This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract We propose a new approach to studies on partial Steiner triple systems con- sisting in determining complete graphs contained in them. We establish the structure which complete graphs yield in a minimal PSTS that contains them. As a by-product we introduce the notion of a binomial PSTS as a configuration with parameters of a minimal PSTS with a complete subgraph. A representation of binomial PSTS with at least a given number of its maximal complete subgraphs is given in terms of systems of perspectives. Finally, we prove that for each admissible integer there is a binomial PSTS with this number of maximal complete subgraphs. Epilogue to the Satires, ALEXANDER POPE The collection of all subsets of cardinality k of a set with v elements (k < v) has the ³ ´ v¡t property that any subset of t elements, with 0 · t · k, is contained in precisely k¡t subsets of size k. The subsets of size k provide therefore a nice covering for the subsets of a lesser cardinality. Observe that the number of subsets of size k that contain a subset of size t depends only on v; k; and t and not on the specific subset of size t in question. This is the essential defining feature of the structures that we wish to study. The example we just described inspires general interest in producing similar coverings ³ ´ v without using all the k subsets of size k but rather as small a number of them as possi- 1 2 CHAPTER 7. BLOCK DESIGNS ble. The coverings that result are often elegant geometrical configurations, of which the projective and affine planes are examples. These latter configurations form nice coverings only for the subsets of cardinality 2, that is, any two elements are in the same number of these special subsets of size k which we call blocks (or, in certain instances, lines). A collection of subsets of cardinality k, called blocks, with the property that every subset of size t (t · k) is contained in the same number (say ¸) of blocks is called a t-design. We supply the reader with constructions for t-designs with t as high as 5. -

This dissertation is a contribution to our understanding of this interesting but poorly understood stage in the history of philosophy. Kant’s theory of the concepts, postulates, and proofs of geometry was informed by philosophical reflection on diagram-based geometry in the Greek synthetic tradition. However, even before the widespread acceptance of non-Euclidean geometry, the projective revolution in nineteenth century geometry eliminated diagrams from proofs and introduced “ideal” elements that could not be given a straightforward interpretation in empirical space. -

BUSSEY By means of such a generalized conception of geometry as is inevitably suggested by the recent and wide-spread researches in the foundations of that science, there is given in § 1 a definition of a class of tactical configurations which includes many well known configurations as well as many new ones. In § 2 there is developed a method for the construction of these configurations which is proved to furnish all configurations that satisfy the definition. In §§ 4-8 the configurations are shown to have a geometrical theory identical in most of its general theorems with ordinary projective geometry and thus to afford a treatment of finite linear group theory analogous to the ordinary theory of collineations. In § 9 reference is made to other definitions of some of the configurations included in the class defined in § 1. § 1. Synthetic definition. By a finite projective geometry is meant a set of elements which, for sugges- tiveness, are called points, subject to the following five conditions : I. The set contains a finite number ( > 2 ) of points. It contains subsets called lines, each of which contains at least three points. II. If A and B are distinct points, there is one and only one line that contains A and B. HI. If A, B, C are non-collinear points and if a line I contains a point D of the line AB and a point E of the line BC, but does not contain A, B, or C, then the line I contains a point F of the line CA (Fig. -

Gallian) We prove that the well-covered dimension of the Levi graph of a point-line configuration with v points, b lines, r lines incident with each point, and every line containing k points is equal to 0, whenever r > 2. 1. Introduction The concept of the well-covered space of a graph was first introduced by Caro, Ellingham, Ramey, and Yuster[Caro et al. 1998; Caro and Yuster 1999] as an effort to generalize the study of well-covered graphs. Brown and Nowakowski [2005] continued the study of this object and, among other things, provided several examples of graphs featuring odd behaviors regarding their well-covered spaces. One of these special situations occurs when the well-covered space of the graph is trivial, i.e., when the graph is anti-well-covered. In this work, we prove that almost all Levi graphs of configurations in the family of the so-called .vr ; bk/- configurations (see Definition 3) are anti-well-covered. We start our exposition by providing the following definitions and previously known results. Any introductory concepts we do not present here may be found in the books by Bondy and Murty[1976] and Grünbaum[2009]. We consider only simple and undirected graphs. -

A brief review is given of the linear fractional subgroups of the Mathieu groups. The main part of the paper then deals with the proj~x-~tiveinterpretation of the Golay codes; these codes are shown to describe Coxeter's configuration in PG(5, 3) and Todd's configuration in PG(11, 2) when interpreted projectively. We obtain two twelve-dimensional representations of M24. One is obtained as the coUineation group that permutes the twelve special points in PC,(11, 2); the other arises by interpreting geometrically the automorphism group of the binary Golay code. Both representations are reducible to eleven-dimensional representations of M24. Keywords. Introduction We shall first review some of the known properties of the Mathieu groups and their linear fractional subgroups. This is mainly a brief resum6 of the first two of Conway's 'Three Lectures on Exceptional Groups' [3] and will serve to establish the notation and underlying concepts of the subsequent sections. The six points of the projective line PL(5) can be labelled by the marks of GF(5) together with a sixth symbol oo defined to be the inverse of 0. The symbol set is f~ = {0 1 2 3 4 oo}. -

A scattering set is a set of elements that is independent, and for which each element not in the scattering set is in at most one triple with a pair of elements from the scattering set. For each v = 1,3 (mod 6), we exhibit a Steiner triple system with a spanning set of minimum cardinality, and a Steiner triple system with a scattering set of maximum cardinality.
