PROVENANCE NOTE

The items that comprise this collection were assembled from materials located in the Manhattan Sites collections, now housed at , , New York. Multiple accessions of Hamilton Grange materials constitute this collection of archival items, containing a diverse scope of materials. Each item has been individually cataloged by the National Park Service.

Accessions in this collection include HAGR--00007, HAGR--00008, HAGR--00010, HAGR--00012, HAGR--00013, HAGR--00014, HAGR--00017, HAGR--00018, HAGR--00022, HAGR--00023, HAGR--00025, HAGR--00026, HAGR-- 00027, HAGR--00031, HAGR--00032, HAGR--00033, HAGR--00035, HAGR--00036, HAGR--00040.

The acquisition of many of these materials can be traced back to the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society (ASHPS), beginning in 1924, when the Society purchased the Grange from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The ASHPS maintained the estate and materials, and added to the collection through gift and purchase from various individuals and organizations. Limited information on the earliest accession of these materials can be found in the accession files at Federal Hall National Memorial, New York, N.Y.

In 1962, the Hamilton Grange Estate and collected materials were deeded to the Federal Government, specifically the National Park Service, on the condition that the Grange be relocated and restored. Upon this transfer, the National Park Service continued to add to the collection through purchase and donation. These acquisitions included not only archival items, but artifactual materials as well.

Upon obtaining a copy of the Hamilton Grange deed of gift and inventory from the ASHPS to the NPS, the Manhattan Sites Curatorial office conducted a survey of the accession files. In 1984, accession records were then edited to better reflect the original acquisition of the materials as described in the deed. Newly identified materials, such as the lantern slide collection, discovered in the American Museum of Immigration (AMI) vault, were accessioned and cataloged accordingly (1990).

HISTORICAL NOTE

Hamilton Grange, located in northern Manhattan, was the home of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton from 1802- 1804. Although Hamilton lived there for a brief period of time, the estate is an important part of American and New York history, and provides an interesting view of this founding father and his life in New York, as well as his enduring legacy.

Alexander Hamilton served a variety of roles in the founding of the United States. In 1777, Hamilton was appointed aide-de-camp to General George ; he also became a member of the Continental Congress (1782-1783) and an active member of the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787. His most notable service was as first Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington. In 1795, he resigned from that position and returned to his law practice in New York. This relocation prompted the purchase of 32 acres of land in Harlem Heights (northern Manhattan) in 1800 that would eventually become the original site of Hamilton Grange.1

Hamilton commissioned architect John McComb Jr., to design his Federal style home in upper Manhattan. He named his home after his grandfather’s estate in Scotland. The Hamilton estate included the Grange as well as a large barn, mill house, henhouse, root house and icehouse. The hilltop site he selected for the structure provided spectacular views on all sides of the Hudson and Harlem Rivers, and Long Island.2 Shortly after Hamilton’s death in 1804, the property was listed for sale (though Elizabeth Hamilton continued to live there until 1833). It subsequently went through several changes of ownership and was relocated twice. In 1889, the Grange was moved several blocks southeast, to West 141st and Convent Avenue, still within the bounds of the original Hamilton estate. The house served St. Luke’s Parish as a chapel until the church was completed next door in 1892. It then became the rectory. It was also used as a dayschool and as meeting space for the Daughters of the .3

In 1924, the property was acquired by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society (ASHPS). According to its By-Laws, the Society “…aims to…preserve landmarks, objects and other records of past and present; to erect historical memorials; and generally to promote popular appreciation of the scenic beauties of America and respect for the history of the nation, its honored names and its physical memorials.” After renovations and restorations, including the relocating of a statue of Hamilton from the Hamilton Club to the front yard in 1936, the Grange was opened to the public as a museum from public education. Although the ASHPS made many repairs, removal of the building to a new location was necessary in order to provide a more suitable setting and permit the Grange’s restoration. Due to the relocation to Convent Avenue and surrounding development of the area, the Grange experienced physical alterations, including the removal of two side porches, and the damage caused by the creation of an apartment building that touched the north side of the Grange.4 There were numerous efforts to relocate Hamilton Grange, but due to stringent deed agreements and finances, they were unsuccessful.

