    “How can a narrative designer encourage empathy in players?” Many video games seek to create a meaningful relationship between the player and NPCs in their in-game worlds. This can be a romantic, platonic or familial. Narrative designers want to create the illusion of a real emotional bond with a fictional game character, even though many of the stories these relationships exist in are linear. In screen-writing, there are distinct methods to generate empathy and engagement from the audience for characters on screen. However, players have agency, it is by the nature of the medium that they are able to shape and have a meaningful effect on the in-game world they are inhabiting. Viewers of film and literature do not have this ability. Thus, a problem arises. What is applicable from the language of film to generate these relationships in a medium where there is uncertainty about how a player will act? How does a narrative designer approach this issue? “What is taken to be real elicits emotions. What does not impress one as true and unavoidable elicits no emo- tion or a weaker one.”1 How can this scenario be avoided in games? Before the first campaign, Marisha played another game with the same Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer. Also, before the first campaign, she was in another pen and paper RPG game with fellow voice actor and player Taliesin Jaffe. She also played a countertop version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Marisha helped Matt to conduct the first pre-stream session of the campaign, which later became a critical role that was to be a one-off game. She did not play as a character in this particular session. Joining the campaign, Marisha appointed Keilit's lowest statistician in Charisma and played her as very introverted, which worked well because Marisha didn't know the other players well and decided to reflect that uncertainty in her character. The critical role of 'editing source' Marisha is honored to be the first player to roll the natural 20 on a critical role, which she rolled to test performance while in the shape of a bear trying to save Trinket from a bar fight.

One man who needs no introduction in gaming is, of course, Troy Baker. Troy Baker is truly one of the most unique and gifted actors to have graced the gaming industry. His success in recent years has sent him to unparalleled status and recognition among the gaming community and critics. I have to admit it: he has my immediate attention when he is attached to a project – that’s how influential his presence has become. Troy’s résumé boasts his ability to bring a distinct personality behind each of his performances and, in the process, leave most people mesmerised by his capabilities. In most people’s eyes, including me, 2013 was the year of Troy Baker, with the actor assuming the role of Joel (The Last of Us), Booker DeWitt (BioShock Infinite) and the Joker (Batman: Arkham Origins).

This show first launched in 2015, and, after one hundred and fifteen episodes spanning nearly four hundred and fifty hours of content, reached the conclusion of its first major narrative arc in October 2017. In this time, the show has attracted a dedicated fanbase of thousands.
