1924, when the Society purchased the Grange from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The ASHPS maintained the estate and materials, and added to the collection through gift and purchase from various individuals and organizations. Limited information on the earliest accession of these materials can be found in the accession files at Federal Hall National Memorial, New York, N.Y. In 1962, the Hamilton Grange Estate and collected materials were deeded to the Federal Government, specifically the National Park Service, on the condition that the Grange be relocated and restored. Upon this transfer, the National Park Service continued to add to the collection through purchase and donation. These acquisitions included not only archival items, but artifactual materials as well. Upon obtaining a copy of the Hamilton Grange deed of gift and inventory from the ASHPS to the NPS, the Manhattan Sites Curatorial office conducted a survey of the accession files. In 1984, accession records were then edited to better reflect the original acquisition of the materials as described in the deed. Newly

Reading Guide My Dear Hamilton William Morrow Paperbacks By Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie ISBN: 9780062466167 Introduction From the New York Times bestselling authors of America’s First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton—a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. Haunting, moving, and beautifully written, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza’s story as it’s never been told before—not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal—but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right. Coming of age on the perilous frontier of revolutionary New York, Elizabeth Schuyler champions the fight for independence. And when she meets Alexander Hamilton, Washington’s penniless but passionate aide-de-camp, she’s captivated by the young officer’s charisma and brilliance. They fall in love, despite Hamilton’s bastard birth and the uncertainties of war. But the union they create—in their marriage and the new nation—is far from perfect. From glittering inaugural balls to bloody street riots, the Hamiltons are at the center of it all—including the political treachery of America’s first sex scandal, which forces Eliza to struggle through heartbreak and betrayal to find forgiveness. When a duel destroys Eliza’s hard-won peace, the grieving widow fights her husband’s enemies to preserve Alexander’s legacy. But long-buried secrets threaten everything Eliza believes about her marriage and her own legacy.

By exploring Hamilton's policy objectives through the lens of the law, my dissertation argues that Hamilton should be understood and evaluated as a foundational lawmaker in the early republic. He used his preferred legal toolbox, the corpus of the English common law, to make lasting legal arguments about the nature of judicial and executive power in republican governments, the boundaries of national versus state power, and the durability of individual rights. Not only did Hamilton combine American and inherited English principles to accomplish and legitimate his statecraft, but, in doing so, Hamilton had a profound influence on the substance of American law,

Halsey iv Abstract This thesis is a look into how Alexander Hamilton has been portrayed on stage in the musical Hamilton: An American Musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The goal of this research is to show that this musical is not history, but rather a commentary on current culture through one of America’s favorite stories (that of the Revolution.) In this show, past figures have been used to discuss the issues of modern America, and that is now being sold as history.

  • Let Me Be Part of the Narrative – the Schuyler Sisters 'Almost
10/22/2018 "Let me be part of the narrative" – The Schuyler Sisters 'almost' feminist? - Contemporary Theatre Review ABOUT JOURNAL INTERVENTIONS Search … “Let me be part of the narrative” – e Schuyler Sisters ‘almost’ feminist? Clare Chandler Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical (Hamilton) (2015) has tapped into the current cultural moment, lauded as the ‘saviour of Broadway’.1 The show’s unique tour de force is the use of hip-hop to convey the story, reigniting the genre and attracting a new musical theatre audience. This musical idiom combined with Hamilton’s colour conscious casting has allowed Miranda to create ‘the story of America then told by America now’2 exposing to critical view the whitewashing of history and the more questionable legacies of the Founding Fathers of America. The show is inescapable, dominating social media through its innovative #Ham4Ham and #Hamildrop initiatives.3 Television shows are even cashing in on Hamilton’s cultural currency with references to the show appearing in Brooklyn Nine Nine, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gilmore Girls (amongst others) as well as talk shows such as e Late Show. With so much exposure it is hard not to get swept up in the hype surrounding the musical. Hamilton is closely associated with happier political times in America. Lin Manuel Miranda premiered an early draft of the opening number at the White House in 2009 and the Obamas were keen supporters of the show, even going so far as to introduce Hamilton’s 2016 Tony Awards performance.

  • UVA LAW | Fed Soc- Hamilton Event
UVA LAW | Fed Soc- Hamilton Event INTERVIEWER: Welcome, everyone, to our last event of the semester, "An Original Document For Every Song InH amilton." Today, we're honored to be joined by Judge Charles Eskridge of the US district court for the Southern District of Texas. Judge Eskridge was appointed to the bench in 2019. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center, teaching on the origins of the Constitution and as a member of the American Law Institute. JUDGE Thank you. Thank you very much, and I'm so glad to be here and to have had the invitation to speak to the CHARLES University of Virginia. I have done this presentation on Hamilton many times at many different law schools, and I ESKRIDGE: have to say that doing it for the University of Virginia, which has obviously such a close connection to Thomas Jefferson but also geographically to James Madison and George Washington, that plays such a big role, each of them in this show, that this really does have extra meaning for me. So now, I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm obsessed withH amilton, but I was all over the soundtrack when it came out. And then-- let me get the share screen started here. And then, my wife noticed a Facebook meme that year and said it applied to me. My thoughts have been replaced by Hamilton lyrics, and it was not just a few lyrics, mind you. 20,520 words to be precise. That works out to about 140 words per minute in the show.

  • Walking Tour of the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery
A Walking Tour of the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery A BRIEF EARLY HISTORY OF THE CEMETERY In the middle decades of the nineteenth century, a revolution took place in the manner in which Americans viewed death and burial. "Rural cemeteries" replaced church yards and family plots as the burial place of choice, and the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery was part of this revolution. Even though they were nearly always located near growing urban areas, these cemeteries were called "rural" because their carefully landscaped grounds embodied a respect for nature, and provided a respite from the chaotic bustle of the city. In December 1852, a committee was formed to seek land for a new cemetery for the city of Poughkeepsie, as it was evident that the local church yard burial grounds would soon be filled. Among the members of the committee was local brewer Matthew Vassar, who later founded Vassar College. The committee first considered °a parcel of fifty acres of land on the east side of Academy Street, which Vassar purchased for $8000, with the intent of then selling it to the subscribers of the cemetery. Not enough subscribers could be found for this land and the committee decided to look for another location. Vassar then built his summer home, named Springside and designed by landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing, on this site. The cemetery committee finally decided on a fifty-four acre parcel of land located on the west side of Academy Street and South Avenue and belonging to the estate of Supreme Court Justice Smith Thompson. This land forms the nucleus of the present cemetery.

And that’s all that really matters, isn’t it? As I reflect on the past year, a highlight was my class’s 45th reunion. In 2018, scores of FHHS alumni attended reunions and likewise took that proverbial “cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.” I hope your year was also filled with happy memories and wish you all the best in 2019.
