While Leela is busy saving single-celled organisms, Fry, as per usual, joins a tin-foil-wearing secret society and attempts to thwart a mysterious species from destroying all life in the universe. "Futurama" focuses on the life of Philip Fry (Billy West), a 25-year-old pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself on December 31, 1999 and wakes up 1,000 years later with a fresh start at life - and a "diverse" new group of friends including Turanga Leela (Katey Sagal), a tough, but lovely one-eyed alien, and Bender (John DiMaggio), a robot who possesses human characteristics and flaws. The show also features guest stars such as Sarah Silverman, Hank Azaria, Bob Odenkirk, Pamela Anderson, Beatrice Arthur, Lucy Liu, Beck and Coolio. "Futurama" aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003 and the series consists of 72 episodes. It was nominated five years in-a-row and won three Emmys, including the award for "Outstanding Animated Program" in 2002. All-new episodes of "Futurama" will appear on COMEDY CENTRAL in mid-2010. Greenwald Appalachian State University Introduction Futurama [1] is an animated science ﬁction comedy with math, science, or programming jokes in almost every television episode. In the same way that history can provide context to mathematics in the classroom, the rich mathematical history of the show’s writers and the stories of their writing motivations can engage students. A combination of comedy references from the show and quotes from the writers is especially eﬀective in helping to alleviate math anxiety and motivate students to learn and connect to mathematics. In this article we will examine numerous Futurama activities for the classroom, including discussions related to the writers and the representation of mathematics in popular culture, as well as activities related to humorous Futurama math references, including computational number theory and geometry. Students can become so focused on the present that they perceive mathematics as “closed, dead, emotionless, all discovered... [Teachers] can rescue students from the island of mathematics and relocate them on the mainland of life that contains mathematics that is open, alive, full of emotion, and always interesting” [3].
