During the early years of football, the death of Rome native Richard Von Albade Gammon during a game between the University of Georgia and the University of Virginia in 1897 nearly ended the sport in the state after a public outcry denouncing football as being too violent. Von Gammon enrolled at Georgia in 1896 and played on the university’s fourth team under the legendary coach Glenn “Pop” Warner, leading the team to an unbeaten record as a quarterback. The next year, under coach Charles McCarthy, in Georgia’s third game of the season on Oct. 30 against Virginia in Atlanta, Gammon went in for a tackle and after the pile unscrambled, remained motionless on the field. The next morning at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Gammon died due to a severe concussion. Within days, while many mourned his loss, others rose up to call for a ban on football in Georgia. The university canceled the remainder of the playing season as a bill was rushed through the General Assembly to outlaw football. The bill passed Richard Von Albade Gammon and came before Gov.
