Information about Rocky Creek Scout Camp and Landsborough. Landsborough was named for the British-born explorer William Landsborough, who was the first European to cross Australia north to south. The earliest European settlers arrived in the area in 1871. Originally called Mellum Creek ("mellum" is an Aboriginal word for "volcano"), it dates from 1871 when Isaac Burgess erected a slab hut with bark roof as "port of call" for Cobb and Co coaches stopping for refreshments and a change of horses. Mellum Creek Post Office opened on 23 January 1881. It was renamed Landsborough in 1890. In the past Landsborough was one of the larger towns of the Sunshine Coast having a large logging industry. In 1912, the town became the administrative centre for the Landsborough Shire after separating from the Caboolture Shire. Advertisements for the September 1927 auction of land in the Landsborough Township Estate emphasized the prosperity and fast-growing nature of the town. Landsborough Shire merged into the in 1968. Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall, 2008 The Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall was celebrated with a stump capping ceremony on 24 November 1923 involving Member of the Legislative Assembly for Murrumba, Richard Warren. The hall was officially opened on 4 May 1924 by Queensland Governor, Matthew Nathan. St John's Anglican Church was dedicated on 13 October 1956 by Archbishop Reginald Halse. It closed circa 1987. The building was sold for removal. At the 2011 census, Landsborough had a population of 3,706. In the 2016 census, Landsborough had a population of 3,812 people.

Landsborough today is a popular tourism stop off due to the fact it is the first stop and is often regarded as the Gateway to the hinterland Tourist Trail. Landsborough today features parks and playgrounds, such as Pioneer park. There is a museum located in the former Landsborough Shire Council Chambers which contains a large number of historical artefacts from the local area. Landsborough's economy mostly derives from small businesses, with many cafés and small eateries. The Landsborough Shire Museum houses artefacts from the pre-colonial and the early pioneer years from the area of the former Landsborough shire and the modern- day Caloundra City region. Of note are the artefacts belonging to explorer William Landsborough. 2

Presidents Ramblings. Hi Fellow Coolum Caravan Club Members. A great rally at Boonah, clear skies, plenty to do, good company supported by the attendance of Life Members to our club, Graham and Joyce. Capably run by Rally Masters Tony, Marg, John, and Janet an excellent time was had by all. Our next Club Rally is a location close to home, Landsborough Scout Camp, and at the time of writing this newsletter, Rally Masters have not stepped forward to direct the rally. It is not an arduous task; in fact, it’s rewarding. If you haven’t Rally Mastered recently, please put your hand up and help us conduct the rally. Rally Masters are still required for the July Rally at Maaroom. Club Elections are conducted at our AGM held at the June General Meeting. We have nominations for President, Secretary, Treasurer, Rally Co-Ordinators, Editor, Eumundi Gate Co-Ordinator. The positions still looking for a nomination are Vice President and Assistant Secretary, Treasurer. So please, approach Secretary Arthur for the appropriate paper work at the upcoming General Meeting for a nomination form. Our Club Treasurer, Sue reminds members that membership fees are due. $50.00 is the fee required for you to remain Club Members so please, approach Sue with cash in hand or forward the payment to BBS 124 079, Acc. No. 90572481. On the News front, Steve, Glenda, and Janet could be home around end of May. Bill & Lisa are on their way around Australia, as are Rod and Marg. We wish them all safe travels on their respective adventures. A few club members are having treatment for their health issues, whilst others are convalescing. We wish you a speedy recovery, so we may continue to enjoy your company in good health. Stay safe everyone, see you all at the upcoming General Meeting.

RALLY CO-ORDINATORS NEWS

Hi Everyone.

Did the good old Easter bunny find you? We even found some eggs on our caravan step plus a few more inside so we have enjoyed lots of chocolate. Hope you did too.

We also hope those that attended the April rally at Boonah had a very enjoyable time and that Anzac Day celebrations in the town were also well attended. It is a special time for all Australians and those Kiwis amongst us. Also, a big thank you to Marg and Tony and Janet and John for being rally masters.

At time of writing this we are still looking for a rally master for May. There must be someone who can take it on please.

Personal note: Our W.A. travels continue to throw a few wobblies at us, all in the name of adventure, or in the latest case in the name of ‘Seroja’. We had only just left Kalbarri (due to the ‘fully booked’ sign at all caravan parks) when we heard about a cyclone heading to the W.A. coast. Where to next we thought, as it was reported that maybe it would come in near Exmouth. We stayed at Denham for a few days to see exactly what was happening. The cyclone map was showing it more near Kalbarri and Denham so we headed to Carnarvon. This was definitely the right decision. We only had gusts to about 80kmh and some rain for a few hours through the day before Seroja did its damage in Kalbarri, which was so sad to see. We stayed on for a few extra days and then headed to Coral Bay. There was no way we could have stayed there in the school holidays but with the cyclone uncertainty quite a few had left and we were a couple of the fortunate ones to take their places. 35 degrees there with beautiful blue water perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Onto Exmouth and out to Cape Range NP for more of the same - 5 glorious days at Kurrajong campsite. To be able to walk just a few paces to the beach from your campsite, snorkel a few metres out and see colourful coral and amazing fish of all sizes and colour and also swim to your hearts content – how lucky were we.

