In the context of the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1, and recognising that “we cannot change the past, but are responsible for how we remember it,” the Conference addressed questions of Church relationships, patriotism and theology as they shape our common life in the Europe of the 21st Century. The leitmotif of this discussion was ‘reconciliation’ as experienced, as desired, and as a motivation for our churches’ engagement in wider society. The Conference was typically rigorous and stimulating. Set in a centre named after a hero of the German resistance to Hitler, rooted in rigorous theological and biblical thinking and conviction, it isn't inevitable that such a conference would challenge comfortable 'truths' about theology, society, history or academic disciplines. But, the participants were doing business on behalf of their churches – not in order to satisfy a theological conversation, but to bring their churches closer together compelling them to see through the lens of another culture and history, their own people and church. This cannot but make churches see differently and with a bit more questioning humility. This online version with the texts of the eighth Theological Conference is jointly released by the Church of England and the EKD. Many of the texts are in English and German. The Co- Chairs thank Elisabeth Frey and Renate Sbeghen for the substantial translation work done. Thanks also go to the Co-Secretaries, OKR Christoph Ernst and the Revd Dr Leslie Nathaniel for their editorial work and the time and energy invested in organising the conference. The Meissen Agreement was signed by the Church of England and the Evangelical Church in Germany and the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the German Democratic Republic in 1991. Under this agreement the Church of England and the EKD mutually acknowledge each other as ‘churches belonging to the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ and truly participating in the apostolic mission of the whole people of God’. They are committed to sharing a ‘common life and mission’ and taking ‘all possible steps to closer fellowship in as many areas of Christian life and witness as possible’ in the context of a common journey towards ‘full, visible unity.’ As part of the implementation of this agreement, the Church of England and the EKD continue official theological conversations in order to ‘encourage the reception of the theological consensus and convergence already achieved and to work to resolve the outstanding differences between us’. The purpose of the conference is to share Anglican and Lutheran/Reformed perspectives on the theme moving our churches on towards closer fellowship and greater unity.
