  • Green Recovery Call to Action & Signatories 121
GREENRECOVERY REBOOT & REBOOST our economies for a sustainable future Call for mobilisation The coronavirus crisis is shaking the whole world, with devastating consequences across Europe. We are being put to the test. We are suffering and mourning our losses, and this crisis is testing the limits of our system. It is also a test of our great European solidarity and of our institutions, which acted fast at the start of the crisis to deploy measures to protect us. The crisis is still ongoing, but we will see the light at the end of the tunnel, and by fighting together, we will beat the virus. Never have we faced such a challenging situation in peacetime. The fight against the pandemic is our top priority and everything that is needed to stop it and eradicate the virus must be done. We welcome and strongly support all the actions developed by governments, EU institutions, local authorities, scientists, medical staff, volunteers, citizens and economic actors. In this tremendously difficult situation, we are also facing another crisis: a shock to our economy tougher than the 2008 crisis. The major shock to the economy and workers created by the pandemic calls for a strong coordinated economic response. We therefore welcome the declaration of European leaders stating that they will do “whatever it takes” to tackle the social and economic consequences of this crisis. However, what worked for the 2008 financial crisis may not be sufficient to overcome this one. The economic recovery will only come with massive investments to protect and create jobs and to support all the companies, regions and sectors that have suffered from the economy coming to a sudden halt.

  • Question for Written Answer
Question for written answer E-007070/2020 to the Commission Rule 138 Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew), Sandro Gozi (Renew), Laurence Farreng (Renew), Dominique Riquet (Renew), Fabienne Keller (Renew), Chrysoula Zacharopoulou (Renew), Christophe Grudler (Renew) Subject: Current state of play as regards State aid in the European railway sector The railway sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis and needs support to overcome this period. However, as underlined in the Annual Report on Competition Policy and confirmed by the Temporary Framework, State aid should only be granted to cover the losses incurred due to COVID- 19 and must not be used to reinforce a company’s dominant position in a given sector. The Commission is currently reviewing the multibillion-euro State aid package that will benefit the entire Deutsche Bahn Group. As Deutsche Bahn is an integrated company, State aid could be used both in the market for rail passenger transport, where Deutsche Bahn is dominant, and in the market for distribution of rail tickets, where Deutsche Bahn is being investigated for anti-competitive practices. Following the 4th Railway Package and the Green Deal, the Commission has committed to making EU railways more attractive, innovative and competitive. 1. How will the Commission address the issue of State aid that might go beyond Deutsche Bahn’s needs and be used for new acquisitions and investments for its own in-house services to the detriment of its competitors? 2. Will the Commission consider setting conditions to grant State aid only to Deutsche Bahn’s rail infrastructure services to make sure that it does not harm competition as regards the distribution of rail tickets? • EU-US Future Forum 2021: a Path Forward for Transatlantic Relations
Atlantic Council EUROPE CENTER ISSUE BRIEF EU-US Future Forum 2021: A path forward for transatlantic relations AUGUST 2021 BENJAMIN HADDAD, JÖRN FLECK, LIVIA GODAERT, MICHAELA NAKAYAMA SHAPIRO INTRODUCTION This report is written a few days after US President Joe Biden’s first interna- tional trip, to Europe, where he notably attended the first EU-US Summit in seven years. The summit led to concrete realizations, including the creation of a Trade and Tech Council and a suspension of the Airbus-Boeing dispute. But just as importantly, it spurred new momentum to shape an ambitious transat- lantic agenda to face common challenges: an assertive China, the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for subsequent economic recovery, climate change, technological change, and growing authoritarianism. Beyond the positive de- velopments coming out of the summit, the real test lies ahead: can we forge the policies, norms, and standards that will once again make the transatlantic relationship a force for the defense of liberal democracy across the world? Engaging in constant dialogue between policy makers, experts, and the pri- vate sector will be critical to the success of this endeavor. The Europe Center conducts From May 5 to 7, the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center and the EU Delegation research and uses real-time to the United States partnered to organize the first EU-US Future Forum commentary and analysis to (EUFF), a three-day open conference bringing together policy makers, ex- guide the actions and strategy of perts, and the private sector to address the key challenges facing the transat- key transatlantic decisionmakers lantic relationship in the coming decades.

  • Ms Ursula Von Der Leyen, President of the European Commission European Commission Rue De La Loi/Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels
Ms Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission European Commission Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels Mr Charles Michel, President of the European Council European Commission Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 175 1049 Brussels Brussels, 27 July 2020 Dear President von der Leyen, Dear President Michel, With this letter, we would like to draw your attention to the Polish government’s expressed intent to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention on fighting domestic violence. This latest development shows that we can never take women’s rights for granted. This is disrespectful, a clear violation of women’s rights and unacceptable. The signal the Polish government is sending is a highly troubling one in times that are already challenging for women. Women have been hit disproportionally hard by the Covid-19 crisis and face an increase in cases of domestic violence. The European Union is founded upon shared values that are enshrined in our Treaties, amongst them equality between men and women. We cannot regress on these core values stipulated in Article 2 TEU. We should never accept it when one of our Member States backtracks from equality. That is why we call on you, as the President of the European Commission, guardian of the treaties, and as the President of the European Council, to do everything within your power to discourage the Polish government from taking this misstep. Madam President, in your political guidelines, you made the commitment that the EU’s accession to the Istanbul Convention is a key priority for the Commission and that if the accession remains blocked in the Council, you would consider tabling proposals on minimum standards regarding the definition of certain types of violence, and strengthening the Victims’ Rights Directive.

  • Statement: Call on Ursula Von Der Leyen to Strongly Support and Defend Gender Equality and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
Strasbourg, 16 July 2019 Statement: Call on Ursula von der Leyen to strongly support and defend Gender Equality and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) As Members of the European Parliament and representatives of MEPs for Sexual and Reproductive Rights and the pro-choice network ALL of US we call on the newly elected President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to protect and further strengthen gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights in the work programme for the European Commission 2019-2024. The principle that men and women should receive equal pay for equal work has been enshrined in the European Treaties since 1957. Today, inside the EU, its institutions work on promoting equal economic independence for women and men, closing the gender pay gap, advancing gender balance in decision-making and ending gender-based violence. Gender equality is enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and the EU is further promoting gender equality outside of its borders. Attacks on women’s rights and gender equality are attacks on fundamental rights and values, including democracy and the rule of law. Conversely, everybody benefits from the positive effects of gender equality policies – socially, politically and economically. The value of gender equality is also close to the hearts of European citizens – according to a 2017 Eurobarometer survey, 91% of Europeans believe that promoting it is important to ensuring a fair and democratic society. Around the world, every day about 830 women die from pregnancy or childbirth related com- plications; 214 million women want to prevent or postpone pregnancy, but do not have access to modern methods of contraception; around 25 million unsafe abortions are estimated to take place every year; more than 200 million girls and women have been forced to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM); four in ten women aged 20-24 in Sub-Saharan Africa were married before the age of 18; one in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence.
