Doernberga, and Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp, MDa aNational Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Abstract Background—Cerebral palsy (CP) is defined by its nonprogressive features. Therefore, a standard definition and list of progressive disorders to exclude would be useful for CP monitoring and epidemiologic studies. Methods—We reviewed the literature on this topic to 1) develop selection criteria for progressive brain disorders of childhood for public health surveillance purposes, 2) identify categories of disorders likely to include individual conditions that are progressive, and 3) ascertain information about the relative frequency and natural history of candidate disorders. Results—Based on 19 criteria that we developed, we ascertained a total of 104 progressive brain disorders of childhood, almost all of which were Mendelian disorders. Discussion—Our list is meant for CP surveillance programs and does not represent a complete catalog of progressive genetic conditions, nor is the list meant to comprehensively characterize disorders that might be mistaken for cerebral -

On the Inheritance of Hand and Foot Anomalies in Six Families OLA JOHNSTON AND RALPH WALDO DAVIS Department of Biology, North Texas State College, Denton, Texas INTRODUCTION Malformations of the hands and feet are common and of many kinds. Ac- cording to Gates (1946) there probably are more abnormalities of the hands and feet than of any other part of the body, with the exception of the eye. It is true that some hand and foot anomalies are the result of accident and disease but it is equally true that many are the result of variation in heredity. The extent to which the latter is true and the mode of inheritance of those variations which have some genetic basis are questions which are not com- pletely answered. Hence when an opportunity presented itself to study a number of different hand and foot anomalies which appeared to have a he- reditary basis, it seemed worthwhile to investigate them and to present the findings. The malformations which are included are syndactyly and split hand and foot, polydactyly, and brachydactyly. Each will be considered more or less independently and in the order indicated. A BRIEF REVIEW OF LITERATURE 1. Syndactyly and Split Hand and Foot Syndactyly is the condition in which two or more fingers or toes are adherent or are more or less completely grown together. Split hand and foot (also called lobster claw) is a deformity in which the central digits of the hands and/or feet are lacking. It may represent an extreme variant of syndactyly. According to Lewis (1909) a description of split hand and foot is difficult because of the great variation in the deformity even within the same family. -

Garmash KHARKIV NATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, KHARKIV, UKRAINE ABSTRACT Introduction: The prevalence of soft tissue and hard tooth tissuediseases in the oral cavity and the morphofunctional disorders of craniofacial complex, require attention ofspecialistsin various branches of medicine. Scientists began to pay attention to metabolic and other violations that have occurred in the fetal development and led to the occurrence of certain changes in the dental status of the child. The aim of thisresearch is to study the features of the dental health condition in the children of Northeast of Ukraine, who were born with macrosomia during the period of mixed dentition. The study takes into account intrauterine body length growth acceleration, intrauterine obesity or well-balanced acceleration of both the body weight and length gain. Materials and methods: Thirty 6.5–11-year-old children with fetal macrosomia were examined (MainGroup). A Comparison Group was comprised of sixteen children, whose weight-height parameters at birth were normal (fetal normosomia). All children in the Main group were split into four subgroups in accordance with weight-height parameters at birth using the V. I. Grischenko and his co-authors’ harmonious coefficient. The evaluation of the hygiene status of the oral cavity, the dental caries intensity evaluation, and the quantitative analysis of minor salivary gland secretion have been performed. The prevalence of dentoalveolar abnormalities was evaluated. Results: The highest values of caries intensity were recorded in macrosomic-at-birth children born with harmonious (well-balanced) intrauterine development, with intrauterine obesity and increased body length, or with intrauterine obesity and an average body length. -
