Also present: Councillors E J Godwin and D Morson as non-voting substitutes. Officers in attendance: J Mitchell (Chief Executive), L Bunting (Democratic Services Officer) and P Snow (Democratic and Electoral Services Manager). EWG1 APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN It was proposed that Councillor Chambers be appointed Chairman for the ensuing year. This was agreed. EWG2 APOLOGIES AND DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Apologies for absence were received from Councillor A Dean, J Freeman, M Lemon and J Rose. There were no declarations of interest. EWG3 MINUTES The Minutes of the meeting held on 12 December 2012 were agreed as a correct record and signed by the Chairman. There was no business arising. EWG4 FURTHER ELECTORAL REVIEW (FER) The Democratic and Electoral Services Manager reported that the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) had published draft recommendations in April 2013 for the future electoral arrangements in the Uttlesford District. The consultation period would close on 8 July 2013. The Council meeting in July had been rescheduled to 1 July to allow time for any comments the Council wished to make and agree to any response to the LGBCE recommendations. The Democratic and Electoral Services Manager then went on to outline the differences between the published recommendations and the Council’s proposals. Chesterford and Elmdon The proposed separate single member wards of Chesterford and Littlebury and Elmdon and Wenden had been merged into a proposed two member ward to be named as Chesterford and Elmdon.

Photographs ©Jacqueline Cooper. Clavering Castle, which lies next to the Parish Church, is a large moated site designated by English Heritage as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, of Saxon or medieval origin. This article describes what remains today, and draws together what little is already known and what is surmised about its history. The castle complex consists of a rectangular enclosure, 150 by 100 metres in size, surrounded by a large ditch, 26 metres across and 5 metres deep, and associated earthworks including a possible watermill site. The central platform, which is on private land, is deep in tree cover and lies within a bend of the River Stort, but parts of it can be glimpsed from the churchyard, from a public footpath and more distantly from the highway up Plantation Hill.

    Saffron Walden and Villages Team Ministry Profile 2020 i September 2020 Thank you for taking the time to look at our Team Profile. We completed this in early March 2020 just before COVID-19 changed all our lives. We hope you will enjoy finding out more about our vibrant town and village ministries. During lockdown we have taken to Zoom and the telephone to keep in touch with each other and to continue to worship God together. You will find lots of information about our Church at Home and our online services on www.stmaryssaffronwalden.org and our village websites (which can be reached from the relevant pages of the profile). We have established a Pastoral Support team to help the vulnerable and isolating members of our congregation with shopping, collection of prescriptions and providing a listening ear. Many of our members have signed up to help as an NHS Volunteer, at the local foodbanks and with local support initiatives. We started reopening our churches in July in accordance with the current guidelines and are now holding a limited number of services in all the churches in the team. Many of our services are livestreamed and we are continuing to provide ministry online as well as face to face. We pray that as you discover more about us that you will feel God’s prompting.
