Progress Report 1 Renovation Progress Report One March 2010 Table of Contents Chair’s Message Chair’s Message ........................................................... 1 Over the years I have often been greeted during or after a Worldcon by being asked how my Worldcon was. I’ve Renovation Staff List ................................................ 2 always loved this because a con that covers the entirety of science fiction can be special in dozens of ways. Some Facilities Division ........................................................ 3 quick memories: • As my friend David Levine won his Hugo in Exhibits Division .......................................................... 3 Anaheim, everyone from Portland broke out Evolution of “Rennie” ................................................. 5 screaming from the sheer joy of it, • I have had my hand kissed by Gardner Dozois and Publications Division ................................................. 5 Robert Silverberg, • I have watched my teenage daughters help Ray Special Guest: Tricky Pixie ...................................... 6 Bradbury with his autographing while telling him what big fans they are. Smoking in Reno .......................................................... 6 There have been tons of other things: exhibits like the The Bid According to Rick ....................................... 7 Batmobile, masquerade costumes that blew me away and listening to some of my favorite writers read their work. Guest of Honor: Tim Powers ................................... 8 When I think about my memories, the things that make my Worldcon are the personal experiences. You can meet the Reno in 2011 Bid Accounts ....................................... 11 great people in all aspects of the field, listen to them and Memberships ................................................................ 12 talk to them. We hope to bring opportunities for your own personal experiences to happen to you at Renovation. Types of Membership ............................................... 12 One of the best personal experiences at a con and a Worldcon is great for this, is meeting friends you never Installment Plan ........................................................... 12 knew you had. Membership List (February 28, 2010) ............... 13 I write this right after attending what was a new con for me. While there, I stopped another redhead, this one dressed as an Edwardian lady on safari, to ask about her pith helmet with the lace brim. I now know where to get one and we had a lovely chat about all you can get at an Renovation army surplus store. I still covet her leather WWI ammo The 69th World Science Fiction Convention bag. Reno, Nevada USA August 17–21, 2011 Some of my other favorite good times come from Guests of Honor working on something for the con and seeing it through Ellen Asher - Charles N. Brown * or submitting an idea and seeing it come to fruition. In Tim Powers - Boris Vallejo Anaheim, where I worked in the facilities department, I enjoyed telling Connie Willis that the security guard, ( * in memoriam ) who hears hundreds of speakers, came up to tell me she Special Guests was the wittiest person he’d ever heard. Now is the time Tricky Pixie to jump in and help with your ideas and your time. The Worldcon will be better for it. [email protected] www.renovationsf.org I am honored to chair a Worldcon because it’s an event · that has offered me some of the best experiences of my life. We all hope that we can help put together an Front Image: Freedom by Boris Vallejo ©Copyright 2006 atmosphere that will make your Renovation Worldcon as vivid and full of new experiences as my own Worldcons Postal Memberships should be mailed to: have been. From the Chair OK, here we go—the first Official Progress Report from Worldcon 76 in San Jose! The World Science Fiction Convention is, to me, the World’s Fair of fandom. No other event brings together fans and creators, regardless of genre or medium, under one “big tent” with the face-to-face intimacy of Worldcon. There are lots of big pop culture conventions (quite a few bigger than Worldcon), but none of them feature the “everybody creates this event together” culture that makes Worldcon such a unique international gathering. Just last month at Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, Finland, I had the privilege of announcing our final two Guests of Honor, artist John Picacio and musician Frank Hayes, who join GoHs Spider Robinson, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Pierre and Sandy Pettinger, and our posthumous Ghost and gHost of Honor Edgar Pangborn and Bob Wilkins. We look forward to sharing their talents in person with you next August, and I’m sure they are working on cunning plans with my Program and Exhibits divisions already.
