ABBA's Spanish Recordings on CD And Gracias por la música Deluxe Edition – ABBA’s Spanish recordings on CD and DVD The celebrations of ABBA’s 40th Anniversary year of 2014 continue with the latest release in the acclaimed ABBA Deluxe Edition series. In April of this year, Waterloo Deluxe Edition was released, attracting 4-star reviews in the music press, and in November, ABBA’s Spanish-language 1980 album Gracias por la música will receive the Deluxe Edition treatment. The original album has been expanded with 5 bonus tracks, plus a 40-minute DVD featuring vintage promo clips and previously unreleased television material. Gracias por la música Deluxe Edition will be released November 10, 2014. ABBA’s Spanish adventure began in 1979, when it was suggested that the group should record a Spanish-language version of their latest hit single, ‘Chiquitita’. This was in order to facilitate a breakthrough in Latin America, where ABBA hadn’t yet achieved success on the level of the Abbamania that gripped the rest of the world. The results of this single release were astounding: ‘Chiquitita’ rushed to the top of the charts all over Latin America, and became the biggest hit in 25 years in this part of the world. In 1980, an entire album of Spanish-language ABBA songs was recorded. Appropriately entitled Gracias por la música (“Thank You For The Music”), this also became a huge hit – even entering the charts in the not-very-Spanish-speaking Japan! Since then, ABBA have been consistently popular in Latin America. The first disc in the 2-disc Deluxe Edition of Gracias por la música is a CD, which features the original album plus five bonus tracks. The bonus selections are the remaining Spanish tracks recorded by ABBA, four of which were originally included on the albums Super Trouper and The Visitors in Spanish-language territories. The DVD features the five official promo clips ABBA did for ‘Estoy soñando’ (“I Have A Dream”), ‘Conociéndome, conociéndote’ (“Knowing Me, Knowing You”), ‘Gracias por la música’ (“Thank You For The Music”), ‘Felicidad’ (“Happy New Year”) and ‘No hay a quien culpar’ (“When All Is Said And Done”). Additionally, there are three previously unreleased TV items: two performances of ‘Chiquitita’ from 1979, plus a 1980 interview with the group made for Spanish TV, which also features a unique – in every sense of the word – performance of ‘¡Dame! ¡Dame! ¡Dame!’ (“Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! [A Man After Midnight]”). The package also includes a 20-page illustrated booklet featuring a personal greeting from Frida, as well as an essay on the making of the album. The essay includes brand new insights from Buddy & Mary McCluskey, who instigated the Spanish- language recordings and wrote the Spanish lyrics for ABBA, and Ana Martinez del Valle, who coached Agnetha and Frida in the studio. In the booklet, Frida’s greeting and the essay are featured in both Spanish and English. Don’t miss out on this unique celebration of an often overlooked part of ABBA’s glorious career! • Vanguard Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1953 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963, and Various Other Sources
Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers. The Weavers were so successful that Vanguard moved more and more into the popular field. Folk music became the main focus of the label and the home of Joan Baez, Ian and Sylvia, Rooftop Singers, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and many others. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a folk festival was held each year in Newport Rhode Island and Vanguard recorded and issued albums from the those events.

  • Beethoven 'Was' the Pop Writer for the Classical Era. ABBA Were Influenced by This
FAMOUS ABBA FANS TALK: SUZI QUATRO QUOTE: “Beethoven 'was' the pop writer for the classical era. ABBA were influenced by this. It’s in every song they ever wrote.” Undoutably, Suzi Quatro broke down the barriers for many female rock stars with her tough leather-clad look and catchy pop/rock tunes during the glam rock years of the early 70s. A big ABBA fan herself, Suzi enthusiastically accepted the offer to join our Famous ABBA Fans Gallery. With her fantastic cover of Does Your Mother Know that she recently recorded, she certainly deserves her place in the ABBA annals. I met Suzi at the Stag Studios in Essex (“It's a nice little studio. On my new box set there is the track Desperado with Jeff Beck, and I recorded the piano and the vocals here”), where she rehearsed for her upcoming BBC radio show in celebration of her 50 years in the music business. At what time did ABBA enter your life and did you become a fan? I worked with ABBA way back when Ring Ring was a single. We did a TV show together in Belgium and lots of TV after that. We ran into each other quite a bit. Their style wasn't exactly finalised yet. I didn't actually become a fan until Waterloo. I thought they were fab and turned the Eurovision Song Contest on its head. What are your memories of meeting the ABBA members? Nice people - very normal. In your opinion what is the greatest merit of ABBA's music? The simplicity.

