The first envoys of the Church Missionary Society arrived at King Mutesa’s court on June 30, 1877. After eight decades, and despite severe persecution, Uganda ultimately became one of the most successful mission fields in the world. By 1914, nearly the whole of the area we now know as Uganda was evangelized, largely due to the work of its indigenous teachers and with support from a few European missionaries. Prior to the formation of the Church of the Province of Uganda, Rwanda-Burundi and Boga-Zaire in 1961, the Anglican Church in Uganda was a joint venture of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and the so-called Native Anglican Church (NAC). The General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society / Native Anglican Church served as administrator for the Bishop and as the Archdeacon of the Uganda Diocese. Description of the Papers This collection forms part of the Archives of the Church of Uganda housed at Uganda Christian University. The records have been digitized and made available in both digital and microfilm format. The other sections of the Archives of the Church of Uganda include the archives of the Bishop of Uganda CMS/NAC (UCU-RG1), General Secretary CMS/NAC (UCU-RG3), Financial Secretary CMS/NAC (UCU-RG4), Archbishop's Office Church of Uganda (UCU-RG5), Provincial Secretary COU (UCU-RG6), Mothers Union (UCU-RG7). The archives of the General Secretary CMS/NAC are divided into four series: I. Administrative Records, II. General File/ Correspondences, III. Activities/Programs/Institutions, IV. Financial/Legal Documents. Because the General Secretary was the administrator for the Bishop, the records in this group are complementary to those found in the Office of the Bishop of Uganda and the Education Secretary General.
