(DE)TANGLED: AN EXPLORATION OF THE HIERARCHIES IN THE NATURAL HAIR COMMUNITY by SCHILLICA HOWARD Under the Direction of Tiffany King, PhD ABSTRACT Within popular discourse, natural hair is considered to be a source of liberation where Black women can accept and nurture their natural hair texture. My research explores the points of contention in this community and the hierarchies that exist based on length of hair, curl pattern, and texture. By using product content analysis, interviews with Black women with natural hair, and analysis of social media, this thesis brings the ideal aesthetics in the natural hair community to the forefront for closer examination. Findings insist that, in the natural hair community, a curl is more attractive than a kink, longer hair more preferable than short, and that “manageable hair” is vital to Black women’s successful performances of Black femininity.

MODELING, RENDERING AND ANIMATING HUMAN HAIR by Tae-Yong Kim A Dissertation Presented to the FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (COMPUTER SCIENCE) December 2002 Copyright 2002 Tae-Yong Kim Doctoral Committee Form To be replaced with the actual form ii Acknowledgements It was a long journey to complete this thesis. The journey was truly adventurous and challenging. Sometimes there were exciting findings along the way, while other times I was so depressed and it seemed that I would never finish this journey. I must confess that without my advisor, Ulrich Neumann, I could have never escaped out of it. Whenever frustrations came, he was there to encourage me. Whenever new findings came out, he was there to congratulate. He is also the best listener I have met in my life. He was always the first person to understand my problems and ideas no matter how significant or insignificant they were. Even when it seemed that I had no clues for some problems, he never forced me his ideas, but discussed all the possibilities and better formulated the problem in his words. Often the times, I would find solutions just by talking to him, and it was a truly amazing experience. I deeply thank him for not only being the source of encouragements, but also teaching me how to become a real scholar and how to do research. I also would like to thank the other members of my thesis committee, Mathieu Desbrun and Jay Kuo.

  • The Power of Hair the Politics of Hair in a (South) African Context
The power of Hair The politics of Hair in a (South) African context Shonisani Netshia Lecturer Visual Art Department University of Johannesburg Email: [email protected] About two years ago South African musician Hugh Masekela made a public announcement that he would not take pictures with women who wear weaves or do not wear their hair in its natural state, which caused an uproar from women across the country. Local celebrity Dineo Ranaka had to wrap her head with a towel to hide her weave so she could take a picture with legendary musician ‘Bra Hugh’ stating that he could not let it kill her joy, adding she refused to let her ego rob her of a moment to smile and laugh with this “lovely” man. Ask almost any black woman and she will probably tell you that her relationship with her hair is similar to a love affair. Whether it’s the long hours spent waiting at the hair salon, the pain endured from relaxing or braiding, or the amount of money spent—hair is truly an obsession. TV and Radio personality Dineo Ranaka and legendary musician Hugh Masekela Within Black culture in South Africa hair is important, and it is synonymous with identity, many individuals use their hair to make a statement. For the longest time, black women have been made to feel ugly, insecure and ashamed because of their natural hair, while at the same time scrutinised for their choice to wear extensions, weaves or braids. In a column in one of the local newspapers Masekela explores the history behind what has influenced our ideas about 'good hair' and 'bad hair'.

The mpI act of Hair on African American Women’s Collective Identity Formation Abstract The lB ack Pride and Power Movements of the 1960s and 1970s changed the aesthetic of the larger African American community, promoting self-affirmation and reclaiming African pride. As individuals engaged in the movement, they began to internalize new meanings and understandings of themselves, leading to self- transformation and collective identity that promoted the specific political ideology and agenda of the group. In this research, the lived experiences of African American women who were emerging adults (ages 18–25) during the Civil Rights Movement from 1960 to 1974 were examined, through in-depth interviews, to understand their experiences with wearing natural hairstyles during this time.