  • BOBBY CHARLES LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
BOBBY CHARLES LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Bobby Charles was born Robert Charles Guidry on 21st February 1938 in Abbeville, Louisiana. A native Cajun himself, he recalled that his life “changed for ever” when he re-tuned his parents’ radio set from a local Cajun station to one playing records by Fats Domino. Most successful as a songwriter, he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of swamp pop. His own vocal style was laidback and drawling. His biggest successes were songs other artists covered, such as ‘See You Later Alligator’ by Bill Haley & His Comets; ‘Walking To New Orleans’ by Fats Domino – with whom he recorded a duet of the same song in the 1990s – and ‘(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do’ by Clarence “Frogman” Henry. It allowed him to live off the songwriting royalties for the rest of his life! Two other well-known compositions are ‘The Jealous Kind’, recorded by Joe Cocker, and ‘Tennessee Blues’ which Kris Kristofferson committed to record. Disenchanted with the music business, Bobby disappeared from the music scene in the mid-1960s but returned in 1972 with a self-titled album on the Bearsville label on which he was accompanied by Rick Danko and several other members of the Band and Dr John. Bobby later made a rare live appearance as a guest singer on stage at The Last Waltz, the 1976 farewell concert of the Band, although his contribution was cut from Martin Scorsese’s film of the event. Bobby Charles returned to the studio in later years, recording a European-only album called Clean Water in 1987.

  • Sample Page of the Albums Book – Chronicle
AUSTRALIAN CHART BOOK: THE ALBUMS (1952-2018) CHRONICLE 1976: At the beginning of the year Abba had the No. 1 album, with “Abba”. At the end of the year Abba had the No. 1 album, with “Arrival”. In the middle of the year Abba had the No. 1 album, with “The Best Of Abba”. All together 29 of the year’s 52 weekly charts were led by Abba. During the year “The Best Of Abba” became the first album ever to sell one million copies in Australia. When “Arrival” was released in November, the album’s debut chart position was No. 1. A rare event in the 1970s, but a common place one in the 21st century. In between all this domination, the other 23 chart tops were shared by Bob Dylan, Queen, Sherbet, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and Bryan Ferry. The only album to miss the top because of Abba was “Wings At The Speed Of Sound”, which held onto No. 2 for eight weeks in May-June-July. Queen’s fourth album was their third to chart in Australia. It was “A Night At The Opera”, which claimed the top spot a week before the single “Bohemian Rhapsody” did so. This was Queen’s only No. 1 album (until 2019). Sherbet’s second No. 1 album was “Howzat”, which was also the band’s second No. 1 single. All told, the band had nine top 20 albums, and lead singer Daryl Braithwaite scored three. As the disco movement continued to grow, some new names made their appearances: Donna Summer, with “Love To Love You Baby” and “A Love Trilogy”; Penny McLean, with “Lady Bump”; and Tina Charles, “I Love To Love”.

  • Writing Songs and Writing a Record: Inside the Composition of an Acoustic Pop Album
Writing Songs and Writing a Record: Inside the Composition of an Acoustic Pop Album. By Greg Arnold BA (Hons.) MEd. Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music) University of Tasmania November, 2013 DECLARATION This exegesis contains no material which has been accepted for a degree or diploma by the University or any other institution, except by way of background information and duly acknowledged in the exegesis, and to the best of my knowledge and belief no material previously published or written by another person except where due acknowledgment is made in the text of the exegesis. This exegesis may be made available for loan and limited copying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968 Signed: Greg Arnold Date: November 13, 2013 ABSTRACT This project is a study of the author’s creative practice as a songwriter, record producer and performer of mostly (but not exclusively) acoustic pop music. This project has been pursued though performance and composition and is documented in the folio of recordings and the accompanying exegesis. The folio of this submission is weighted at eighty per cent and the exegesis at twenty per cent. It involves the creation of a new studio album by The Swamp Dandies. For this album the author has been songwriter, vocalist, instrumentalist, arranger, engineer and producer. In recognition of the interdependence of component stages, the exegesis provides an analytical narrative account of the entire compositional journey of the album from pre-tracking songwriting through to mastering. Utilising reflective journals and participant interviews undertaken throughout the process it documents and analyses the deliberate and “intuitive” creative methods involved in all of these tasks.

  • There's No Need to Introduce the ABBA Group to Anybody – Two
There’s no need to introduce the ABBA group to anybody – two extremely talented composers and two perfectly complementing female singers, the eight studio albums and innumerable amount of compilations, over 130 released songs, more than 20 worldwide hits among them, eight consecutive albums on top of British charts (compilations counted) and the Eurovision Song Contest victory in 1974 with the song Waterloo. And of course much more triumphs after disbanding – a mulitiplatinum Gold compilation (1992) and still amazingly popular Mamma Mia! musical (1999). This is only the short description of the band, penned for those, who don’t want to carefully check the ABBA story. But what to do, if we need to tell to someone much more about the band? Or if we simply want to join to the group of the ABBA fans? The Polish publishing market has not coddled ABBA fans so far with an excessive amount of publications devoted to the band. Suffice it to say that in addition to the book published in 1999, The Winner Takes It All (from Marzena Tarka and Jan Skaradzinski, the In Rock publishing house) and short, few-words articles in encyclopedias, dictionaries or in the press, there was nothing at all. This lasted until 2013, when the Poznań publishing house Rebis undertook to publish two completely new books about the band, due to the upcoming 40th anniversary of ABBA's victory in the Eurovi- sion Song Contest. One of them is the The History of the Supergroup by Carl Magnus Palm, which is a translation of the ABBA biography, originally published in September 2008, titled ABBA.
