Two Great Adventurers, Battuta and Polo, Affect the Medieval World When you take a trip, how do you record what you did? Do you take pictures, and maybe post some of them on a social media site? Or you do send postcards or emails to your family and friends about your travels? Do you keep a journal to record events as they happen? Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo traveled in a time around the 13th and 14th centuries when recording events was not as easy as it is today. Upon their return to their homes, both Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo wrote about their adventures. Their stories were very influential in stimulating trade and travel in the regions they visited. Ibn Battuta’s desire to see the lands where his fellow Muslims lived led him across Asia, Africa, and Europe and the seas. His nearly thirty years of travel began when he was twenty-one when he set off for a pilgrimage to Mecca. After that, he traveled over 75,000 miles. Ibn Battuta traveled by joining trading caravans. Caravans were bands of travelers who journeyed together for security and mutual aid. He told of his adventures when he returned home to Morocco, and those who heard his stories thought they should be written down. The sultan of Morocco commissioned a young court secretary named Ibn Juzayy to listen to Ibn Battuta’s stories and record them. It took two years to write everything down, and when they were finished, the result was the Rihla, a story of travels centered on a pilgrimage. -

NIXON’S COLLECTION Chen, Jian Andrea Published online: 1 January 2017 ABSTRACT It is generally agreed that the study of the Nestorian Cross (a kind of bronze piece believed to be an early Chinese Christian relic), has great significance both for the developing study of Jingjiao and for ethnographic studies of the Nestorian Mongol people. The most important question that we should ask, however, is, “Are these so-called Nestorian Crosses part of the Mongolian Nestorian heritage?“ In other words, before starting to interpret the pieces in question, we need to ask if the identification, made at the first step of examination, is convincing enough as a basis upon which to build the interpretation. This paper focuses on issues concerning all aspects of the concept of Nestorian Crosses, looking first into the history of such an idea, then investigating its inner logic, and finally challenging its hard evidence. It is hoped that the conclusions of this paper will initiate a paradigm shift in the current study of this topic. Introduction to the Study The Jingjiao and the Yelikewen The name “Nestorian Crosses” clearly reveals that the religious dimension has been the primary consideration in the existing identification of these items, an identification which subsumes them as relics of Chinese Nestorianism, or more accurately, of the Jingjiao and the Yelikewen. Although controversies surround the identity of Nestorianism, the most commonly accepted description is as follows: At the Ephesus Council of 431 A.D., the Patriarch Nestorius was deemed heretical and his teaching anathematized due to his insistence that Mary should be called “Christotokos (Christ-bearer)” instead of “Theotokos (God-bearer).” This insistence is thought to emphasize a distinction between Christ’s divine and human natures instead of their unity. -

At its 98th session, held at Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in June 2014, the Executive Council recognized the role of Tourism routes in fostering regional development and integration at national and international levels and encouraged the Secretary-General “to expand the action of the existing UNWTO Special Field Programme (Silk Road) to tourism routes in a broader sense with the aim of defining recommendations, exchange experiences and exploring the potential of working on new international or regional tourism routes”. (Decision 18 (XCVIII)) 2. The wealth and diversity of the Middle East’s and North Africa’s heritage, both tangible and intangible, provides extensive opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism along legendary cultural, religious and commercial routes, similar to the well-established Silk Road, which already counts upon the very active participation of Iraq and Egypt. Taking into consideration the numerous collaborative opportunities specified in the Silk Road Action Plan 2014/2015, countries with interest in developing the collaborative initiatives along the Silk Road are encouraged to engage with the 31 Member States actively cooperating within a unified platform under the aegis of the UNWTO Silk Road Programme. 3. UNWTO has gained significant experience in enhancing cooperation among Member States through its Silk Road Programme, as well as through other initiatives such as the collaboration with the European Institute for Cultural Routes, the Amber Route and the Spice Route. -

Destaca-se que muito provavelmente, os geógrafos do Islã medieval, em suas vertentes sistemática e corográfica, foram uma espécie de “ponte” que faltava na evolução do pensamento geográfico entre os gregos da Antiguidade e os precursores das grandes escolas clássicas europeias nos séculos XIX e XX. Assim sendo, o artigo apresenta uma abordagem alternativa da obra de Ibn-Battuta não só para o estudo da literatura de viagens, mas também, para a Carstologia. Abstract This study is intended to address, under a new approach, the contributions of Ibn-Battuta to the development of certain areas of geography, especially the anthropogenic use of karst as well as the cultural use of caves. Noteworthy to mention is that, most likely, the geographers from medieval Islam were a kind of missing “bridge” in the evolution of geographical thought among the ancient Greeks and the precursors of the great European classical schools in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Thus, this article presents an alternative approach to the work of Ibn-Battuta not only for the study of travel literature but also to the study of karstology. -

This course is designed to provide a basis for understanding the cultures, peoples, and traditions of the "Abode of Islam" (''Dar al-Islam'') in the early periods. Why is it that both Muslims and non-Muslims alike look to the classical Islamic past as both a resource and explanation of the present? To answer this question we will explore the collective impact of Islamic civilization on traditions of thought, religious and cultural practices, social institutions, and the course of history more generally as it emerged from its origins in seventh century Arabia through its rapid flourishing throughout the Mediterranean, Near East and beyond. In the process you will witness the inception and elaboration of a religious tradition, the rise and fall of dynasties, as well as the range of material and visual culture which they produced. Along with scholarly studies, we will read the literature of medieval travelers, the rhetoric of poets, and the accounts of caliphs, sultans and their administrators. Similarly we will consider the diversity of the people and places that have become part of the Muslim world and their lives as merchants, peasants, scholars and Sufis. The course concludes by setting the stage for the arrival of the Mongols whose sack of Baghdad put an end to the Abbasid caliphate in 1258 and laid the foundations for a new series of interactions and cultural forces that would further elaborate and change the civilization of the classical Islamic world. -

SMARANDACHE a Syrian gentleman, warriorpoet, Muslim amir, and fāris (488–584/1095–1188)—described variously as uignorancesaMa Iofbn the Munq FrankishIdh language in his Kitab al-iʿtibar (The Book of Learning (knight)—professes by Example), when recounting one of his childhood memories. Born to the Arab dynasty of the Banu Munqidh, who ruled the castle and hinterland of Shayzar on the Aṣi (or Orontes) River, Usama had grown up in close proximity to the Frankish Principality of Antioch. In the decade following the First Crusade (488–492/1095–1099), the Banu Munqidh and their Frankish neighbours engaged begun his military training. Recalling that time decades later, he remembers that in periodic raids and skirmishes. By that time, Usama was a youth and might have Tancred, the Christian ruler of Antioch (d. 506/1112), had granted a guarantee unfortunate young cavalier was actually heading into a trap that cost him his right of safe-conduct to a skilled horseman from Shayzar, a man named Hasanun. (The Ifranjī eye, but he had trusted in Tancred’s good will.) After describing the initial negotia 1 tion of safe-conduct, Usama adds that “they speak only in Frankish ( ) so we had no idea what they were saying.” To date, Usama’s statement has deterred scholars from investigating the small number of Frankish loanwords preserved in his book, it appears to leave extent of his second language acquisition in greater depth. -
