Through his service in the American Revolutionary War, active role in the Continental Congress and most notably as the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Hamilton helped form and implement governmental institutions and policies that shaped modern America. Hamilton Grange, the home of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton, provides an important and interesting viewpoint into the life of the Hamilton family, and the history of one of America’s most influential founding fathers. Through its broad scope of materials, this collection sheds light on the physical history of Hamilton Grange, as well as on Alexander Hamilton and his role in politics and government. These materials provide supplemental information and images surrounding Hamilton and the eventual acquisition of his home by the National Park Service. Scope and Content Statement: This collection consists of a variety of individually cataloged items related to the Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the Hamilton family. Prior to the National Park Service, Hamilton Grange was administered by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society. This collection is rich in printed materials including prints and newspaper clippings, as well as correspondence, photographs, lantern slides, post cards, maps, textiles, drawings and books. Processing Information: This collection was processed as part of the Manhattan Sites Archives Project in 2011 by Assistant Archivist Rachel M. Oleaga, with the assistance of Project Archivist Tobi Adler and Lead Archivist Mimi Bowling. Funding Source: Processing of this collection was made possible by a generous donation from the Leon Levy Foundation to the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy. Multiple accessions of Hamilton Grange materials constitute this collection of archival items, containing a diverse scope of materials. Each item has been individually cataloged by the National Park Service. Accessions in this collection include HAGR--00007, HAGR--00008, HAGR--00010, HAGR--00012, HAGR--00013, HAGR--00014, HAGR--00017, HAGR--00018, HAGR--00022, HAGR--00023, HAGR--00025, HAGR--00026, HAGR-- 00027, HAGR--00031, HAGR--00032, HAGR--00033, HAGR--00035, HAGR--00036, HAGR--00040. The acquisition of many of these materials can be traced back to the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society (ASHPS), beginning in 1924, when the Society purchased the Grange from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The ASHPS maintained the estate and materials, and added to the collection through gift and purchase from various individuals and organizations. Limited information on the earliest accession of these materials can be found in the accession files at Federal Hall National Memorial, New York, N.Y. In 1962, the Hamilton Grange Estate and collected materials were deeded to the Federal Government, specifically the National Park Service, on the condition that the Grange be relocated and restored. Upon this transfer, the National Park Service continued to add to the collection through purchase and donation. These acquisitions included not only archival items, but artifactual materials as well. Upon obtaining a copy of the Hamilton Grange deed of gift and inventory from the ASHPS to the NPS, the Manhattan Sites Curatorial office conducted a survey of the accession files. In 1984, accession records were then edited to better reflect the original acquisition of the materials as described in the deed. Newly
