PRESIDENT, DR. DONALD DOWLESS

Dr. Donald V. Dowless became Shorter University’s 19th president effective June 1, 2011. “Dr. Donald Dowless has strong credentials in the areas of Christian commitment, higher education administration, fundraising, and ministry,” said Shorter University Trustee Chairman Dr. Nelson Price in announcing his appointment. “The integration of faith and learning is the foundation of his accomplishments as he has risen through the academic ranks,” Dr. Price added. “He knows academia inside and out, and what is most impressive about Dr. Dowless is his love for the Lord and his desire to honor Him with all his heart, soul, and mind. His passion for seeing students grow strong in the Christian faith and for knowing their academic disciplines is evident. “We are grateful for the progress Shorter University made under Dr. Newman’s leadership, and we are sure to keep the momentum of success under our new leader, Dr. Donald Dowless.” Dr. Dowless came to Shorter from North Greenville University, where he served for five years as vice president for academics. Having earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Baylor University in 1989, Dr. Dowless began his academic career as an assistant professor of religion at Charleston Southern University. He rose through the ranks by becoming chair of the Department of Religion, then dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and then associate provost. In June 2006, he was named vice president for academic affairs at North Greenville University. At both North Greenville and Charleston Southern, Dr. Dowless served on SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation leadership teams and helped lead the two institutions through successful 10-year reaffirmation processes. He also helped acquire the largest single scholarship endowment at Charleston Southern, approximately $500,000 from Charleston Heights Baptist Church. Throughout his career, Dr. Dowless has supported athletic programs as avenues for education and ministry. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson enters his fifth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics. Since being named Director of Athletics in 2007, Peterson has guided Shorter’s athletic department into unprecedented levels of success. His decision-making and expertise have propelled Shorter to record finishes in the NACDA-Learfield Director’s Cup in each of the last four years, including a program-best third place finish following the 2010-2011 academic year. Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2010 and is currently spearheading Shorter’s exciting transition to NCAA Division II. Since 2007-2008, Shorter has won five national championships and 19 conference championships. Last year, Shorter won the NAIA Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field national championships -- the first two NAIA national championships in school history -- while the competitive program completed a three-peat at the NCA Cheerleading National Championships in April. In Peterson’s tenure, Shorter has had 263 All-Conference honorees and 128 student-athletes honored as All-Americans. While the athletic achievements are numerous, the academic accomplishments and track record of community involvement of Shorter’s student-athletes clearly embodies his vision of excellence. Shorter’s number of NAIA Scholar-Athletes has grown from five in 2007-2008 to a record 28 in 2010-2011. Overall, 71 Shorter student-athletes have earned the title of NAIA Scholar-Athlete over the past four years while a total of 345 have been named to their respective Conference All-Academic teams. Shorter has boasted the Southern States Athletic Conference’s Female Honor Student-Athlete in each of the past three years -- Becca Thomas (2009), Whitni Tucker (2010) and Kelly Ellison (2011) Prior to taking the helm of the Hawks’ athletic program, -- and have seen Tucker and Ellison named the NAIA’s National Peterson served three years in the position of recruiting coordinator Emil S. 2011 OUTLOOK

By Jim O’Hara

As it enters its seventh year of existence, the Shorter University football program has grown to the point where it has some history from which to draw. Three years ago, when the 2008 Hawks capped a rapid rise into the national spotlight by claiming a Mid-South Conference West Division Championship and berth into the national playoffs, they did so with a team that started the season with an untested quarterback, a young set of backs, an experienced offensive line and a defense loaded with potential. Ironically, the 2011 team exhibits those same qualities and the current edition of Football Hawks would like nothing more than to better the championship effort of that 2008 squad. Yet for head coach Phil Jones and this year’s team, the history that is most pressing is the program’s most recent – the many lessons learned in 2010 when Shorter saw its streak of four straight winning seasons come to an end after a 5-6 campaign. That history provides the Hawks with more fuel for than anything as they head into what will be Shorter’s final opportunity to win an NAIA title. “In fairness to the 2010 team, it was forced to play teams like [NCAA Division II power] West Alabama and [NCAA FCS] Georgia State that gave us two losses right away,” Jones said about Shorter’s first two games of the 2010 season. “We have never played two top-caliber teams like that back-to-back to start a season. “But the turnover issue was more notable and more of a reason why our team didn’t have a winning season,” added the coach, referencing the team’s 33 fumbles, 20 of which were recovered by the opponent. “I don’t know a program that hasn’t Sophomores Kenny Foster (above) and C.J. That excitement and motivation, combined with a strong sense “Quarterback is a very important position, but we’re fortunate to of determination, could very well allow Shorter to leave one final have a large number of high caliber kids there.” statement in the NAIA history book. The heir apparent under center is senior David Byrd, who has “This is our last opportunity to play for a championship in the served as the backup to Williams for the last three years. Special Teams