In 1962, to ensure the establishment of Hamilton Grange as a National Memorial and the move of the structure to a more appropriate location, the ASHPS donated the house to the Federal government, and Hamilton Grange entered into the National Park Service (NPS). Restorations and repairs were undertaken to preserve Hamilton Grange throughout the years, and eventually the NPS succeeded in moving the Grange to a more suitable site, a 0.91 acre plot in St. Nicholas Park. The Grange has undergone more renovations and development since its relocation in 2008 in order to fully restore the exterior and interior. The National Park Service continues to maintain the property as a National Historic Landmark under the direction of the Manhattan Sites office.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Hamilton Grange National Memorial Cataloged Archival Items collection is comprised of multiple genres of documentary materials concerning Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the life of Alexander Hamilton and his family. Genres include correspondence, photographs, lantern slides, glass negatives, prints and printed materials, which includes newspapers, magazines and postcards, maps, sheet music, drawings and published books. An example of the mourning kerchief created immediately after Hamilton’s death is also present in this collection. Items date from 1699 to 1970, with the bulk of material dating from the 19thcentury.

Hamilton Grange is represented throughout the genres of this collection. Printed materials, specifically newspaper and magazine articles, document the history of the Grange. Highlights of these materials include articles in such periodicals and publications as The Illustrated American, The Sunday Magazine and Harper’s Monthly Magazine discussing the Grange and the famous Thirteen Gum Trees, which Hamilton is said to have planted to commemorate the original thirteen states. Photomechanical images are also included in these articles. Publications also chronicle other aspects of the Grange, including an advertisement in The New York Evening Post listing the Grange for sale by Elizabeth Hamilton following the death of her husband. Architectural drawings created by the Historic American Buildings survey provide a detailed view of the appearance of the Grange in 1935 from multiple perspectives, including a floor plan for each level of the home. Photographs and lantern slides in the collection shed light on the Grange, its multiple locations and surrounding areas. These images also provide a broader context for studying the history of New York City and development in Harlem in the mid 1800’s.

The adult life of Alexander Hamilton is strongly represented in this collection. A wealth of etched and engraved portraits depicting Hamilton as a lawyer, military officer, Secretary of the Treasury and founding father reflect his many political achievements and status. His involvement in politics, and time spent as a writer, is displayed through copies of his work, The Federalist, a book of his official reports, and the famous letter in which he discusses the conduct and character of (1735-1826). Important historical events such as the Hamilton Harangue can be seen in the Hudson Fulton Celebration Postcard depicting a float reenactment of the event.

The famous between Alexander Hamilton and in 1804 is present in printed material and correspondence in this collection. Included is a facsimile letter written by Aaron Burr to Hamilton in June of 1804 ending in a request for the duel. The funeral service for Hamilton in 1804, along with a copy of his will and funeral oration delivered by Gouverneur Morris is present in a copy of The New York Spectator. The Alexander Hamilton mourning scarf is also included in this collection. The scarf was created as an expression of grief over the death of Hamilton and contains important symbols of his life and role in the history of the early United States. Also included are multiple photographic versions of the pistols used in the duel. Various etchings and engravings of the duel site at Weehawken, N.J. can also be found, as well as an image of the Bayard Mansion, the location where Hamilton died. Photographic and print references to his memorial statue, monument and tomb are also included.

Members of the Hamilton family are referenced throughout this collection, specifically in personal correspondence. Highlights include a letter from William Hamilton to Alexander Hamilton from 1789. A variety of books inscribed with the names of Elizabeth Hamilton, , John C. Hamilton and General Alexander Hamilton (grandson of Hamilton) are included. Lantern slides and printed portraits of Elizabeth Hamilton and of , Elizabeth’s father, are also present.

This collection includes material from the American Revolutionary War period as Alexander Hamilton experienced it. Military maps of the Battle of Yorktown and Battle of New York are present, along with etchings and engravings of large military forts and bases in the Northeastern United States. Portraits and prints of Henry Laurens and George Washington with various members of his cabinet, including portraits with Hamilton, at important events in early American History, are also present.

Miscellaneous materials with no immediate relation to Alexander Hamilton and the Grange include a modern color map of the West Indies, a print of McCowans Pass, and a framed print of the boxing match between Sayers and Heenan in 1890.
