There can be no doubt that our wonderful students from High School are the equal of students from anywhere in the region, in so many areas. Congratulations to Erin Kelly and Claudia Calci of Year 10 for their wonderful efforts in the Quota Weekly Programs Club Student of the Year competition. You did the school, your families, and yourselves proud! HOMEWORK CENTRE

As we head into winter, and the mornings become darker and EVERY THURSDAY 2PM IN colder, it is very easy for us to hit snooze when the alarm goes off, THE LIBRARY and go back to sleep. Over the last week or so there has been a noticeable increase in the number of absences and lateness among AFTERNOON TEA PROVIDED a significant number of students. Every class or day that is missed has a negative impact on our learning. It makes it that much BREAKFAST CLUB harder to catch up and to stay on top of what we need to do. This is especially true if you are already missing lessons because you EVERY TUESDAY & are on excursions or representing the school at sport, or taking THURSDAY part in one of the many extra-curricular activities that are offered here at Lake. Therefore it is important that when that alarm goes 7am – 7:45am off, you hop out of bed and get ready to embrace the day, and all of the wonderful opportunities that go with it. The Breakfast Club Program is

These are rigorously enforced by Parking Inspectors who visit the school on a regular basis to monitor this. EVERY TUESDAY MORNING Well done to Year 11 on the way you conducted yourselves during your first taste of senior exams. The feedback from your 7am – 8am teachers has been very positive. PBL Promoting Positive Behaviour for Learning

As a PBL school LIHS rewards students who are respectful, responsible and safe in every setting.

Our school values:

RESPECT ⎜RESPONSIBILITY ⎜SAFETY

Term 1 saw a strong focus on our PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Safety.

We show RESPECT by being tolerant and accepting of everyone, being polite and considerate of others, using appropriate language and wearing the school uniform.

We show RESPONSIBILITY by being at the right place, right time, staying on task in class and being prepared, following procedures and instructions including putting rubbish in the bin and caring for our surroundings.

We show SAFETY by following instructions, following the 'hands off' policy and having a smoke free zone.

Weekly PBL Focus Values throughout Term 2 will continue to remain a high priority in all settings. VIVO League Table update – Term 2 Specific PBL lessons will also occur to encourage active learning in classrooms around the school. The VIVO League Table shows the top 10 VIVO earners for the term. What’s happening at Lake High?

Child Studies

On Monday 22nd May, Year 10 Child Studies went on an excursion to Hospital. They visited the Maternity Ward, and saw the new facilities in the Birthing Centre. The midwives spoke to the students about becoming a nurse, how to achieve it and recommended it as a career choice. The students listened to the information about breastfeeding, antenatal classes, and were able to ask questions on a range of topics. Overall, it was a worthwhile excursion, and the students represented the school well with their excellent behaviour.

The Lake Sports Pages

With the Greek gods Apollo, Hermes and Nike watching on (and their buddy Zeus, the god of clouds, rain, thunder and lightning for holding the weather for 24 hours for us), our students jostled and jogged to compete in the 2017 LIHS Athletics carnival. Our students celebrated a day of friendly competition, the first that this school has held in three years, due to continued rain cancellations. What a day it was, with a cloudless sky and perfect conditions for competing in the various track and, field events, which were organised for our students to participate in. A very big thank you must be extended to Mr. Chaseling and Mr. Dunkerley for building our track and field area for us as well as all our staff who assisted in the various roles that they completed.

Our student body were tremendous on the day. I was approached by several staff regarding our students behaviour and their sense of enjoyment! Our students demonstrated excellent behaviour. At this stage, we cannot announce our age champions or the winning house as we are running high jump events at the school next week and these points may determine winners because the competition is that close!

Once again, the speed and stamina of Mr. Chaseling (pictured below as Captain America) was too great in the 400m event with him comfortably leading, then graciously allowing Ibs Elomar the glory of the win. Congratulations to all our students who won prizes on the day. We had a voucher up for grabs for each year group as well as footballs, soccer balls, NRL packs and much more as prizes for our students who competed in events throughout the day. Next year, we will have more prizes, please encourage your kids to come along.

The Southern Illawarra Zone carnival will not be held until Week 8, June 13 so those students who have made this team (you all have your permission notes, but if you are unsure, please speak to Mr. Chaseling, as I will be on leave) will have plenty of time to train and get their technique perfected. Please speak to a PE teacher if you would like some assistance or training tips.

Once again, thank you to all for an outstanding day and we look forward to running our carnivals again next year.

Science News

Year 7 students have been learning about the classification (scientific grouping) of living things, and have been particularly interested in the classification of animals. Using the same characteristics that biologists do, students examined a range of specimen and determined which Kingdom, Phylum, Class and Species groups they belong to.

Marine Studies

Year 9 Marine Studies cooked up a storm on Monday during their double period. To finish up the 'Food from the Sea' unit of work, students prepared a crumbed fish and salad.

Saving Chloe Saxby 2017 Raffle

Chloe Saxby is a beautiful, loving and affectionate little girl from Woonona. Chloe has been diagnosed with an extremely rare and terminal brain disease, Vanishing White Matter, and her family are in a race against time to save her life. Currently there is no cure or treatment available and life expectancy is only 5-10 years from disease onset. Promising research is taking place to stop the disease in its tracks; however, progress is hampered by funding. With only seven cases in Australia there is no government funding, it is left up to the families affected to raise these funds.

Brave little Chloe has suffered over 50 seizures since Christmas, which is a sign of the deterioration of Chloe's white matter. This is a stark reminder that there is no time to waste.

The Big News Now: The scientific team has made recent discoveries that will allow them to move closer to the development of an actual treatment. A number of potential drug compounds are being evaluated, however due to lack of funding only one of these can be advanced to the next phase. We urgently need to raise funds for this next phase of testing.

How you can Help?

Chloe's family has launched a raffle with some amazing prizes to be won, including a Holiday to Fiji with business class flights, a Maldives Holiday staying in a luxurious overwater bungalow, flights to Hawaii, and some great gadgets. Limited tickets are available and the raffle is drawn 1st July.

Get your raffle tickets here >>> https://www.rafflelink.com.au/scsr2017

Or if you would like to help out by taking a book to sell please contact [email protected]

All proceeds will be used to accelerate the cure in the hope it is ready for Chloe and the current generation of children suffering with VWM Disease.

Thank you very much for your support.

Determined, Hopeful and Eternally Grateful Nyree Saxby (Chloe's Mum)
