Nancy Sithari, an contributing towards regenerating the inner city. Engineering Consultant at the Tshwane Energy and Electricity Division, is one of six South African women chosen to study renewable energy at Bavaria in Germany from 6 August to 29 October 2011. For more information on the seminar, please call Leah Poto on 012 358 8133. The scholarship was open to students who hold a degree and are interested in research on renewable energy, solar water heating and waste management. The invitation could not have come at a better time, as South Africa is celebrating Women's Month and honouring the great achievements of its women.

Sithari is enrolled for an M Tech Programme at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The programme has a substantial research component related to renewable energy.

“Germany is a leader in renewable energy but South Africa as a whole is far behind. Hence I am honoured to be part of the delegation to visit Germany to acquire skills that will help the City of Tshwane to develop sustainable models of recycling,” she said.

Sithari anticipates that the trip will also give her an opportunity to visit leading renewable organisations, and exposure to recycling and other energy-related solutions.

It is no wonder that the 30-year-old was chosen to represent the City. A tremendous hard worker, she has taken great strides in her studies and career. Sithari holds a B Tech Degree and a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from TUT. She also holds a number of other certificates.

Sithari was the first female project manager on the solar water heater project that benefited 270 houses in Winterveld. For this projects she was awarded the 2009 Woman in Water Engineering National Award by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. The project was recognised as one of the most outstanding local environmental conservation initiatives and job creation efforts in the fight against poverty. Sithari received a certificate and bagged R20 000 from the department.

Sithari acknowledges that she could not have made it without the support of her two mentors. “The Director: Energy and Electricity Development, Kagiso Leepile, and Prof Dintchev of TUT deserve a special thanks for believing in me and giving me a real opportunity to shine," she said.

She also expressed her gratitude to Energy and Electricity management for making this trip Nancy Sithari possible. Photo by Lebogang Matji 5 TSHWANE UPDATE 15-26 August 2011 News MEDICAL WASTE IS A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD Andile Tshona