Cheers Glenda and Steve

Boonah Rally Report

Tony and Marg arrived Tuesday with a few eager beavers arriving on Wednesday including co-rally masters John and Janet with Kobi taking pride of place in their beautiful brand-new motorhome, where impressed members booked in for a tour of said van next day. Everyone set to, working out the logistics of getting power leads and water hoses to reach, but with multi connections and ingenuity, success prevailed. It was good to see such enthusiastic early arrivals, and others with conflicting commitments came and went throughout the week. We based ourselves at Boonah Showgrounds which is ideally situated a five-minute walk to the centre of the Main Street, and were well supported by our lovely caretakers Deborah and Larry, who could not have been more helpful. Our days were warm but nights turned very cold, so our Happy hours were able to be held out of the cold with exclusive use of a very comfortable hall/ activities centre which included table tennis and darts equipment, where many club members rolled back the years and took up the challenge to compete against each other, often with great hilarity, David Attrill seemed to be at the centre of it all, with infectious enthusiasm and competitiveness coming to the fore. Joyce and Alice played the match of the rally at table tennis, which for some reason had the onlookers in stitches with laughter, which was a huge distraction for the players of the serious game of darts happening at the time. Thursday saw another two vans arrive and fourteen of us enjoyed our Happy Hour followed by a sausage sizzle using the beautiful BBQ in the camp kitchen attached to the hall. Many thanks to all our helpers, it was very much appreciated.

Friday started with our 7.30 am walk (too cold to go earlier), which we managed to accomplish every day ably led by Ian with a few different routes taken most days, either taking in the beautiful scenic track via the Dugenden pub or around the streets of Boonah, admiring the beautiful Queenslander homes. Friday turned out to be ideal for morning tea at Lake Moogerah, where we all revelled in the picturesque scenery and the beautiful reflections in the water. A little walk out on the dam wall was taken before we left for lunch at the Scenic Rim Brewery at nearby Mt Alford. The brewery was a great hit with everyone, from its quaint appearance to the food and beverages on offer, where a few members took advantage to replenish a few stocks on their way out. Upon leaving the brewery a decision by Tony to look for “Minto Crag “meant an excursion where one may have lost his bearings, but after a little consultation with fellow members and a bit of gps searching we found the loop road and Lo and behold there was “Minto Crag “on our right to be viewed and photographed by Marg, but by this time most members had lost interest and after a cursory glance headed for home, where we had gained two furthers vans by afternoon’s end bringing our tally to 8 vans and one motorhome.

Saturday a very handy Garage Sale was held at the Men’s Shed within the Showgrounds, where Noel bought some beautiful large lemons and Barb found herself a possum house. Most of us progressed to the fantastic markets held in nearby Springleigh Park, where some lovely produce was purchased, with our members cleaning out the Beetroot relish that had been sampled at the brewery at one stall. These markets truly had a little and often a lot of everything and was very well displayed. Saturday afternoon saw us gain another van and our tally was up to 10. Sunday was Anzac Day and we all assembled at the Boonah War Memorial to watch club member Ian Walton march. Even though only a very small contingent was allowed to march, it was just as significant as any of the larger ones. The 11am service was kept to approx. 35 mins due to covid concerns, but it was a lovely service with great respect shown to the fallen. It was extremely hot in the sun for those seated within the fence around the memorial, but we were fortunate to be able to observe the service in the shade in the grounds adjacent to the memorial. A flyover of four vintage planes which then circled to come back was a fitting finish to the service. Sunday afternoon saw disc bowls take place behind Kev and Sue’s van, where spectators took refuge in the shade of the van and also David and Kerrie’s awning. We had Deborah the caretaker come down to take some photos as she had never seen the game played, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the banter

and competition take place. Ultimate winners of some very close games were Kerrie Torr and Graeme Briggs with Bev Attrill and Noel Gilvarry runners up. Our final van arrived in the middle of the game, so our final tally was 10 vans and 1 Motorhome.

Monday, we farewelled Peter and Wendy as they were heading off on another trip. It was meant to be a free day but because the late arrivals hadn’t gotten to do a trip another was offered to those interested. Ian and Barb had organised a day of bird watching at Wyaralong Dam, so the remainder of our group had a morning tea at Lake Maroon, which once again had beautiful mountains in the background. We then journeyed onto Rathdowney through some lovely rural countryside, where some members had lunch and others returned to Boonah, while twelve continued onto Beaudesert for a lovely lunch at the RSL. Tony, Marg, John, and Janet called into Wyaralong Dam on the way back to Boonah and viewed not only the amazing dam, but the unique sculptures dotted around a mound overlooking the camping area. John and Janet ran a quick trivia game at Happy Hour. Subject was on Australia and the winners were a team called Three naughty mature men and one lady, also known as Maggie, Ian, Graeme Briggs, and Graeme Knight

Tuesday, we farewelled Ian and Barb, which left us with eighteen members attending a tour of the Templin Historical Village only about 10 mins from Boonah. They especially opened for us, as it’s usually their maintenance day, which was a bonus as it meant we had a lot of volunteers on hand to answer any questions. This turned out to be a fabulous little village where many took a step back in time, where the words of I remember that, were echoed time and again. We lost Tony very early to the working telephone exchange where the volunteers wanted his phone technician wisdom and advice in solving a few problems. Marg relived her days as a PMG switchie, Bev recalled all the dairy related items, with a few others also telling tales of separating the milk and making butter. We even got to see a resident possum walking across the rafters in the Blacksmiths (where was Barb with her possum house?) The very dedicated volunteers were great showing off their Blacksmith skills along with fixing Coach wheels, building and fixing items, and even had a talented lady displaying her weaving skills. The ladies especially appreciated the fashion house and the buildings displaying the beautiful bridal gowns, hats, and other fascinating paraphernalia. The village displays are outstanding which would explain why they have won awards.

Wednesday was a free day where everyone dispersed to various activities of shopping, exploring, or kicking back with a good book, before packing up. Our final activity was Dinner at Simons Tavern in the Main Street, so a few drove and the rest of us walked the short distance where we once again had lovely meals and great company. A huge thank you to all who attended, you were all so kind and understanding to any blunders we may have made, we will improve with age maybe. Hope there aren’t too many sports injuries from the darts and table tennis. Marg, Tony Janet, and John.
