Winter Guard National Competition On March 25, the A-Guard (JV) earned a score of 85.72 and 1st place in their division! The Open Guard (Varsity) earned a score of 86.00 and 2nd place in their divi- sion! Color Guard pictured left.

The Year in Record The 52nd edition of the El Viejo Yearbook was re- leased on Friday, June 1 at a Pep Assembly during tutorial. The book’s theme, “We Are,” guided the content of stories and photographs that are featured in the book and aimed to truly answer the question of who we are here at Mission. The 400 page, full color yearbook features stories on student life, sports, performing arts, senior ads, class portraits and various other features that summarize this year at Mission Viejo High School. Our yearbook won first place at Josten’s Yearbook Camp and the Josten’s National Award of Excellence. The yearbook staff are pictured right.

MVHS Humanities About Town Our Humanities Department took a field trip this past spring to visit the La Brea Tar Pits, LACMA, Griffith Obser- vatory, with a dinner at The Grove and Farmers Market. They rounded out the evening with a performance of “School of Rock” at the Pantages The- atre. It was quite the cultural experience.

Mission Mindfulness

Mindful Goals Mission is moving towards a more mindful campus. Research has shown that incorporating mindfulness into education has been linked to improving academic, social, and emotional learning by empowering students to become more resilient learners. Mindfulness teaches the difference between handling work and life in harmony rather than simply coping with the daily stresses of life. Mission is dedicated to teaching a variety of skills to support every student no matter their level of need. It is one more way Mission strives to build, support, and care for our Diablo family.

Mindfulness Day The 1st Annual Mindfulness Day was held on May 29th during tutorial and lunch. There were a variety of sta- tions with students busy making glitter jars, listening to mindfulness apps, cro- cheting, completing art and crafts, practicing yoga and visiting with the therapy dogs. We received positive feedback about how differ- ent it felt out on campus. It was a joy seeing students interacting, taking part in activities with other stu- dents and making memo- ries. Thank you to our Guid- ance Counselor Mr. Steve Uthus, teachers, staff, and volunteers who made this a reality!

MVHS AVID College Bound

We have several students heading out of state this year with the as- sistance of scholarships. The AVID program works hard to prepare students who are most likely the first in their families to attend col- lege to be college-ready with efficient study and resource skills. Though many of our students were accepted by four year colleges, quite a few elected to start their college career at Saddleback after enrolling in the Counseling 100 course-College Success on our cam- pus. Several of our AVID students received the Saddleback Communi- ty College Promise Scholarship, which promises to pay for their first two years of college after which they will transfer to a four year col- lege to finished their degree.

AVID Student Spotlight We’re very excited to share that our AVID Senior Stand Out, Joan- na Villalobos, won the highly competitive Angels Scholarship! This is huge honor, as they will cover the cost of her education at Biola University for all 4 years! It is also a wonderful opportunity for her to network through the Angels organization since she will also serve as a mentor and am- bassador for them during her time as an undergrad. Joanna’s hard work is a great example to all our current AVID students to stay strong and keep working to- wards the future.

AVID Senior Standout recipients Joanna Villalobos and Eric Cubacub with SVUSD Board President, Amanda Morrell, Principals Terri Gusiff of ETHS and Tricia Osborne of MVHS, and Superintendent, Dr. Crystal Turner.

World Clubfoot Day Kid's Fun Run

On Saturday, June 9th the Varsity Pep Squad team had the oppor- tunity to serve the community by helping young kids with clubfoot participate in an Olympic themed fun run. The girls cheered on families during a parade, stunted at the finish line of the sprint race and assisted children in other sporting type events. The pep squad team also served at a booth putting on glitter tattoos to all who wanted one! The girls had a great time making connections with other kids and families and are excited to do this event again in the future.
