Despite of the colonial influence, many African countries including Uganda have preserved their natural and cultural heritage in terms of social tradition and documentary heritage with little emphasis on the integration of the functions of the libraries, archives and museum. A survey on selected institutions that are involved in the collection, storage, preservation and promotion on the use of natural, historical, cultural documentary heritage in Uganda was conducted. The data was obtained through interviews of key persons that were selected purposively from those institutions, attending the consultative meetings with staff at the National Library of Uganda, Uganda Museum, National Archives and East African School of Library and Information Science, department of Records and Archives Management. The paper also attempted to review the literature about the subject. Findings indicated that there is lack of a strategy in co- ordinating the functions of libraries, archives and museum in documenting and preserving the documentary heritage in Uganda.

It was written for the natives of Uganda, as a description of the journey and what was seen on it, and everything is described from an entirely native point of view, and not with the idea of any translation into English.     1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Through my active involvement in Buganda’s music education over the last 12 years, I have familiarised myself with challenges on Uganda’s music education. I have noticed traditional music losing appeal to popular taste. European and American music have been assimilated and modified to suit native appetites. In addition, I have become aware of the demands inflicted upon music educators in trying to deliver music instruction in conditions with lack of funds, shortage of resources, inadequate instruction facilities, a shortage of adequate music educators and lack of a proper music curriculum. Modernisation and urbanisation have also influenced the music scene in Uganda to the extent that what is taught in school as compared to what is consumed in the communities outside the school are two divergent forces. Subsequently, I have decided to investigate music and musical arts education as a relevant role player in Buganda’s education. I feel that music and music education can provide a culturally relevant education for Buganda and bridge the gap between 'pupils' own music and prescribed school music. 'Education in Uganda is administered by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and all districts, schools, provinces and colleges follow the same curriculum as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Sports. However, even though I will now and then refer to the whole country and its various districts, for the purposes of this study, I will focus on music education in Buganda. 1.1.1 Historical background Buganda is the kingdom of 52 clans of the Baganda people and the largest of the traditional kingdoms in present-day Uganda.

Box 7062, KAMPALA, UGANDA Abstract This paper presents the findings and experiences regarding the Uganda’s buildings history, architectural education and production of building spaces in Uganda during the nineteenth and twentieth century. It investigates how local low- tech, attitudes, norms and values in Uganda architecture have been presented and represented in changing high-tech innovations, social structures, which they, in turn, can be seen to reproduce. The starting point is that the shift in building space itself reflect patterns of contemporary technological, socio-economic, cultural and power relations in Uganda in general and globalization in particular. It would seem, therefore, that the results of this paper lead us to attempt to account for previous technical knowledge dispositions, specific to economic, social and cultural history, in Uganda and the wider humanity. In other words, it would seem that the past local technology has left its mark on both recent and present activities and attitudes to building spaces. With effort from the existing building space groups and institutions of higher learning, the trends of in building spaces will continue to change but that there is need to conserve those unique historic buildings.