Shorter returns some key special teams personnel this fall. Back to handle placekicking duties are junior David Guilford sophomore Troy Postell. Freshman Ben Fendig will challenge for some reps as well. While he contends for playing time at quarterback, Thacker is already a proven punter and is determined to improve on his 37.6 yards per punt average – his longest was a school record 75-yard boot – from 2010. Not to be overlooked is the return of the Hawks’ long snapper, senior Derik Cooper, who has assumed long snapping duties the past two seasons. Back to field punts will be Morten, who last year was ranked No. 6 in nation with a 12.5-yard return average and set a school record with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown against West Alabama. Shorter has a three-headed monster to return kickoffs in Jones, Appleton and Collins. Jones found himself handling 14 kickoffs last year and posted a 19.1 average, Appleton had just seven runbacks but made the most of them boasting a 30.7 average, and Collins Senior linebacker Daniel Hazard could end up in the top five of had nine returns for an 11.6 average. 2010 REVIEW

A year that began with a pair of losses against tough opponents was punctuated with setbacks in key showdowns and ended with two defeats that were even tougher to take – it all combined to leave the 2010 Shorter University football team falling short of giving the young program its fifth straight winning season. Yet while he shared his players’ disappointments, Hawks’ head coach Phil Jones was convinced that the team achieved success beyond all expectations. “We did make a run at it,” Jones said as he looked back on a season in which the Hawks, who started the year overcoming back-to-back defeats to become a contender in the Mid-South Conference West Division race, were forced to settle for a 5-6 record after a series of self-inflicted mistakes. “What enabled us to do so was their determination and how hard they played. I’m so grateful to be here and to be around these young men and I thank the Lord every day for that.” While they hold optimism for what lies ahead – Shorter returns all but five starters in 2011 – the young Hawks do so having experienced some growing pains. “What was disappointing was not being able to win the close games,” Jones said about the four Mid-South Conference West Division defeats Shorter suffered, all of them coming by 10 points or less. “It makes it tough to measure ourselves when we’re not able to win those games. 53 2011 FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

REMEMBERING DENTRIS “DOOLEY” MATHIS

Dear Hawks Family, Supporters, and Alumni:

On April 8, 2011, Shorter University lost Dentris “Dooley” Mathis to a tragic death. Dentris was a member of the Shorter baseball team and a founding member of Shorter University Football. As a former teammate, friend and roommate, I feel that there is so much we can do to remember him. Dentris was a great athlete, but more importantly, a great person. He always lit up the room when he walked in and had a contagious smile. There are so many things about Dentris that will be missed, but none that will be forgotten.

In the brief three or four days following his death, the College of Business, Coach Phil Jones, Coach Matt Larry and the Athletic Department named an endowment in Dentris’ name. The endowment now has the task of raising $25,000 over the next five years. This endowment will allow a first generation student-athlete the opportunity to continue their education at Shorter University. Although Dentris will never walk onto the field again, his memory can remain on that field every game through this scholarship, provided by your kind donation.

Will you please celebrate Dentris’ life by giving to this scholarship? A few contributions have already been made to kick off this scholarship fund. Please consider giving something.

The football and baseball team will hold special ceremonies to honor Dentris Mathis during Homecoming Weekend in October 2011. The DM28 stickers on the football helmets are in memory of Dentris. Please make plans to attend this event. Let’s continue to visit the Hill and perhaps meet the student that will have a Shorter University athletic experience because of your contribution to this scholarship! We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Lee Rogers, Cliff Flagello & Lacey Herring
